Honestly, one of the best movies I have ever seen. I was blown away. I
definitly recommend watching the season and then go out and see
Serenity. Amazingly compelling story, brilliant acting, great action
and adventure. All around great movie. It will make you laugh and cry
and the story will keep you on the edge of your seat.

recommend seeing the series first, but the movie was excellent with
some real holy shit moments. Really expanded well on the series,
but no sign of the men with the blue gloves.
The thing I love about Whedon and it's seen in Buffy, Angel, even his
Astonishing X-Men series, is that all his characters are
vulnerable. Not one is safe from something really bad happening
to them. It's very evident in the Serenity movie. You
actually fear for the lives of these characters. All in all I
thought it was a great movie. The girlfriend and I are HUGE
Whedon fans and could not wait to see this film. I was not
dissappointed in the least, neither was she.

I haven't seen the film, but let's see if I can describe it accurately:

Some
fight scenes, the some too cool for the room sass-talk, some more too

fight scenes, some too cool for the room sass-talk, more hot chick

some triumphant too cool for the room sass-talk, and then the credits
roll. Like all the other Whedon garbage.

I've seen three episodes of Buffy and I'm still furious that I can't have those 3 hours back. The movie was pretty amusing, though all of his fans seem to loathe it, so fuck them.

I read the first arc of Astonishing X-Men and it was one of the most pandering, unimaginative, pedantic pieces of bullshit possible, and that's saying something for a fucking X-comic. Thank Christ for the beautiful artwork, otherwise it'd be nothing but a murder of a bunch of trees.

So, yeah, I don't "get" Whedon at all. Pass.

This is a great film. It's a unique vision of our future and it delves
into some serious primal emotions. It's a very deep movie and combines
that with some humor and great action. How much more can you ask for?
If you watch the trailer and plan to rip the film apart without even

it based on previous works of whedon then your not giving it a fair

Yes, the black guy from the movie is obviously based on the black guy
from teh last ep. Basically, instead of drawing the plot out for
several seasons, they shotgunned alot of it into the movie, and are
hoping to have a trilogy.

Mo, I am surprised that you didn't dig on how lived-in their universe was. I thought you would hate it if everything was all glossy, symetrical, and futuristic.

But...I do know what you mean about there being few concepts that we've all seen before. Then again, there was also stuff that was unique to this film.

It's reeeeally hard for a movie to be original nowadays. It's all been done. Every sports movie is EXACTLY the same. Every one of them. Every romantic comedy is identical. Every gangster mob movie is the same. Hell, they're STILL making those f'cking horrible buddy cop movies! It's alllll been done.

There are very few exceptions.

All you can hope for is that the film makers present it in an interesting way. Serenity achieved that.

The whole thing felt like a bigger budget episode of something like Star Trek: The Next Generation or Babylon 5, with some forced "ironic" banter/comedy, so that killed it for me right there. Now I will admit I pretty much hate most "sci-fi" films of the bat...they basically live and die with stuff like Blade Runner for me...but everything I watched in the 45 minutes of this flick felt like something I had seen somewhere else before. Yeah, I know truly original ideas are few and far between, but this smacked of hardcore deja vu in regards to a bunch of crappy syndicated sci-fi shows I had the misfortune of seeing some Saturday afternoon as a kid. And Whedon REALLY bugs me. Like Kevin Smith, he's a writer that I enjoyed very much when they started out, but as time went on they write EVERYTHING and EVERYONE in the same "voice"...nothing ever feels new or interesting for me with writers like that.

The advantage of HD-DVD is that it is cheaper to produce in the short term because equipment producing DVD can be upgraded to produce HD-DVDs while Blu-Ray discs require all-new equipment. This applies to players too, as HD-DVDs are read by the same laser as DVDs, while Blu-Ray uses a blue laser, which would tehn require two different lasers to be backward compatible with DVDs. So initially Blu-Ray players and discs will be more expensive.

Blu-Ray is clearly the more advanced technology, but so was Betamax. It's also important to note that as of now Blu-Ray has more support. Every studio will release on Blu-Ray, while Sony films and MGM films will never be on HD-DVD until Blu-ray is clearly dead. As well, Dell and Apple will exclusively offer Blu-Ray in computers, for now at least, while HP will offer both.

Sony is really banking on PS3 to get this tech inside homes.

This message was edited by fezident on 4-19-06 @ 10:42 PM

A regular DVD upconverted to 1080i is just an image with a 480p resolution being sent to the TV at a 1080i signal. No extra resolution is gained by this. It may look sharper, but it's really just the same image you were looking at on a 480p resolution.

A movie on HD-DVD or Blu-Ray will be on the disc at 1080p (not i, p, p is better) and then converted to whatever your TV will support. HOWEVER, to avoid piracy, you will only be able to wtach HD-DVD movies and Blu-Ray movies through a HDMI connection. Any other connection will be limited to a 480p resolution, negating any point in having these new players. So if you are going to buy one, MAKE ABSOLUTELY SURE YOU HAVE AN HDMI CONNECTION ON YOUR TV OR YOU ARE WASTING YOUR MONEY.

However, another benefit to HD-DVD and Blu-Ray will be that for shows that are only available at standard 480p resolution, you will be able to hold a shit load more content on a single disc. Blu-Ray might even be able to handle a single season of a TV show on a single disc. HD-DVD won't be able to do that with its smaller capacity.

Serenity named top sci-fi movie
Space thriller Serenity has beaten Star Wars to the title of best sci-fi movie in an SFX magazine poll of 3,000 fans. (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/6517155.stm)
Ok, it's a small sample poll but I find myself watching both since they've been on cable a lot recently. And I always finish watching Serenity.
So as of now, I'll give it to Serenity over Star Wars - A New Hope, but never over Empire.
It's better than the ewok infested Return of the Jedi as well.

That is a good point. Empire should be in any top ten. I guess it depends on who is voting. Those of us who are old enough to remember when it came out would probably be more likely to vote "Star Wars" and mean, the first "Star Wars (Or Empire, or Jedi) whereas younger folks might say Star Wars and clump the whole series in their mind.

See, this is what I was talking about. There is a strong, built-in audience that may be enough to greenlight a sequel.
A rabid fan base has pulled off bigger feats. Think about Highlander - multiple movies and a hit TV show all based on a groundswell of support after a lack-luster original run (OK, ignore that the movies were crap - at least they were made).

Very good point.
Unless the movie is some sort of flashback/prequel or Wash is cloned or something.
Of course maybe just part of the movie will have flashbacks that would bring Tudyk back for a few scenes - that would be legit.

I'm now onboard the whole Firefly/Serenity bandwagon, thanks to my chick, we've been watching it the last few days, and it's really good. The pilot is so bad in terms of it being nothing but an aumage to star wars and fifth element that it is unavoidable, but if you take yourself out of that the whole package is really great.

I really wish they would do another movie. i remember that there was talk of one. it would take place after the series but before the movie.

I got into the whole Firefly thing very late in the game.
AFTER the movie was released on DVD, I eventually watched the series and the movie. I love that universe. I love the characters.
I can kinda understand why serious scifi fans never embraced it. The whole horse/leather/bullets/dirt thing can be a bit too "down home" for fans of lightsabers & laserbeams.
And... it definitely felt like it was done on-the-cheap.
Very well written though. I'd watch another movie if they made one.

NASA is having a contest to name the newest addition to the ISS.
NASA wants your opinion in naming the International Space Station’s Node 3 – a connecting module and its cupola – before the two segments travel to space and are installed on the orbiting laboratory. The name should reflect the spirit of exploration and cooperation embodied by the space station, and follow in the tradition set by Node 1- Unity- and Node 2- Harmony. (http://www.nasa.gov/externalflash/name_ISS/index.html)
The choices:
Pick a Name for Node 3:
Earthrise
Legacy
Serenity
Venture
Or, name it yourself. Perhaps the RonFez.node? Anyway, Serenity is leading by 86%.
Voting will be open until March 20th, 2009. NASA will announce the winning name in April 2009.

Has anyone been watching Nathan Fillion's show Castle on ABC?
It's a terrible show, as far as cop shows go... totally unrealistic and full of cops who wear way too nice clothes. But Nathan Fillion as Rick Castle is so f'n funny in it, he makes the show enjoyable for what it is.
In the upcoming Halloween episode, Castle dresses up... and a pic has leaked:

Shiny.
Firefly to live on in new book of short stories
Joss Whedon's beloved Firefly/Serenity is long gone, but you can't stop the signal: Fans can look for more adventures of Capt. Mal Reynolds and the crew of the doughty ship in a series of short stories coming soon from Titan Books.
Writer/producer Jane Espenson—who wrote one episode of the Fox sci-fi series but is a longtime friend and colleague of Whedon's going back to her days on Buffy the Vampire Slayer—told us that she will be writing one of the stories, centering on the characters of Kaylee and Wash (obviously set in a time period before the events of the movie Serenity).
"I'm writing a short story set in the Firefly universe that someone's putting together," Espenson said in an interview on Sunday in Pasadena, Calif., where she was promoting her upcoming Syfy series Caprica. "Titan Books is putting together a collection written by various of the Firefly writers. But [it's a] very short story, ... 2,000 words."
She added: "Oh, I just came up with a very clever little short story that involves Kaylee and Wash, two characters that we haven't seen together that much."
Espenson's Firefly episode was "Shindig," the fourth episode in the series, which deals with a society dance and a duel. It's best loved by fans for Kaylee's appearance in an over-the-top flouncy ruffled dress.

I thought the same thing, but he seems to be calling it an homage, from the post I found linked to the comic.
I don’t know of a cartoonist that doesn’t list Watterson in his top three influences, so I won’t bore you with my treatise on how his work sparked my young imagination and ignited a lifelong love of comic strips and cartooning. I bet he wouldn’t be too thrilled with me aping his style to make a Joss Whedon/Serenity reference, nor would I be shocked if he didn’t get said reference.

I am in a hotel in Connecticut with only shitty TV. The sound is off, but Castle is on. Have no idea if the show is any good or not. Though I do have two observations. Nathan looks a little bloated and Dana Delaney really really had too much plastic surgery, her lips move, but the cheeks and chin don't.
