Recently I've been reading
up on Anarchist communities
in Spain and I am impressed
by some of the acheivements
they had. Most people will
react "Anarchism is chaos"
but the society functioned
largely as a Direct
Democracy and in the larger
communities they elected
representatives for just one
year and those
representatives didn't get
any preferential treatment.
They even put up one hell of
a fight aganist Franco.
These communities put up a
much better war effort
aganist Fascists than the
French lol. So HK do you
think Anarchism is a
feasibilty or an
impossibility?

I have no idea, but I think that "Anarchy in the UK" is one of the most covered songs by different metal bands EVER.

In the early part of the 1900's there were many radical anarchists advocating anarchy as the best means for social change. Perhaps the best known among them is Emma Goldberg.

Many other socialist of that era embraced anarchy as well (which is somewhat of a contradiction, but they looked at anarchy as a temporary state b/w capitalism and socialism, just as communists looked at socialism as a temporary state in between capitalism and communism.

William Debs and Bill Heyward were among those who flirted with anarchism for awhile. Eventually they realized that they could attract more people to their causes by endorsing a less radical approach.

Anarchy is not the same as chaos. However, in large populations, whenever a government experiments with reducing it's input and control the harder it is for anarchy to be feasable. This was seen in America during the mid and late 1800's with the laisze faire attitude adapted by the federal government. We know how that turned out. (Mass unemployment, strikes, class riots, starvation, federal soldiers needed to restore order and the like.)

Anarchy is most effective in small groups and works best in very small hunter gatherer societies.

Anarchists(at least the
serious ones) are
socialists. Bakunin said
that I as an Anarchist I am
also a
Socialist(paraphrasing). BTW
Communism is a form of
socialism not seperate from
it. Communists do not view
Socialism is an inbetween of
Capitalism and Communism.

Anarcho-Socialists(as
opposed to
Anarcho-Capitalists, better
known as Libertarians in
this country) want less
input from government but
more worker control. By this
they would want to have
worker councils deciding
what to do with their labor.
This is a far cry from the
laissez-faire attidudes of
Anarcho-Capitalists.

ADOLESCENTMASTURBATOR - Just in case my recollection of political theory had changed since I graduated cum laude with national honors in political science, I checked the quickest and most easily verifyable site for definitions, Webster's Dictionary.

SOCIALISM - "A stage of society in Marxist theory transitional between capitalism and communism and distinguished by unequal distribution of goods and pay according to work done."

Socialists work towards the goal of having the govenrment own the means of production and distribution as a method of redistributing wealth.

Anarchists are most definitely not socialists.

Rooster I'm not trying to piss people off I'm just talking about a topic that interests me.

Ok whatever the Marxian theory, Marxism is still a form of Socialism. They may view traditonal Socialism as a transitional stage but they are still Socialists. There is a reason Marxism was called Engels and Marx as Scientific Socialism.

Socialists work towards the goal of having the govenrment own the means of production and distribution as a method of redistributing wealth.

Not all of them. Anarchists are also described as Libertarian Socialists. I hardly believe Libertarian Socialists will use government as a mechanism for Socialism.

People like Chomsky, Kroptkin, Bakunin, Rocker, Proudhon. They are all Anarchists but they are also Socialists. BTW Libertarian Socialists can be modified to believe that Government is worthwhile if its only purpose is to serve the people.
