This movie kicked ass. Some serious shit goes down.

It was SUPPOSED to be a earth-gets-attacked-by-aliens movie and that's EXACTLY what it is. The death toll is in the billions.

There is no super-fast editing and there a few good scenes where there is NO music . Very effective.

For the people who hate this movie, I suspect this is one of those times that people are faulting a movie for being exactly what it's SUPPOSED to be.

This movie is SUPPOSED to be about a ruthless alien attack that nearly wipes out the human race...but doesnt. That's EXACTLY what it is. They come, they kick ass, people try to escape, they can't..so they run away, but the aliens keep on coming. Bam. That's it. That's what the movie promises and that's what it delivers.

In fact, I think this movie is waaay better than just about any summer blockbuster I can think of because it's UNLIKE every other disaster movie. None of the usual plot devices.

They never assemble a team of experts in various military and scientific fields to "think outside the box, damn it!"

There is no secret government weapon

There is no love story,

There is (almost) no humor,

There is no huge battle scene (it all happens off camera)

We never learn anything that Tom Cruise doesn't learn. We know what he knows..and that's it.

All we see is people getting killed by aliens...or by each other. I honestly don't understand how that is NOT exciting enough for some people. This ain't Shawshank Redemption folks. Nor is it trying to be,

If this movie doesn't do it for ya....stay home next time. You're numb.

haven't seen this yet, but from what I'm hearing its just Signs closer
to the action. We follow a family just trying to survive an apocalypse.
Both have the aliens nearly destroy the world. Both are incredibly
intense in the middle. Both have ridiculous endings. Both have the
aliens being destroyed by something so simple and elemental that just
the fact that the they didn't think of that destorys the whole premise
that they are highly advanced civlizations capable of planetary
destruction.

I

You should spoil the ending. And I'm not talking
about the ending everyone already knows. I'm talking about the sappy,
incredulous OTHER part of the ending. I'm glad I heard about that
already, at least I'll be prepared, maybe I'll be able to hold in my

They're different, but they are depicting the
same thing from two different perspectives. Depicting it from the
outskirts like Signs did was fairly unique and innovative. I really did
like Signs a lot, if the ending wasn't so incomprehensible it mgiht
have made my top 10 of all time.

I really did appreciate the slow, methodical way Signs built up the
tension and dread. It made it all the more scary and thrilling when the
shit went down. WOTW is just immediate non-stop action from what I
heard, which could make it a hell of a summer event movie and an
adrenaline rush, but I doubt I'll experience the same fear that I did
in Signs.

And every alien invasion movie is a rip-off of War of the Worlds.
But that doesn't mean this remake can retroactively claim that all
those movies are ripping it off. Not that Signs didn't rip shit off,
though. That Blair Witch Project scene just hits you straight in the
forehead.

No, I'm referring to two things that happened in
the ending. The one in the book is thereal "ending". What I was talking about
was something else that happened at the end: when Cruise's son turns out to be alive out of nowhere.

[color=navy]Maybe
I just heard it wrong, but that's what I've been hearing that people

there was a few problems i found with the movie. spolier alert in white text

One was mentioned already in what made their shields go down, they never tell you. Maybe they were all connected like a computer network and when tom leaves the grenades inside it shuts them all down.

Second was and only new yorkers would realize it but in the book/original movie it takes place in New Jersey and it looks like they set it in jersey in this version as well. what bothers me is that if it is set in jersey how did he get to the west shore expressway (which is on Staten Island) without crossing a bridge? the one outside his house looks like the bayonne bridge, and that gets destroyed.

also the convenience of all the cars on the roads were perfectly stopped in a way that he could still drive around them, and also when he comes out of the house and the plane is on the ground and everything around is destroyed yet the minivan is not damaged and all the debris is once again conveniently placed in such a way that he can still drive around them. now i know it is a movie and you have to suspend reality but its hard to believe that these 2 conveniences would really happen in a real life attack.

the one good thing they did do was not make the characters automatically assume it was aliens. In a post 9-11 world their first thought of terrorists attacking them, would make more sense then out of nowhere assuming it was aliens.

I just got home from seeing this movie......visually I was impressed,
plot-wise I was unimpressed. Everything you guys mention in the white

better as a 19th century book than a 21st century movie.

i'm happy there are more haters out there than me. so i'm not alone on this one. fezident, i don;t know if you're really katie holmes or what but whatever you try to explain to me isn;t gonna work. to me, this movie wasn't good at all. everytime i think about it i just get more pissed about how bad it was. i agree with HHH saying visually it was impressive. i just thought everything around it wasn't done well. such as... what was the point of the red vines...i know what they were but why were they there.

when the aliens showed up it blew every piece of machinery/cars/all sorts of electronics. yet somehow that guy is filming the whole thing on a camcorder.

as for cougarjake, they really didn't say where they were exactly. his house is on first and kennedy boulevard in bayonne, yet when he walked up the block to look for his car he was in newark. ny/nj people will notice this but nobody outside this area will know the difference.

Oh well. To each his own, I suppose.

I literally JUST got back from seeing it a second time and BOTH times, there was applause after it ended. And yet...word-of-mouth appears to be bad so, I dunno what the hell is going on.

As for the nitpicky stuff. EVERY movie has that stuff. NJ..NY..Bayonne...Newark...whatever. Nobody ever really notices that kinda thing unless you're from that particular town. And even THEN, it doesn't really matter. They scout for cool locations...not continuity.

The camcorder thing struck me as odd both times I saw it. I think they established that battery operated devices could still function as there were quite a few flashlights later in the movie. (and the minivan was instantly drivable once they fixed the solanoids or whatever the hell it was)

My love for this movie really stems from all the action & danger. And that it doesn't have all the usual plot devices of a normal movie. We NEVER leave Tom Cruises P.O.V. I found that pretty interesting.

Any way you slice it...it's better than ARMAGGEDDON, THE CORE, TWISTER, etc etc. No??
"WHATEVER YOU DO....DON'T CROSS THE STREAMS!!"

Just saw WOTW and I liked it. The ending wasn't great but visually the movie was very impressive.

I
appreciate that there wasn't a forced love story or corny comedy. it
was kept simple: aliens invaded, kicked our ass, then got beat. Simple.
And I also liked that Speilberg revealed the tripods early on and the
aliens halfway through, he didn't drag it on the whole flick just for a
big reveal.
I have one major complaint, only one small segment showing the aliens. i would have loved to more of the actual aliens. Visually, the movie has great special effects, but the ending is weak. I'd give it a solid B.

The shields went down because the aliens were drinking the humans - and getting sick. They were dying.

I liked the movie. I'd probably give it a B+ and the f/x were worth the price of admission.

The one thing that bothered me: Haven't we seen those aliens before?

White text: They looked like the ones from Independence Day

I loved the movie! Spielberg did a great job directing and it had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. It really reminded me of some of his older blockbusters like Jaws and Jurassic Park. I don't think it will hold up and I have a feeling that I wouldn't enjoy it as much the second time around but it was a great movie and well worth the $10.75 I paid for admission.

The one thing that really shocked me was that the scene at the end that was supposed to take place on a quiet residential street in Boston was actually filmed on my block in Brooklyn, NY. They filmed it so long ago that I forgot it was in the movie.

Finally saw it and thought it was pretty good. it was a film filled
with tense moments and scary shit. I feel so wierd watching so many
people get wiped out in the blink of an eye. I know its only a movie
but it touched me and I felt bad for the human race.

Everyone who hated it will probably like it better when it
becomes a Documentary soon. I'll be hiding deep in the Artic Tundra if
anyone needs me.

There was a scene in the movie that I didn't quite understand the first two times I saw it. I was watching the DVD today and it STILL didn't make sense to me.

At the end of the movie...Tom is trying to convey SOMETHING to a nearby soldier. I don't know what he's saying but, he's screaming and pointing at the birds in the sky.

Is it possible that he noticed that birds were able to land directly on the machines (which would indicate that the shields were down)? Was he yelling at the soldier to fire away?

The dialog is REALLY buried in the mix at that point in the film. Anyone know what the hell is going on there?
