yeah it sucks to hear it but come on, janes was always popular but never "mainstream" like all the other gay ass pop radio shit. so good for them for makin some big time commercial cash, i just hope they dont all overdose at once.

ah, i see your point, but i remember the indie channel in my area in like '91 playing the video for mntn song, which was so bad ass for the time.

I don't see it as "selling out".The band is broken up.  Their last record didnt sell and their back catalog isn't exactly moving a lot of copies.  At this point, the song is just a song that someone at an ad agency happened to think was a good fit.  It's not "cashing in" on the success or name recognition of Janes Addiction.  It's merely Janes Addiction allowing somebody to use a song that suited their needs.  Sure they got paid but, that IS the reason these songs were created in the first place...to make money.  It's also the reason why concert tickets are 80 bucks and Tshirts are $45.<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v355/tucker71/fezident.jpg" border="0" /> "I'm looking for the 'Make Believe Ballroom'....Don't get fresh, Buddy!"

does it even matter anymore ...?you have bob dylan (phyically) in a lingerie commercial ... moby licensing every song of 'play' ... hip hop artists marketing every angle, and using multiple outlets (media & merchandise) to propell their fame and fortune ... even aerosmith - the face of 70's sex & drugs rock now appear in camera commercials, their songs sell cars and the even have a amusement park ride ...the paradigm has clearly shifted, and it's now become the norm ...

here's the point- most of the bands i listen to dissolve w/in a yr or 2, but when you take a classic and cash in, credibility in the see-saw.

Oh musicians gotta eat too. Iggy Pop is pedding cruises, Led Zeppelin, cars. But I do admit I cringe whenever a Levi's docker's ad comes on-- Dead Kennedys, Tones on Tails, and, most recently, The The.And I'm not sure, but I could have sworn I heard "The Passenger" on a commercial today. It might have been dockers, but I blocked it out.

Actually, I heard Kaiser Permanente wants to use "Waiting Room" for their next commercial so watch out!

I'm still too pissed about Iggy and Carnival Cruises to even think about JA selling out.

they got We're An American Band in the new movie Saharai also heard I'm Your Captain in some Ed Burns movie where he's protecting his brother from the mob...i wonder if they use them for free?

i guess if i, a 28 yr old male, had creative control over the content of a commercial, but not the final say, i'd try to get something rockin' in it.  especially most consumers grew around the same time as me.

I'm still too pissed about Iggy and Carnival Cruises to even think about JA selling out. To be honest, that actually makes me smile -- the fact that they used a song that I always understood to be about heroin to advertise a hacky cruise line...how can you not laugh?Almost as good is the fact that one of the truck companies was using CCR's "Fortunate Son" as a patriotic song to sell trucks, but conveniently ignoring the "it ain't me" part of the song.

I think whenever you use a song in anything you have to pay, no matter how obscure. I saw the Polish brothers talking about their movie "Jackpot" that had Karoke in it and how they had to pick and choose "cheap" songs since they couldn't afford the pricy, popular ones.
But then I think there are some like the national anthem that are considered public domain. But I'm not sure and my computer is way too slow tonite for me to research. Does anyone else know for sure?

Yeah, they always cut the song off before it gets too the "good" part. Where's the "Beatin' my brain with liquor and drugs" line? Christ, If I were stuck on some hideous cruise that's all I'd be doing...
