I keep hearing news storys involving these two countries posturing up against each other, demanding apologies and what not.  What gives? Anyone know more about it?  What would be the implications if these two were to fight each other?  Would we have to step in and assist, and who?

Doubt it. There's a history of tensions between the two, but China is
typically not an aggressive Country. And Japan cant do anything without
us (US). And we have our eyes on that ENORMOUS potential Chinese
marketplace. Too much working against it.

China is pissed becuse Japan trys very very hard to ignore and whitewash its actions during WW2, This all has to do with how schoolbooks are created and used to teach in Japan, The right wing in japan has suceeded for decades to basicly remove any critisim of japan and the Emporer from school text books that plus japans major media has gone and done things like call the Najing massacre a hoax and call Korean comfort women liars, Japan has never publicly said it was sorry for how it treated its fellow asian nations during WW2 but has wrote checks in aid to nations like china for decades, China is happy to keep this cureent so called crisis going because it knows that the one thing that Japan truly hates is confrontation and bad world press. This will all be settled by Japan writing a big check and China will shut up for a while until the next time this has all happened before usally with schoolbooks or the prime minister going to some grave site hope this helps

Don't the Chinese remember what happened the last time the Japs got pissed at them? And besides, the Chinese have the worst luck in terms of war...they lose to everybody...the British, the Japanese, the Vietnamese, etc

Sorry, but Tibet's been part of China for a zillion years.Yeah, but it's only been under direct military control in the last 50+.That, and it's pretty brutal and a monstrous human rights violation.

It's China v. Taiwan  and/or North Korea v. Japan that you ought to worry about.Not to mention China v. the US dollar in the currency markets and China v. your car's gas tank in the  oil markets.
