I found out today that an apartment in my house ( I am in the basement and this was on the 3rd floor) needed to have an exterminator come because of an infestation of bed bugs!
Has anyone on here had them, or know if they could move from one floor to another? It scares me a little because apparently, when they are biting you, you arent aware of it. Now, I do NOT have any of the symptoms of having them, and I dont know why this is, but every time I read about something like this, it makes my skin crawl! Right now I am awair of every hair on my body! I doubt I will have a good night sleep tonight! Why do I look this stuff up??

Oh man, I had a few ants in my room once that found a candy cane I forgot I had left open, and I was up for most of the night. I killed every last one of them, cleaned the area where the candy was, and then spent most of the night thinking things were crawling on me.

Hope you can get rid of them soon. That, or get really, really drunk and hope you pass out.

Well, I dont have them, but they are in the house I live in (its a 3 family). What I am worried about is if they spayed for them up there and they decide to move in the house and they come down to MY apartment.... I fucking HATE shit like this, or cockroaches or whatever. Thank god I dont have nothing like that. I do get the occasional centepede in here though.

there was a brief article on bed bugs in the New Yorker this week. it just said they are going around, they are difficult to get rid of (sounds like it is so bad in some apartments, people move and sue the landlord), and it is a good time to be a bed bug exterminator.

-I'll log off now, and listen to your

Thanks for the info. I have been looking around and dont really see any cracks or seams that could allow these things into my apartment, but I guess it is possible. Im going to move my bed away from the wall and vaccum like crazy now just to be safe. Maybe apply a little diatom dust. My concern is that if the exterminator that went to the 3rd floor apartment sprayed for them, that the ones that live might be looking for greener pastures. I still have another aprtment between me and where they were, as a buffer. Incidentally, a former occupant of that very same apartment made the news in 1992..See #5

http://www.canongate.net/Lists/Crime/20UnusualStolenObjects
My Thanks to Just Jon, Reefdwella, ADF, Yerdaddy,Monsterone and Katylina for the sig-pic help and creation!Which Witch Wished Which Wicked Wish?

Not good SR. I work with psychiatric facilities in Bergen County and it seems they are having big time trouble with the same thing. It seems that they were all but gone from the area until lately due to immigrants bringing them over due to poor conditions. Unfortunately you don't know you're being bit, but they do leave signs. If you start to develop rashes anywhere on your body, or see bloody droppings you probably have them. If I was you, I'd request/demand that your landlord have the whole building inspected and sprayed. Sometimes things get so bad that people have to burn beds and or furniture. Recently, this facility had to burn one of their homes down bc the problem was so bad. As you might have guessed, I don't visit this facility quite as much anymore. As one can easily pick some up on your clothes or on your bag if you sit or put your bag down. It really is becoming a big problem around here.

** Please Note: This is my first serious post in years.

Get your balls out of your purse and step up to flavor! Spoon, do you think they will eventually infest the rest of the house? So far, it seems to have been isolated to one apartment. Im going to ask the woman who lives above me if she has seen anything and to let me know. What Id really like to know is if they treat where they are, do they then spread to other untreated areas in the house? Is there anything I can do to prevent them from entering my area? Could I have it sprayed? Again, I havent seen anything, or felt anything and unless I was told this happend, I would never have guessed it, but the idea of them possibly coming into my apt. is raising my anxiety.

SR, I couldn't really give you answers to those questions since I'm not an expert, but I would investigate it further. The clinic I speak of sent many of its group home psych patients to a dermatologist with strange rashes which nobody could explain. In fact, it took them about 6 months to figure the whole thing out with the derm docs and the clinic doing all it could to explain the rashes. As far as I know, they spread so quickly and bad that they had to burn down one of the homes near Greystone, and the infected patients are no longer being seen at the clinic in fear of an infestation. However, none of the 100+ workers at the clinic have brought the buggers home as of yet. This doesn't stop me from itching like a madman every time I leave the site, thinking I have them all over me. I just bought a new townhouse so it'll really "bug" me if they spread to my home.

It very unlikely that bed bugs will come down to you. The most common way bed bugs are spread is by close contact. If you are in the elevator with someone with beg bugs and they bump into you, then you could get them. It is a pricey treatment. Most exterminators charge between $600-$800 for a one bedroom apartment. Check your bed frames, seams of mattress, look for rips in the boxspring, picture frames above the bed, back of night table and dresser. Look closely at the chair or couch you spend most your time in. Bed bugs will only be found very near a blood source (i.e. you laying in bed for 8 hours).

At this point someone might say "hope this helps." But not me.
