I love Kasha Varnishkes with mushroom sauce and pierogies and Kielbasa.

I'm Russian/Ukrainian.

I also love mac and cheese. PB and banana samiches. My dad's meatloaf.

That makes me a cracka. I guess.

It seems that since meat is expensive in Syria, my father's family doesn't eat it a lot. But, while there I got some Shishkabob, and HOLY SHIT was it good. They also have some dish that they put this tan sauce with some sort of oil floating on the top of, over very sticky rice. VERY good.

But my favorite is probably this little fast food kind of sandwich that they called a Showerma. That's as close as I can get the spelling. It's just meat, veggies and yogurt sauce inside a piece of pita bread, and it's one of the best things on the planet.

Aww shit. I just realized we're talking about comfort food, not just food. I'm glad AJinDC digs those sandwiches too, but I'm not really going to want one if I'm sick or sad. They're more of a happy time food, with some down time on the can later.

I'm not VERY familiar with cooking from the middle east, but on most nights while staying in a town on the outskirts of Damascus with my grandparents, we would eat soup/stew like dishes with some vegetables and a little meat in a broth. I distinctly remember eating okra and lamb in a red broth once. I never had any complaints with the food there. Since I was living on Immodium AD the whole time, I'd say those soups were a kind of comfort food.

Plain yogurt is really good too with those kids of food too. No idea why, it just is. There was a lady around the corner from us that made yogurt from scratch. We dropped a bucket off to her one day and picked up new yogurt another.
