I have a firewire card that is 5 years old that I used on my last two computers. Last week the thing crapped out on me, so I bought a new one. This morning I was installing the new one, so I unplugged the power source to the card and pulled the old card from the PCI slot. Then I installed the new card in the slot and was about to reconnect the power source to the card, when I realized -- no separate power source needed!

My question is this:

Have firewire cards just gotten better in the last five years, so a separate power source is no longer needed, or did I buy an inferior card this time, or do some cards just have a separate power source and some do not (without there being a big difference)?
