I recently added a second internal drive to my computer. The second drive is a 160Gb IDE drive with (I believe, but I'm not sure how to check) 8 Mb buffer (for what it's worth, my master drive is also an IDE drive). I have been trying to do some video capture from my digital video camera through the firewire connection. Unfortunately, when I try to get the captured video to save directly to my new slave drive, I get the following error message:

Sorry, cannot capture

The data rate on drive F: is less than the required data rate of 4444 Kb/second

My workaround has been to capture onto the master drive and moving the captured video to the slave drive when I start to run out of space on the master. The only problem is that when I attempt to playback the video saved on the slave drive through Pinnacle Studio 8, it's very choppy. It also plays choppy through media players.

Is there any way to speed up the connection to the slave drive? Do I need to buy a new drive for the slave position? If so, what was my mistake in my last purchase.

Mikey, here is what the problem may be and then a fix.

If the drive is 5400RPM (usually cheaper than a 7200RPM version with the same space), it may not be able to handle the speed of the transfer.

Also, if you have them set up as master slave on the same IDE cable, this can be a problem.

Workaround - buy a PCI- IDE card. Its a stand-alone card that will allow you to plug the new drive into it. It uses the PCI bus, which is rated at 133MB per second. Make sure the card (and the hard drive for that matter) is ATA100.

My guess would be the total speed of the 2 drives together is not allowing enough bandwidth to get to the slave drive

Thanks to Reef for my sig. You rock

Also, if you have them set up as master slave on the same IDE cable, this can be a problem.

I would agree with this. But before buying a PCI IDE card, see if you can make use of the second IDE bus on your motherboard. Nearly every motherboard has two IDE buses; each bus supports one master and one slave device. If you have two hard drives, try making each one a master on each bus. (Keep your C drive on the lowest numbered bus, usually IDE 0.) You can make your optical drive(s) like your CD and/or DVD drives the slaves. Each device can be configured as master or slave via a jumper. Look for a sticker on each device for jumper settings.

I hope this is helpful.

Michael Keen
