View Full Version : Ignition locks prevent drunk driving

http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/04/06/ignition.locks.ap/index.html

Basically a convicted drunk driver has to blow into a machine which tests his BAC. If its within safe limits, the device will alow the car to start. If not, the ignition remains locked.

If it was me, I'd have the machine notify the police if the driver fails to pass the test. He might be tempted to use another car without the device.

I think this is a FANTASTIC idea...it should be on every car driven by licensed drivers under the age of 25 as well and force all dealerships to do a DWI background check and install the device immediately for all new car purchases. Whoever thought this one up should be rewarded with a medal...talk about using technology to solve a serious problem.

Drunk drivers are the worst. My dad's dog was mowed down by a drunk driver. His name was Lucky. He wasn't.

They've been using a system like this in Louisiana for a few years.

I don;t see how you can;t just have somebody blow into it for you.

I agree with both jeff and Jim. This is a great idea, but what prevents you from having someone else blow into it.

I also always thought that if you got convicted of a DWI, for a period of like 3 years you should not be allowed to drink ANY alchohol and drive. Hold them to the standard of a non-21 year old driver.

I also think that they should develop soem kind of test roadside for drugs. A lot of people I know do not drink, but then do other drugs and drive

I guess they assume people who drive drunk usually do it alone...its not like you're thinking all deviously when you're sloshed and get behind the wheel...

I knew a guy in NC who had a car like that about 12 years ago. It worked pretty well. Somone else could blow into it, but if you have someone else to blow into it, they can also go ahead and drive it for you, too.

While they're at it, they should make this thing detect and alert the driver of bad breath.

I would imagine drunk driving is more an unplanned thing than something you set out to do on a Friday night, balloon in hand. Of course you can break the system. It's not meant to be ironclad. It's meant to protect us from those who had one too many and don't realize it until they have to blow into the meter.

Speaking of which Ed, have you ever tried to undo the knot of a balloon while sloshed enough to register as criminally drunk?
I wonder how reliable the sensors really are though.

I mean the real machines the use, most are Intoxilizer 5000 ( well at least back in 1997 that was the model ), are like $ 5000 because of all the technology in them

I would assume that these on the ignitions are more like the handheld breathalyzers that cops can only use as a gauge of how drunk a person is.

You cant ever be convicted of what the handhelds say because they arent admissable.

They can only be used much like the standarized field sobriety tests.

Speaking of which Ed, have you ever tried to undo the knot of a balloon while sloshed enough to register as criminally drunk?

you can just use a clothes pin to keep it closed. and u dont really need to plan on drunk driving but just keep it in the car fer when u need it.

My point is, if you can remeber you even have the balloon, open the knot (or pin) and use it on the breathalyzer, you're not drunk enough.

How coordinated are you when you're plastered, you know?

It made my heart sing.

If you're really plastered, I bet the fumes from your breath and a match could start a Mack Truck.
Can placebos cause side effects? And if so, are the side effects real?

every little bit helps. it will definitely help with the more sensible people who 'as most' occassional drinkers do feel they could still drive when they're 'slightly' over the limit... it's also got to take alot of support and tough love from family and friends. the one's that have to drink will be looking to borrow vehicles from them and they have to say NO

on the other hand though "do alcohol companies REALLY want you to drink responsibly' and in reality that means just 2 or so beers before your over the limit. any drinking establishment in this country and the world for that matter really don't care about your 'blood alcohol level' and whether you've just exceeded it

I don't see having to blow into your dashboard in order to get your car to start being implemented anytime soon. It's just not practical at this point.

This is the stupidest thing I've ever heard of. I need another electronic system on my car to go wrong. Because I'm sure it's gonna work all the time and never leave me stranded somewhere because it's saying I have a BAC too high drive and I was just at the library or picking up an Italian sub at the deli.

Plus, this would make a market spring up in front of bars. People charge 10 to 20 bucks to blow in the thing for you and you go. What the fuck do they care if you die? It's just about money.

Lastly, I very much dislike the "Big Brother Is Watching" feeling this gives me. Even worse than the traffic light cameras.

If they can compel you to bring your car somewhere and have this device installed, then why cant they compel you to not drive at all? How does this prevent you from driving another car not so equipped?
Im not saying that its a bad idea or not a noble gesture, Im just saying that I dont know how effective it will be. For example, lets say you were arrested for drunk driving, and you spend a few days in jail, get your license suspended for a while and are told not to drive, and you live at home with your parents and brothers and sisters. Lets say you had a car and they have cars, and your car was impounded because of the DWI or they forced you to have to have this device installed on that car so as to prevent you from driving drunk again. Are they also going to make everyone else in your household also equip their cars as well to prevent the possibility that you take one of their cars? Say you stagger drunk out of your house and try to get your own car going and you blow into the device and it wont let the car start. Thats good. But lets say you then go back into the house and find the keys to one of the other cars in the driveway and off you go.

I think its a dumb idea. God forbid you have a LIFE, go to a party

hurt, no accident. Now you have to have this shit in your car for the
