ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! I feel like I wasted my time watching that 2 years. Yes, they did explain a lot in the last few episodes, but what about Sophie finding Justing dead and then all those freaking crops dying around him??? And is she pregnant? Did she bring him back? FUCK HBO!

i love this show to death but to be realistic, this is probably a smart move on HBO's part...it's not thier responsibility to keep great shows running just b/c they have artistic value...they have stockholders and subscribers to please and I imagine this show didn't hold much mass appeal to the american public...mainly b/c its not the sopranos and everyone was ugly and real....

It's a sad loss but I'm glad just to have those two seasons...fuck I wonder how they even got it past the pitch board to begin with....

I don't really understand it.

When the creators first envisioned the show, they said it had a definate beginning and end and that it wasn't designed to go on indefinately.

I'm betting that HBO dangled a carrot in front of them hinting that they would probably go 3 seasons. So the writers stretch the story out. I wish now that HBO had just said, "you've got 1 more season" make it good.

I'm not sure which I'm most pissed about, the cancellation or the season finale.

WTF? That can't leave Sophie pregnant and supposedly evil!
I undestand HBO can't leave shows on forever, but the finale should
have been more of a FINALE so to speak. They left a lot
unexplained.

According to
some articles I read about the cancellation, it got better ratings than
The Wire (and one other that I forget), but the Wire was renewed.
Although, I don't know how much the difference is in production costs
between the two series.

The show was pitched as a
movie. HBO execs were impressed and offerred to do it as a series
instead. A finite, 3 season series.

I heard that the main reason it got cut was because their producer signed on with a rival company. So they did not want to do it without him.

Perhaps they'll do what Whedon has done with "Serenity" - make a full length theatrical release based on a cancelled television program, "Firefly".

Maybe the ending was left ambiguous on purpose. Sort of life goes on, and the eternal battle of good vs. evil never ends and it is up to the viewer to make up their own ending.

It seems a cop out but maybe this is how it was supposed to end. Very similar to Stephen King's Dark Tower series, the original end is the gunslinger standing in front of the tower. At first i read it and thought a huge cop out and read what happened as Roland climbed the stairs and it made the original ending seem better. The goal was to find the Dark Tower and he did.

Very similar here, why put out a bad 3rd season when you can make the people come to their own conclusion, afterall HBO is the water cooler network you know.

But hard to believe Arli$$ lasted more then it should have (meaning over 1 season) while this gets the ax and it came to an online petition to get the wire back on. BTW The Wire, is a much much better show then Carnivale and better story lines as well

Daniel Knauf did a two parter with AV club about Carnivale. It's interesting and you can read all about the production of the show, but here is Knauf talking about the 4 unproduced seasons and the macro arc of the show.

AVC: What were your plans for what would have come in the four unmade seasons?

DK: Like I said, I’m not going to claim I knew the minute detail. Season three is five years later. We find Jonesy—he survived his gunshot wound and is pitching for a professional baseball team. His wife [Libby] is a typical baseball wife back in ’39. The carnival is completely split up; everybody’s gone their separate ways. The only vestige of the carnival as it was is Ben and Samson, and they’re working at another carnival, still on Management’s trail.

Then on the Brother Justin side, we find he’s become this incredibly politically influential radio preacher. And there’s Iris and Sofie, and they’re both in this fight. He’s a shell, almost, and these two women are in a power struggle over who’s controlling Brother Justin. Sofie is Brother Justin’s wife. Of course, she’s his daughter, but he doesn’t know that. She knows that. She could bring him down pretty easily, but she’s afraid of herself now, too.

Then we introduce, in the very first episode, you see this 4-year-old kid come running up and hugging Brother Justin, saying “Daddy.” Is this Brother Justin’s child, or is this Ben’s child, because they both had relations with Sofie? That would kind of tee us off to the second one. That would take us through the war. And then the first half of that would be, “Avengers assemble,” winds of war calling them together, gotta get this group back together again. Ben’s like, “This isn’t just about me. This is about us.” And pulling everybody out of their lives and answering this call, and moving into going to Europe to try to acquire these documents or… I knew they were going to be talismans. What they’re going to need when they’re engaged in this war. Then there’d be a confrontation of some sort at the end of season four.

Then taking us to the end, it’s all about the [atomic] bomb. It’s all about the Manhattan Project and worrying about it, finding out what it is. The Germans have a competing project, and trying to stop it. Trying to stop the bomb from happening, because in Ben’s mind, detonation of the atom bomb is the end of the world. What he doesn’t realize is that it’s just the end of his world. To him, it’s an end to Avatars; it’s an end to everything. But he’s misinterpreted it. He’s interpreted it as the end of the world. He thinks he’s saving the world, but what he learns before the end is that, “I have to let this happen, because if I don’t let this happen, mankind will remain in a state of adolescence.” He learns that’s really why Sofie is called the Omega. She is the only female, the last Avatar. What it’s all leading up to is two Avatars, she and Ben having this child. They actually have to sacrifice this child in the blast. That was my crazy notion.

Now I have to kill you because I told you. [Laughs.]

Right now the only show that I watch on HBO is Game of Thrones. I used to love True Blood, but this past season was pretty dumb
