America's National Football League is to grill Malcolm Glazer at
its spring meeting this week over his £790m acquisition of Manchester
United.

Mr Glazer already owns American Football team the Tampa Bay
Buccaneers. The NFL is keen to establish whether his deal to buy the
Premiership club conflicts with his ownership of the Bucs.

another interesting aspect is:

Separately, it has emerged that the Glazers may set up a team to play
in America's soccer league, creating "Manchester United USA". Mexico's
largest football team, Chivas Rayadas del Guadalajara, already has a
Chivas USA in the American league. Glazer's team could play at one of
the three Major League stadiums dedicated to soccer in the US, with
three more set to be built.

Man U USA, bad team name, but good for MLS overall.

A peek into the Life of Boring Interest (http://profiles.myspace.com/users/14086885).

SkyNews from the UK has been covering this like it was the Scott Peterson trial. The Brits are so enraged by the thought of this guy buying soccer's version of the Yankees. I don't know much about Malcolm Glazer but he dpesn't seem like a Steinbrenner or an Angelos.

It's a really complicated situation....

I read an article on ESPN about it, and I think Man U was set up like the Packers are, where the whole team was basically sold in shares to regular people, and I think Glazer brought all the stock, or at least a majority share

We have a poster on here, Wormwood, that seems pretty into soccer, id like to hear his opinion...

While it was true that Man U was listed on the exchange and people could buy a portion of the team, over 75% of the team was owned by about 4 large groups, one of which was Glazer. Two of the other large groups sold to him giving him over 50%, the final large group sold and gave him over the 75% (along with some other minor share holders) needed to take control of the team and de-list them. The only largish group left is the Man U supporters - but they have no power anymore.

Its not totally like the GB Packers. Man U was only listed in the early 90's - and it wasn't listed to give back to the fans, but to make more money.

The fans are just upset becuase they fear Glazer will raise prices or lower the quality of the team (which would be nuts) to offest the debt needed for the purchase.

When Roman Abramovich bought Chelsea 2 years ago there was some fan backlash as well. He soon proved himself a savior by not only paying off all of the clubs debt but he also brought in an ass load of his OWN money and purchased some high quality players (ie. Damien Duff, Wayne Bridge, Joe Cole and Juan Sebastian Veron). Chelsea ran away with the league title this season. Ticket prices remained the same as well as club merchandise.

Glazer does not plan to run this team out of his own pocket, its gonna come out of the supporters wallets through higher ticket prices and an increase in merchandise cost. Man. U. season ticket holders are already giving up their seats in protest.

I believe a lot of the fans anger is xenophobic too. They have extreme loyalty to their region and don’t want some fat ass American messing with their dynasty. But like every other sports fan i'm sure they will be quick to forgive if they get some silverware next season.

I just don't like that most of the money he's using for this is borrowed, and in the current climate of soccer, where the money is starting to run out, the team could potentially be in real trouble $$$ wise. Just look at Leeds United, a team that amassed a lot of debt to be competitve, assumed they would be in the European competitions to pay off the debt and get the fat TV rights checks form the EPL, UEFA, etc. but failed to the point where they almost closed up shop when they were relegated from the EPL

This was the guy that kliled the MLS team in Tampa by jacking up the rent, and when he had a chance to save the team, he turned his back on them which led to the team dying. He claims to be a huge soccer fan, but all he wants to do is turn Man U. into the McDonalds of world soccer and then he'll jump ship when there's nothing left. As a shareholder in Man U (well, not long apparently) htis really pisses me off.
