Oh. I was thinking about that school janitor that the community burned to death in the school boiler. Now none of the kids want to go to sleep anymore.

these shelters are ridiculous. i work in jersey city in a real bad area, every so often we get a dog in the yard that has either had the shit beat out of him, or in real rough shape. and there are 2 shelter, 1 across the street from where i work and 1 about 2 blocks away. 2 times i took one of these dogs to the shelter and they try to guilt you into taking the dog home and taking care of it. the one place actually refused to take the dog because it had been there earlier in the week and someone apparently took it and let it loose or whatever. and the people working there are giving me the guilt trip that nobody loves the dog and why can't i take it. i left the dog in front of the place. i felt bad but i've had nothing but bad experience in these places.

i worked in what i always hoped was one of the worse animal hospitals/shelters in the city. Essentially as a 17 year old who had only about 20 hours and a month of work experience (i was volunteering there for 5 hours every Sunday for school) i knew more about working there than one of the "veterianary technicians" that had worked there full time for 3 years. He really had no fucking idea about how to react towards animals and had little to no instinct when it came to actually knowing how the fuck to deal with them (its hard to explain other than just saying that he lacked instinct). The main vet that ran the place was also a complete bastard towards people and animals.

The thing about 70% of animals being put down was also very true at this place. Nearly every animal that was ever brought in that was even close to serious sickness was put to sleep. Almost every animal that was brought in was put to sleep (lets say 90%). And really it was completely avoidable because the guy changed the place from strictly an animal shelter to one where people could keep their dogs and cats when they went on vacation (or just decided to bounce on them) when it was obvious that would mean we couldn't keep nearly as many strays.

Also, it just occured to me a few months ago that a teenager was doing surgery on animals. Like younger than me. And i'm not saying it was very serious surgery but he was performing procedures that involved dog's eyes and shit like that. The kid was smart so I guess it never really occured to me that it was really fucked up that because one of the vets was eating lunch that he was doing surgery. Creepy.

Wadd, every animal that goes through the NYC shelter system (and every
other shelter system I know of) gets spayed/neutered. And they still
have to kill thousands a year.
Second, if you read my post you might have understood that I took the dog there to be helped. I'm sorry you think it may have been my responsibility to take this dog home and take care of it, for no other reason besides that it showed up where i work, but no. The point of my post is that the people that work at these places don't want to take these dogs in because it is a hassle for them. They should just do their job and not lay a guilt trip on everyone that walks in there. Yeah i feel bad because i know the dog probably won't make it out of there, but i'd rather it die by injection than get creamed by a car. Or put into a dogfight.
