<p><em>WEST BEND, Wis. - Larry Hoffman brought home a
bargain shirt from the Goodwill store - only to find $2,000 in cash
stuffed in a pocket.</em></p>
<p><em>The 69-year-old retiree returned to the store the same day to report the money.</em></p>
<p><em>"The
money certainly wasn't mine. It belonged to somebody else, obviously,"
Hoffman said of his April 1 find. "That person was certainly on my mind
more than me."</em></p>
<p><em>Store manager Rebecca Johnson said customers
have returned small amounts of money found in clothing, "but nothing on
this scale" in the six years she's been in charge.</em></p>
<p><em>"If
there's a one-tenth of 1 percent chance that somebody's going to claim
it, they should have that opportunity," Hoffman said Wednesday.</em></p>
<p><em>Goodwill
has no way to trace the source of the shirt, so Johnson called West
Bend police. The rightful owner has 90 days to claim the money. After
that, Hoffman can claim it or else it goes in the city treasury.</em></p>
<p><em>Police
won't disclose any details about the shirt or the denominations of the
bills that were found. That information has to come from anyone seeking
to claim the money.</em></p>
<p><em>"When we were kids, it was always
'finders keepers, losers weepers,'" Hoffman said. "But that's not
really the case. You've got to keep the losers from weeping too much."</em></p>
<p> </p>
<p>I would like to think that I would, but I doubt that I would. Would you?? </p>

I'd return it. If I didn't, I'd have horrible Catholic guilt to contend with the rest of my life. No thanks.
Besides, the guy gets the benefit of being honest, being touted in his community and in the press as a "hero" (which is ridiculous because what he did should be the norm, not the exception), AND probably getting to keep the money in the end. What could be better than that?

If I had bought this from someone, and I knew the money was theirs I would def. return it. Since this is from goodwill, and I know there is not really much of a chance of the owner getting the money back, then I doubt I would have returned it. Its going to be wasted. If he felt that bad, i would say he should have donated it

If there's an ID with the money or if I'm sure of whose money it is, then I return it. Otherwise, it's finders keepers.

figure, you buy the shirt, you buy it and whatever's in it. If
the person donating the shirt and Goodwill didn't check the shirt, then
it's their loss. </p>

If he felt that bad, he should've donated it to Good Will. How do you even claim that $2000 was yours?

I think I'd keep it just out of laziness of having to go back to the store and fill out forms and shit (yes i seriously can be that lazy and that is probably the biggest reason). I would start giving money to homeless people much more often though. Probably not $2,000 worth, but maybe a dollar instead of a quarter or some shit like that.

Fuck that! It was probably some old person that forgot they put the dough in that shirt pocket! They deserve it back. If they can describe the shirt they left it in and when they dropped it off that should be proof enough. If other assholes are trying to claim it with no proof fuck them!

The shirt probably belonged to an old guy who didn't trust banks. My grandfather was like that (kept his cash hidden around the house). He probably died, and his clothes were donated. I'd keep half of it, and donate the other half.

<p>Most of the clothes that go to these goodwill or second hand stores are clothes that were in someones estate or were dumped into a goodwill box. I doubt they would "really" find out who's money it ever was and somoen will end up keeping it. The guy that bought the shirt; if he is buying clothing in a second hand store, wouldnt you assume that he is a little short of cash to buy used clothing? I have shopped in second hand stores for non-garments, but I would feel funny buying clothes because I figure someone died in them or whatever. </p><p>My wife was in a Costco type store with my sister in law last year and she sees this envelope laying in the isle and she picks it up and looks inside...$3000 in cash, no name, nothing. She kept it. Id probably keep it too. BUT, if as I was walking around in the store afterward and heard an announcement that someone lost an envelope, I would def. have returned it.</p><p>If I found money laying in the street, Im keeping it. But if I found a pocketbook or a wallet with a name in it, I would certainly look into finding the owner.<br />I think in the case of finding money in a shirt like that, I would keep it. I would say that the guy who wants to return it is a nice guy for wanting to do the right thing, but I also think he is a bit naive.</p>
