<p> </p><p>I want to get a Laptop for basic computing, surfing and perhaps to play a DVD once in a while if im on the road. Everyone tells me "oh i saw deal for $499 or $ 599 etc..."</p><p>But what people dont understand is that when you go to DELL and try to configure a laptop, IT COMES WITHOUT a service contract and any SOFTWARE. </p><p>So when you add a 3 yr contract ($ 300) and Word/Excell/PowerPoint/Outlook ($300) the system is $1,200 and thats before upgrading memory, RAM or getting a decent screen!!!!!</p><p>I configured 2 systems, an Inspiron 6000 and Inspiron D505 and they both started well under a 1000 and ended at around 1600..with the most BASIC add ons. I didnt add any options like DVD-RW or anything else.</p><p>Is this what im expected to pay for a decent Laptop?</p><p>ps - i chose DELL because of reviews at pcmag and pcworld.com</p><p> </p>

<p>Electronics and AV gear is famous for having tons of "hidden fees". The basic rule of thumb is, find one you want, look at the price, and double it. Usually, that rule is for RENTALS but, it pretty much applies to SALES as well.</p>

Remember, buying a Mac ensures you that surfing the web won't give your computer cancer. It also has "Acquisition", which is considered by many the best file-sharing program available, and it's Mac only. If you intend to play PC games on your laptop, then maybe stick with the PC. But if gaming is not a concern, go with the Mac.

I just bought Dell Laptop not yet a month ago. Yes, that's what you'll pay (at least I did). I got a Dell Inspiron 9300. It was supposed to be about 1200, but I just said fuck it and upgraded the shit out of it and it came to about 2200.
