View Full Version : HONEST question to Don and Mike fans.

OK. This is NOT meant to be another Don and Mike FLAME thread. If it turns out like that, I will understand why it disappears to that place all the MSteels and Horde King stuff went to. Probably right next to the farm all my dead pets got sent to.

Anyone who knows me longer than 10 posts on this board knows of my deep haterd for Don and Mike. They're not funny, and catching a little of them, waiting for my HUGE anntenna to warm up yesterday, made me remember just how terrible their show really is. But enough of that.

I want to know WHY Don and Mike still pull the numbers they do, in the opinion of their fans. Because the one thing I can't take away from them is that they make their station money and get sydicated. I don't understand it, but it's a fact and I have to respect their money making abilities for their employer, which is all they big wigs really care about.

Now I have some ideas, bare with me. I think that Don and Mike might have been one of the following:

A. Very edgy back in the day when they needed fans and then just totally pussied out. We call that Sternification Now. Because Howie invented crapping his own show out.

B. They were the most edgy thing on in a very bland market.

C. Different sense of humor in different areas. (This one makes no sense really, because if it were true, both areas wouldn't have loved Ron and Fez so much, but I put it out there.

and a very distant long shot:

D. They are funny and I just don't get it.

That's all. I just want to hear some honest opinions from Don and Mike fans. And I BEG of you to please keep this somewhat civil, because I really want to know what Don and Mike fans see in this show. I just don't get it. I ask people that don't like Don and Mike to keep it to themselves or other threads, PLEASE. I'm gathering info here, and I'd like to hear what they have to say. And if you're a Don and MIke fan who hates how I talk about them, here's your chance. Let me know what I've been missing.

www.unhallowed.com One Big SeXXXy Blog

Honestly, I just started to listen to them when they debuted on WYSP a few years back. YES, it was hard to listen at times but I still listened anyway mostly cause I wanted to see if they would say anything about O & A. I was a big O & A fan back then. Then even after D & M were off WYSP I would pick then up on Live 105 or WJFK when I would be working in the area and I would listen. They are not the funniest show on the radio but now and maybe it is because they have grown on me the fact is they entertain me. I laugh sometimes and they get me through the day and are a nice bridge into Ron & Fez. Shoot me if you like, sorry for having my own opinion crucify me if you must, you all probably do anyway...I like the show. The only thing I can NOT tolerate is Mike's impersonations. They all, no matter what voice he does sound like Mike. Not only that, they are the worst part of the show. Buzz does good news and Rob has his own funny parts here and there as well. Mike is funny when he is just being Mike. Don is hardly ever funny but he can really tell a good story. I think if anything the show is more of an entertainment show than a comedy show.

Maybe they get ratings because there isn't anything else worth listening to on from 3-7pm in DC. What other talk shows are on at that time? WTOP with traffic and weather together on the eights? CSPAN radio? It's a thin market. Anyway, what is the name of the band that plays that intro song to ron and fez?

Papabear, AJ and Fluff all pretty much said much of what I would have said (love Channel 4, btw, and have many times pictured Jim Vance AND Susan Kidd coming on to Wendy Reiger off the air). More of an occasional listener than a fan.

I turn off D&M more times than I turn them on these days, but when the times they do get me to laugh they are usually behind the scenes radio stuff, Buzz on the news, Rob in the background, the drinking shows, the pop culture observations, and the personal stories that, for whatever reason, their detractors see as a flaw.

I love that Don's wife is a bitch and his son is ungrateful; that his brother his sueing their parents; that Don is the world's dumbest millionaere; that Mike is dating a woman who is closer in age to his pre teen daughters; that he has two failed marriages; that they not only don't hide from their failures (like WNEW and WYSP), but they wheel them out and celebrate them and point them out in case anyone missed them. Heck, I listened to only one segment yesterday, and (like every other talk show in America) they were talking about Paula Abdul, American Ido, Dr. Phil and Pat O'Brien - and in the middle of that, Don's own drug arresst from 7 years ago came up, and they laughed about that.

Even though I respect that they take unscreened phone calls, I'm not really into the callers, the game shows or the interviews - although, I will always give them respect for actually asking Tony Curtis if Jamie Lee Curtis was born a dude (meanwhile, down in Florida, Ron was busy asking Janet Leigh the same thing).

A. Very edgy back in the day when they needed fans and then just totally pussied out. We call that Sternification Now. Because Howie invented crapping his own show out.

B. They were the most edgy thing on in a very bland market

When they were on WAVA I hated them they were your typical morning zoo. Extremely lame they catered to soccer moms and teenagers.

Then they moved to WJFK and they changed their style and were edgier than they Wava days. I am like AJ I listen but I am not a fan. I know people hate Don but I do laugh at him when he is telling his stories about being an idiot, burning crap in the oven, wrecking his car, just being a bafoon. Mike is ok, I like Buzz he is a good guy. Rob can be funny and annoying at the same time.

Now they do not have any competition in the afternoon drive.

WMAL,WTOP - Old man radio - good to get traffic reports every 10 minutes.

WTEM - Sports station - John Thompson Show and Sports Reporters. I like the sports reporters horrible signal in VA.

WTNT- conservative radio shows.

98 Rock - Micky and Amelia - I have only heard them once or twice during Ron and FEz commercials out of Baltimore they have afternoon drive now.

DC101, Mix 107, WARW, etc music stations.

Warw - Classic rock station

On a side note, Moe I am glad that you have asked for a cease fire on flame wars in this thread. I know people are passionate about their opinions, but remember if everyone liked the same stuff it would be a very boring world. There is a reason why baskin robbins has 31 flavors otherwise we would all be eating vanilla. So if you dont like something that someone else might like big fucking deal.
I'm not a fan, but I wasn't a hater like most were during the WNEW days either. I have a theory on why people think they suck.

Frankly, they are comparing them to their favorite shows, whether it was O&A or R&F. On that note, sure they sucked. They were nowhere near as good as those two shows. Take away those others, meaning never were on the radio so they'd have nothing to compare to, and I would almost guarantee that a lot of the haters wouldn't think D&M weren't as bad as they make them out to be.

Here's a little proof. When O&A and D&M were civil, you didn't hear nearly as many people bashing D&M. When the shit hit the fan, all of a sudden everyone was screaming that D&M sucked. That ladies and gentlemen, I call sheep. If the wool fits baby, then Baa Baa Baa.

I just wanted to quickly address King's post seperately. I'm forced to agree with him that a lot of the NYC hating didn't start until the feud with O&A, and that does make it look like most of the haters were just sheep. That is indeed gay. Don't hate what other hate. Make up your own mind. That's like jumping from Stern's show to O&A and laughing at the fact that his fans follow him blindly, but you just did the same thing hating what O&A hate. WE're better than that.

All I can really do is separate myself from the people who hate Don and Mike because of the O&A feud. I gave them 2 weeks of my life. I was unemplyed at the time, and the 1st week was before the whole feud. Don and Mike were on the Noon to 3 shift or 11 to 3, whatever it was that week. WNEW's schedule was the worst. I listened to whole shows for that week, and I laughed maybe twice, honestly. It was just terrible. There was some foreign guy who was doing a Spiderman bit that made me laugh. The hour long calls from his fucking wife mad me want to eat a bullet.

THEN, I gave them another week around the time the feud was on. I guess I was just listening to see what they were gonna say in rebuttal to what O&A had done, and it was still the most bland, unentertaining, college grade radio I'd ever heard.

Thank you. And may the converstaion continue.

What major market city isn't a bland radio market these days? The worst radio I've ever heard are some of the biggest cities.

Oh, and curtoid, I can't speak for other markets because I haven't been to other markets for any amount of time in a long time, but NYC is probably the WORST market on the fucking planet. Every radio station is gayer than the next.

Mornings here are enough to make you vomit on your own shoes. It's all bland talk. NONE of the DJ's are worth a shit, least of all Stern. Scott and Todd=gay. Balthazar or some shit can suck my taint. The Z morning Zoo or whatever they'll going by now sounds like an internet transmission of 8th graders.

Gay gay gay. So I just wanted to agree with you.

Let's be fair Moe, at least college radio makes me laugh once in a while. Also, I can't believe how much you guys like Buzz!? He reads the f'n news people. Sure he adds a few gay quips in the middle with his over-the-top radio voice, but surely that doesn't warrant that he is talented. I guess I'd like to hear what Buzz's appeal is to those who mentioned him as pretty good. Just tell me it isn't bc of the reverse "sheep" theory that King has pushed. If I remember correctly, Fez had a radio thing for Buzz.

entire market. Everything else was either music or local sports talk.
Nothing is worse than those losers. I'd listen to 1000 hours of Don and

the Braves and how much Bobby Cox sucks.

I really don't hate Don and Mike at all. They're OK, nothing special. There is definately a lot worse on the dial.
I'd like to add that I agree with Buzz being the shit. I caught that last half hour or whatever before O&A a lot and I remember Buzz being interupted by some stupid fart sound clip almost every time. I hope if McCord dies before Imus dies again and actually gets buried this time, that Buzz will slide in and do the news.

So what, that's it? That was all the Don and Mike fans had to say for their boys? Not only am I noticing that no one really LOVES them, more like got used to them, I am also noticing that there aren't a lot of people who think they're even worth defending.

What a mediocre show at best. Even their fans hardly care.

BUMP....for the last time.

OK, this is your LAST CHANCE as a Don and Mike fan to answer my question. I have been completely and utterly UNIMPRESSED with the responses from people who call themselves "fans." I don't mean that they weren't honest or anything, I just can't believe that about 90% of fans said they don't laugh at the show all the time, they only like one or two people on the show or things like they don't turn it on as much as they turn it off.

NO ONE seems amazed by Don and Mike's on air skills. Most of you seem to just leave them on in the background as a bland talk radio soundscape.

Again, I guess I shouldn't be SHOCKED, but I am somewhat surprised. So Don and Mike fans, read my 1st post on the top of Page 1 and please give honest answers. Thanks.

Why not ask this question on a D&M board (rather than a board devoted to R&F fans that skews from NY)? You would probably get a better answer to your question there.

But I'll never research it because I don't care to join. There are a lot of crossover fans here, they should be able to tell me their opinions. I know there's plenty of people who were into O&A who are also into Ron and Fez and post here. So I figured there would be the same mix of Don and MIke fans as well. But this thread shows that there don't really seem to be any rabid Don and Mike fans.

It would have to be pre-1998...that's really when they jumped screaming and on fire over the shark.

It's not like they had funny "bits"...the show itself as a whole was just fun to listen to. Just riffing on everything, a lot more energy, Mike could actually do GOOD voices, like Anthony, Buzz got at least a full hour to do the news and comments stuff at rhe end (always the best part of the show), they seemed to like having callers on the air and spent more time taking calls instead of acting like they were a burden.

But again...WHY YA CARE?!??

If you guys hate them so much, just fucking ignore them. They haven't been good in years, so who gives a shit?
