Yes, it's real.

If you go root around in some eelgrass, mud, algae, etc. floating around docks or in shallow marine/estuarine areas you should be able to turn up small versions of them in our area fairly easily (often genus Idotea)

it also looks a little like what we used to call a waterbug, they were gray... you'd lift a rock or stone and they would be chillin below. you pick e'm up and put them in your hand and they would roll up into a ball. it was like they had plates of hard skin or exoskeleton
