<p>Somebody might have leaked Revolution pics. Here's the console itself:</p><p><img width="400" height="107" border="0" src="http://www.weblogsinc.com/common/images/1411853428673731.JPG?0.8219070545819441" /></p><p>And here's the controller(s):</p><p> <img width="400" height="300" border="0" src="http://www.weblogsinc.com/common/images/1252683260425672.JPG?0.751425320732948" /></p><p>I
think its fake because the console itself is way too similar to the Mac

they are implemented before I make any judgements. We'll see this

<p><a href="http://www.gamespot.com/news/2005/05/16/news_6124681.html" target="_blank">Playstation 3 Specs unveiled.</a> </p><p>LOS ANGELES--Today saw the second of the big three console makers
announce their next-generation platform. At its pre-E3 press
conference, Sony Computer Entertainment gave the world its first look
at the PlayStation 3, as it now is officially called.</p>
<p>
The name was not unexpected, since Sony had been running an extensive <a href="http://www.gamespot.com/news/2005/05/14/news_6124579.html">teaser-ad</a>
campaign prepping the public for the PlayStation 3. The company had
laid a blanket of posters around the Los Angeles Convention Center,
site of the Electronic Entertainment Expo (aka E3). Bus stalls and
billboards around the convention center proclaimed "Prepare for Chang3"
in the distinctive PlayStation font with partial shots of the Dual
Shock controller's square-circle-triangle-X buttons. </p>
<p>
Sony also confirmed the PlayStation 3, will use Blu-Ray discs as its
media format. The discs can hold up to six times as much data as
current-generation DVDs. It will also support CR-ROM, CDR+W, DVD,
DVD-ROM, DVD-R, DVD+R formats. It also confirmed the machine would be
backward-compatible all the way to the original PlayStation. It will
also have slots for Memory Stick Duo, a SD slot, and a compact flash
memory slot. It will also sport a slot for a detachable 2.5 inch HDD
somewhat similar the Xbox 360's. </p>
<p>
Out of the box, the PS3 will have the capability to support seven
Bluetooth controllers. It will also have six USB slots for
peripherals--four up front and two in the back. </p>
<p>
Sony also laid out the technical specs of the device. The PlayStation 3
will feature the much-vaunted Cell processor, which will run at 3.2
Ghz, giving the whole system 2.18 teraflops of overall performance. It
will sport 256mb XDR main RAM at 3.2 Ghz, and have 256MB of GDDR VRAM
at 700mhz. </p>
<p>
Sony also unveiled the PS3's graphics chip, the RSX "Reality
Synthesizer based on Nvidia technology. The GPU will be capable of
128bit pixel precision, 1080p resolution, some of the highest HD
resolution around. It also has over 300 million transistors, larger
than any processor available commercially today. It was manufactured
using the 90nm process with 8 layers of metal. The RSX is more powerful
than two GeForce 6800 ultras, which would cost rough $1000 if bought
today. </p>
<p>
The PlayStation 3 will also sport some hefty multimedia features, such
as video chat, internet access, digital photo viewing, digital audio
and video. Sony Computer Entertainment head Ken Kutaragi introduced it
as a "Super computer for computer entertainment."
</p>
<p> </p><p>I read
somewhere else that the wireless controllers won't need batteries, you
charge them up by simply placing them on the top of the PS3. They also
said that the Playstation 3 was running a real time demo of Unreal 3,
which is so advanced even the fastest computers out today can't run
it.<br />

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. To Launch its Next Generation Computer Entertainment System, PLAYSTATION 3 in Spring 2006
<br />
<br />
Unrivaled Performance with the Introduction of Cell Processor and Many
Advanced Technologies, and Backwards compatible with PlayStation® and
PlayStation®2
<br />
<br />
Los Angeles, CALIF., May 16, 2005 – At a press conference held in
Los Angeles, California, today, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI)
revealed the outline of its PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3) computer entertainment
system, incorporating the world’s most advanced Cell processor with
super computer like power. Prototypes of PS3 will also be showcased at
the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), the world’s largest interactive
entertainment exhibition held in Los Angeles, from May 18th to 20th.
<br />
<br />
PS3 combines state-of-the-art technologies featuring Cell, a
processor jointly developed by IBM, Sony Group and Toshiba Corporation,
graphics processor (RSX) co-developed by NVIDIA Corporation and SCEI,
and XDR memory developed by Rambus Inc. It also adopts BD-ROM (Blu-ray
Disc ROM) with maximum storage capacity of 54 GB (dual layer) ,
enabling delivery of entertainment content in full high-definition (HD)
quality, under a secure environment made possible through the most
advanced copyright protection technology. To match the accelerating
convergence of digital consumer electronics and computer technology,
PS3 supports high quality display in resolution of 1080p(*) as
standard, which is far superior to 720p/1080i.
<br />
<br />
With an overwhelming computing power of 2 teraflops, entirely new
graphical expressions that have never been seen before will become
possible. In games, not only will movement of characters and objects be
far more refined and realistic, but landscapes and virtual worlds can
also be rendered in real-time, thereby elevating the freedom of
graphics expression to levels not experienced in the past. Gamers will
literally be able to dive into the realistic world seen in large screen
movies and experience the excitement in real-time.
<br />
<br />
In 1994, SCEI launched the original PlayStation® (PS), followed by
PlayStation®2 (PS2) in 2000 and PlayStation®Portable (PSP®) in 2004,
every time introducing the latest advancement in technology and
bringing innovation to the interactive entertainment software creation.
Over 13,000 titles have been developed by now, creating a software
market that sells more than 250 million copies annually. PS3 offers
backward compatibility enabling gamers to enjoy these enormous assets
from PS and PS2 platforms.
<br />
<br />
PlayStation family of products are sold in more than 120 countries
and regions around the world. With cumulative shipments reaching more
than 102 million for PS and approximately 89 million for PS2, they are
the undisputed leaders and have become the standard platform for home
entertainment. After 12 years from the introduction of the original PS
and 6 years from the launch of PS2, SCEI brings PS3, the newest
platform with the most advanced next generation computer entertainment
technology.
<br />
<br />
With the delivery of Cell based development tools that has already
begun, development of game titles as well as tools and middleware are
in progress. Through collaboration with world’s leading tools and
middleware companies, SCEI will offer full support to new content
creation by providing developers with extensive tools and libraries
that will bring out the power of the Cell processor and enable

If the PS3 online gameplay is free, that'd be great. While PS2 has maintained free online play, XBOX still has the best. However, hopefully the "cost" of playing online on PS3 will be included in its price, which will most likely be pretty fucking high.

<p>Here's something I have to classify as rumor not because there isn't confirmation (there is, it was right in the Sony Press Release) but because it is so incredibly dumb that I refuse to believe any company could be so boneheaded to do something like this which will completely sabotage its goals for this system which have already made the price of the PS3 skyrocket.</p><p>Apparently the cheaper priced PS3 will not only have a smaller HD, but will not have built in WiFi support (for networking, not controllers), no support for Memory Sticks, Compact Flash, or SD Flash, and will not have HDMI outputs. The HDMI thing is a HUGE problem if true since Blu-Ray movies can only be played in HD resolutions over a HDMI connection, which would literally cripple it as a Blu-Ray player, which was pretty much the only reason the drive was included in the first place! If you bought a Blu-Ray movie and played it in the cheaper modeal PS3, it would look exactly the same as a standard DVD, if this is true. Worse yet, if I read it correctly, it wouldn't even have support for component outputs, so you wouldn't even be able to play games in HD! I was ready to say that unlike Microsoft, Sony pulled off this two model thing correctly since developers would be able to count on a Hard Drive being available and improve games accordingly, but if this is true it's even worse than what Microsoft did because at least with the Core 360 you can later upgrade to a Hard Drive where it would be impossible to upgrade the cheaper PS3 to a HDMI output at a later date.<br /></p><p>It's so completely astounding in its ludicrousness that I can't believe it until someone from Sony comes out and says it.<br /></p>

i keep hearing about the lack of an HDMI thing, and that would really suck but i know ill have to shell out for the big guy anyways. could they have possibly reconfigured the system outputs and just have it stemming out from somewhere else? or is it a cost issue, because i dont know how expensive they are. if the blu-ray relies on the HDMI it really would be an awful decision, and cheap buyers would only really get a PS2.5<br />
<p>I've got the Final Fantasy XIII thing straightened out now. There will be 3 of them as I mentioned in a series known as Fabula Nova Crystallis, and the previous link was a preview of the frist game entitled simply Final Fantasy XII. The second one is a mobile game for cell phones entitled Final Fantasy XII Agito. I doubt it will ever be released here and if it is it will probably be a very very very very very long time before it is.</p><p><a href="http://i.i.com.com/cnet.g2/images/2006/127/reviews/928790_20060508_screen002.jpg" target="_blank">Here's a preview if you're interested.</a> </p><p>And here's the biggie: Final Fantasy Versus XIII, for the PS3. It will be developed by the Kingdom Hearts team. And that's about it at this point. I don't even know if it will be a sequel to the original XIII.</p><p><img width="800" height="450" border="0" src="http://www.1up.com/media?id=2857831&type=lg" /></p><p>That shit was way too complicated. </p>

I have a question about this new controller, it says it can sense movement. So does that mean it will sense when someone threw the controller and cause the game to stop dicking said gamer?<br />

right, so basically, even though it will be able to play my games, such as GTA:SA, I will have to recomplete the 97% or whatever retardedly sad number I've reached over time.<br />

I think it's a safe bet there will be a memory card slot for ps/ps2 that won't work with ps3 games.<br />
<p><a href="http://www.gamespot.com/features/6125429/index.html" target="_blank">Here's a rundown on the current specs of the PS3.</a></p><p>The PSP handheld will be able to work with the new console. The PSP
will be able to function as a remote control or as a sort of controller
for the PlayStation 3. To demonstrate the possibilities of PSP-to-PS3
connectivity, Harrison showed off Formula 1, a PS3 racing game, which
could output a video stream to the PSP that allows the player to use
the portable as a rearview mirror while playing the game on the PS3.</p><p>That...... is so fucking cool, if not completely useless.</p><p>Sony's original specifications stated that the PlayStation 3 would
come with three Ethernet ports, but the newly revealed specifications
from E3 06 show that the system will arrive with only one Ethernet
port. The 60GB version of the PlayStation 3 will also come with Wi-Fi
built-in, but the 20GB version will only have the Ethernet port. We
can't ignore the fact that the PS3 has all the tools to
function as a personal video recorder and home-media server. The
larger 60GB drive will likely prove much more useful than the 20GB
drive if you wish to take advantage of the additional media
functionality.</p><p>So, theoretically, the PS3 can be a Tivo. That's pretty cool. At least all the money you'll need to spend for this thing will go somewhere.</p><p>Also, about the Blu-Ray movies. Appararently, whether or not the cheaper model will be able to play Blu-Ray movies in HD will be reliant on the copy protection used on the disc. It will allow studios to lock out HD streams of movies to any other output than HDMI. So the cheaper model will still be able to play Blu-Ray movies in HD resolutions (720p, 1080i, but not 1080p) if the studio releasing the disc allows it too. Which is a huge question as yet unanswered. if you want to watch a movie in 1080p you will have to get the more expensive model since the HDMI output is the only one that can handle that resolution.</p>

<p>Jesus Christ, this would have made for a nice birthday present, but at these ridiculous prices it looks like a present for 2007. </p>

I will kinda agree with HBox. When I first saw the price, my jaw dropped. But if the thing is basically a tivo, has wifi, and all this other nonsense, it actually is priced pretty resonable. Tivo's are a couple hundred, or were when I last looked. All in all, it's pretty fuckin sick. That rearview mirror thing with the PSP is almost retarded, but maybe the coolest thing I've ever heard of for a video game system. I'll still wait a month, cause 599 after a month will prob be 499, then Ill def get one, even just to play games and have the tivo shit<br />
Some possibly huge news. TGS is happening in Japan right now and Sony announced that they are lowering the price of the lower level PS3 from $499 to the equivalent of $425 and they have added HDMI to that model. No confirmation yet on if this price drop will carried over here as well.<br />

Lower price is good. But there's really no launch titles that catch my attention. A year ago I thought I'd be all over a PS3 pre-order but now I don't care about it. Anyone here pre-ordering one?<br />

Even at $425, Nintendo's Wii remains cheaper by almost $200. Mighty tempting.

I have a PC if I want great graphics..seems like the problem with video games these days is that its the same old, same old, nothing really new. When games went from 2D to 3D with the PS1 it changed the gameplay. Since then other than some notable exceptions (GTA for example) seems like games havent changed much and are getting boring.</p>

I don't know what it would be like for PS3, but PSX's and PS2's could only play japanese or American games on their native console unless it was hacked, and there isn't going to be a reliable hack for the PS3 for at least a year. However, Blu-Ray movies will be region locked, so if you want to use it for that purpose you might run into problems. HOWEVER, I think I remember reading that as far as Blu-Ray movies go that North America and Japan will be in the same region so you wouldn't have anything to worry about. Don't take my word for it though because I am not 100% sure (on the Blu-Ray movies thing).<br /></p>
