I don't hate Columbus, but I don't think that he should have a holiday anyway...especially considering that it only came about for political reasons anyway.

I actually got off from work this year for the first time since high school. They hosed us on a day last January so had to make up for it and they picked Columbus Day.

I've been hollering for years about replacing columbus day with ELECTION DAY as a national holiday. Poll after poll shows that having to work is the primary reason people give for not voting. If everyone who has national holidays off, got election day off, turnout would no doubt increase. And, its certainly a more significant American Holiday that Columbus Day.
