invaluable tool in the fight against crime. This claim was toned down
somewhat during the gestation of the proposal. <br />

<p>What will this lead to? Giving my ID evertime I hit a state border? </p><p>This reminds me of when I was in Syria, going up to the Golan Heights. That's still a hot spot, and we had to pass though like 3 or 4 checkpoints where they scrutinized our passports and looking in our shit just to go up there and visit family. They held us up for a minute because I had my Sega Game Gear back then. I guess they thought it might have been some secret Jew transmitting device. Stupid asses.</p><p>Just say NO to national IDs.</p>

<p></p>
<p>The REAL ID Act requires driver's licenses to include a "common
machine-readable technology." This will, of course, make identity theft
easier. Assume that this information will be collected by bars and
other businesses, and that it will be resold to companies like
ChoicePoint and Acxiom. It actually doesn't matter how well the states
and federal government protect the data on driver's licenses, as there
will be parallel commercial databases with the same information.</p>
<p>Even worse, the same specification for RFID chips embedded in
passports includes details about embedding RFID chips in driver's
licenses. I expect the federal government will require states to do
this, with all of the associated <a href="http://www.schneier.com/crypto-gram-0410.html#3">security problems</a> (e.g., surreptitious access).</p>
<p>REAL ID requires that driver's licenses contain actual addresses,
and no post office boxes. There are no exceptions made for judges or
police -- even undercover police officers. This seems like a major
unnecessary security risk.</p>
<p>REAL ID also prohibits states from issuing driver's licenses to
illegal aliens. This makes no sense, and will only result in these
illegal aliens driving without licenses -- which isn't going to help
anyone's security. (This is an interesting insecurity, and is a direct
result of trying to take a document that is a specific permission to
drive an automobile, and turning it into a general identification
device.)</p>
<p>REAL ID is expensive. It's an unfunded mandate: the federal
government is forcing the states to spend their own money to comply
with the act. I've seen estimates that the cost to the states of
complying with REAL ID will be $120 million. That's $120 million that
can't be spent on actual security.</p>
<p>And the wackiest thing is that none of this is required. In October
2004, the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 was
signed into law. That law included stronger security measures for
driver's licenses, the security measures recommended by the 9/11
Commission Report. That's already done. It's already law.</p>

<p>The US continues to base all it's policy on the lowest common denominator of our society. Do we truly need to have a full-time babysitter? Do we really want all our actions tracked, good or bad? Do we all need to feel like Gaylord Focker? At some point we need to ask ourselves if we really are free any longer? Hell, were also now taxed worse than when we left Britain for that and other reasons. Fuck, I'm all over the place. Have another one buddy.</p>

<img border="0" src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v507/Catholiccannon/gunsnammo.jpg" /> I like to dissect women. Did you know I'm utterly insane?<br />because
there's no standard with obtaining a DL nationwide. most illegal aliens
in this country obtain a valid NJ/VA/CA/or FL driver's license through
fraud, because those states in particular don't scrutinize apllicants/
I know NJ just made it tougher, i don't want to hear britching from NJ
residents, you've just been brought up to the rest of us. I mean Jesus,
it was only 5 years ago that a NJ DL didn't even have a picture on it!<p> </p><p> </p><p>With
that driver's license, they can obtain other vaild id. but it's all
based on the initial id obtained through fraud. And after all, a
driver's license dosn't denote anything other than that state allows
you to drive. I know it's become the defacto national id, but it's not.

<p>How was it "misrepresented?"</p><p>I'm tired of this horseshit mentality in this country of just pissing all over the states, and the laziness that allows it to happen. If the states have shitty ID's, then the states need to fix them...the answer isn't to call in Big Brother and allow the federal government to create a national ID card with the same currently flawed technology that'll just create identity theft on a bigger and more serious scale. Make the ID system of the states universal to be more cohesive if necessary...but I'm sorry, the very IDEA of a "national ID card" flies in the face of just being fucking AMERICAN. And I'm sick of people just rolling over and taking this shit up the ass.</p><p>Besides, why can't they just work at making our Social Security cards more difficult to duplicate? We all already have to have those...but NOOOOOOO, let's throw ANOTHER spanner into the machine that doesn't work. It's been the calling card of the feds over the last 25 years..."the government isn't working? MAKE IT BIGGER!!! Fix the broken part? FUCK NO!!!"</p>

hope you are aware that the government and several private
organizations already have all of you personal information. this
doesn't change anything.<p> </p><p> </p><p>i don't honestly see the problem here. we've already been forced to have a number assigned to us, or does anyone here <strong>NOT</strong> know their SSN.</p><p> </p><p>National
ID's are in use in Germany, UK, France, Belgium, Greece,
Luxembourg, Portugal, Spain, and roughly 100 other nations. I don't see

the
government wanted to "get" you, a card's not going to help or hinder

drawbacks. otherwise this thread is worthless.</p><p> </p><p>There are huge, almost profound privacy issues, but there are also benifits when it comes to fraud and identiy theft. </p>

Why resort to this instead of just kicking the licenses and state ID's into gear?
