Bobo is absolutely right. These idiots that were calling up saying you're burning american ideals when you burn the flag were making my blood boil. And Bobo seriously couldn't have spelled it out for them any clearer. I'm so angry right now.

<p>Bobo,</p><p> I'm looking forward to your flag burning event. (pending the defeat of this harmful legislation). Though I feel flag burning is a useless form of protest, I believe laws against this form of protest, are more "anti-American" than anything. I've never wanted to burn a flag, but I'll be there with you, if you live up to your flag burning record attempt. </p><p> To anyone who wants to say I'm wrong for joining Bobo, I say this... What the hell else am I supposed to do, to get my voice heard, as a person who isn't allowed to vote (simply because I got caught with 2 grams of cocaine, 6 years ago)?</p><p> I think there was a reason that the FIRST amendment to the Constitution addressed the topic of FREE SPEECH!!!</p>

<p>To Badorties: I agree, although I don't think it is as
complicated as being a dogmatic distraction. I simply think it is
the easy topic. How hard is it to say "well, if you are against
this amendment, then you are unamerican and unpatriotic." It is
also a lot more complicated to push real issues, such as health,
inflation, unemplyment, highway infrustructure(sp?), pollution,
defense, imigration, WAR...just to name a few.</p><p>To
Knowledged_one: I don't believe anyone would want to burn the
9/11 flag. It is in itself a relic. However, if there is a
replica, than it is free reign. There is no significance for a
random flag from wal-mart. Stop reaching for extremes. If
burning flags isn't your cup of tea, than by no means burn one,
however, stop telling others what they can and cannot do in the name of
patriotism. That is the true nature of free speach, and what this
is all about. Also, I don't believe PapaBear was complaining
about being unable to vote as much as saying that protests, etc, are
his only way of expressing himself now. If he has served his
time, and considered rehabilitated, then I don't see why all of his
rights should be refused. </p><p> </p><p>I'm sorry if I
ruffled feathers. I don't typically speak up for fear of the
wrath of the board! However, this one, I am passionate
about. I also can't stand those who don't have a real arguement:</p><p>person1: "I hate flag burning!"</p><p>person2: "Why is that?"</p><p>person1: "YOUR NOT AMERICAN. YOUR UNPATRIOTIC. YOU DON'T SUPPORT THE TROOPS."</p><p> </p>

<p>So what you are saying is we should pick and choose which flags we burn - does that not go against what you are saying is a freedom of speech/expression.</p><p>Just let me know-9/11 flag off limits but replica flag no big deal. What about a flag off of a soldiers casket are those ok or are we picking and choosing again.</p><p>And to clarify i said nothing about being unpatriotic about burning a flag, however in my opinion which i have under the freedom of speech i am more then free to voice that opinion. You are much like papabear you would prefer your freedoms only when they benefit you. And with papabear yeah he paid his debt to society, but he will continue to serve his other punishment (lack of voting, not able to hold elected office ( i think this is correct)) for the rest of his life because he broke the rules. I am not saying he should be denied a job or a place to live, merely don't complain because one thing doesn't work out when you break the rules.</p>

going to extremes. No, I don't have the right to burn a flag off
a soldiers casket. That is not MY flag. If the family who
does have charge of that flag chooses to burn it, then that is their
choice... </p><p>And to clarify
i said nothing about being unpatriotic about burning a flag, however in

--I didn't compain about anything in your previous paragraph. I
don't understand much of what you are talking about here. I never
denied you any right, nor did I complain when you chose to voice
them. I did put in a statement about denying people the choice of
doing things in the name of patriotism, and should have put that in a
more generalized term rather than my paragraph directed at you.
For that I am sorry. </p><p>And
again, I think you are missing my whole PapaBear point. I don't
deny that he did something that meritted penalties. Those
penalties including revoktion of certain rights. However that
doesn't include other rights that he should still have that are
completely unrelated to his crime, punishment, or consequences of
either. He still has the remaining rights, and that doesn't apply
under the "it only applies when you want it to apply," rule. It
should apply always. (Used apply way to many times in that last
sentance!) </p>

<p>I don't normally agree with what Teabag has to say, but his last couple of posts caused me to notice what Knowledged_one said in response to my post. Kudos to you, Teabag for pointing out that the constitution doesn't say felons can't vote. </p><p>There are several reasons that make disenfranchisement of non-violent felons ridiculous. First of which is the original definition of a felony...</p><ol><li>One of several grave crimes, such as murder, rape, or burglary, punishable by a more stringent sentence than that given for a misdemeanor.</li></ol><p>Another reason would be, as Knowledged_one said, I was "caught" with coke. Does this mean, if you do coke, but you don't get caught, it makes you more capable of voting (or being President)?</p><p>The fact is, the current use of felony charges has been expanded over time to fit the needs of politicians.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">It's pretty amazing that people can see the flag as a sacred
symbol of our nation, and at the same time know almost nothing about our
constitution. People have (as people often say of the flag) fought and
died for the constitution. We should all
be a little more familiar with it. The
fact that someone could actually believe that in the US
there is no right to vote is brain-melting, ape-shit insane. Please, people, read the founding document of
your country. <br />
<br />
To reply to <span style="color: black;">furie, I do believe that the bill Bobo is referring to would be for an
amendment to the constitution, making it essentially bulletproof against any
court in the </span><span style="color: black;">US</span><span style="color: black;">.
That is, of course, why they are going for an amendment. Any reasonable interpretation of the 1st
amendment would forbid any law against purely symbolic speech.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="color: black;">In the
end, though, this debate is meaningless.
This bill has been around forever, and gets reintroduced over and over
again, and is consistently defeated.
Censoring criticism of the government is so thoroughly anti-American
that it will never pass. Maybe I’m being
naïve, but I feel that no matter how bad things get, I just can’t see </span><span style="color: black;">America</span><span style="color: black;"> jailing its dissidents.</span></p>

<p>I love all the Constitutional Experts who suddenly appear on the board for topics like this. You people don't know anymore about the Constitution than the rest of us, so give it up douchebags.</p><p>My personal opinion? Let the commies burn their flags. Go ahead if it makes you feel like a freedom fighter. If it makes you feel like you're standing up for something. I am about personal freedoms, so although I think it's disgusting to burn our flag, you should have the right. </p><p>But in the future, how about you think of burning flags of countries that DON'T help other people around the world as much as us. Countries that regularly kill their own citizens. Countries that keep women opressed. Countries that never think about human rights.</p><p>Is America perfect? Of course not. But we're the best thing going today, and it just baffles me that you all don't see that. So go ahead. Burn away. I know what I believe and I know what I think of people who burn our flag.</p>

<p>And Papa Bear. I like you and have no problem with you, but I can't believe you're trying to play the victim here with your cocaine bust.</p><p></p><p>Another reason would be, as Knowledged_one said, I was "caught" with coke. Does this mean, if you do coke, but you don't get caught, it makes you more capable of voting (or being President)?</p><p></p><p>That was pathetic. You had an illegal substance on you, period. I don't like the current drug laws either, but you have to exist in our reality, not play by your own rules and then complain when reality catches up to you. You wanted to play with the big boys, you had to take some big boy consequences.</p><p>And personally, when I see what you said, it makes me think "You know what, I see what happened to him. I won't go near cocaine EVER." Sometimes, the punishment of people does deter others from trying that same path. I want to keep voting, so I won't mess with coke.</p>

That was a really good

bestow a right. If state governments so desired, they could set up a
system wherein the governor chose electors based on who had the biggest

<p>I believe noone who commits a non-violent crime should be denied the vote. As long as they have served their sentence, probation, and paid all fines, the matter should be closed. I served 2 years of probation and it was a good thing. I haven't done drugs since.</p><p>I'm not arguing this for my own benefit. In all likelihood, by the end of summer I'll be able to vote. My Application for the Restoration of Civil Rights is being processed in Governor Warner's office, as we speak. I'm speaking out for all the other non-violent felons. The process needs streemlining in VA, and even more in other states.</p>
