"It's true they're not eager to bury themselves in a cubicle and take orders from bosses for the next 40 years, and why should they?" asks Jeffrey Arnett, a University of Maryland psychologist who's written a book on "emerging adulthood," the period between age 18 and 25. "They have a healthy skepticism of the commitment their employers have to them and the commitment they owe to their employers."

Many young people also want to avoid becoming just another cog who works for a faceless giant.

Anthony DeBetta, a 23-year-old New Yorker, works with other twentysomethings at a small marketing firm — and says the company's size makes him feel like he can make a difference.

"We have a vested interest in the growth of this firm," he says.

If they can't understand what I listed from the article above, I laugh at their hipocracy! It seems they've truly become worse than their parents, as today corporations are way bigger than during their "quarter-life crisis". At least we didn't dress like a bunch of idiots and annoy everyone.

As to the stuff about 20 something being slackers, having trouble
transitioning from school to work, I read that when I was 15, 25 and
35. And i expect to read it again for every other 10 year period I'm
alive.

And each time its presented as "new" and "increasing problem"

I'm firmly under the belief that "Great Generations" alternate.

Greatest Generation was awesome.
Baby Boomers can suck my cock.
Generation X is good so far.
Generation Y are the biggest bunch of momma's boys I've ever met.
I pray for Generation Z to be better than Y.

Step up and take responsibility for yourself and stop blaming the fucking "generations" for your lame-ass shortcomings and what you don't have and what hasn't been done for you. Gimme a fucking break. a non-topic.

I so stand by what I said about the "generations". As I said, personal responsibility is what matters, that was my message. If you dismiss that, cool for you. I have been flamed and in fact attacked for what I said. Whatever. But I will say this: absolutely no substance was offered in response. And I add, once again, given all the other crap, that is quite lame.

I'm not completely sure what point you are trying to make, but the whole "this generation," "Kids these days with their Diet Sodas and Marijuana," and (my personal favorite) "the pussification of the American male" has been going on since before the war.

Do you really think the Baby Boomers ruined everything?

I don't see Gen. X and Gen. Y as alternating generations. They're like half generations of one another. Plus, the whole "generation" thing is really fuzzy. I have a lot of the characteristics attributed to people of generation X and a lot from generation Y. I guess that's what I get for being born in the Early 80's.

America went from its zenith as an empire to now being a bit player capable of nothing more than mass consumerism under their stewardship

given the reckless and completely untenable lifestyle that was championed by them yea i'd say they ruined everything

but hey at least we have sweet suburbs so we don't have to live near the brown people

woops there's one, have to move another 40 miles away from work

Consumerism isn't the problem. The problem is the elimination of labor jobs that provide a fair living wage. We have two generations of Americans who have been expected to get an eduction, whether they have the intelligence or interest in education or not. This will result in an increase in poverty and crime (mostly in lower income areas). This is a problem created by selfish, greedy corporation and aggrivated by overly-relaxed governmental regulation.

This, however, is not a new problem. Charles Dickens and Upton Sinclair wrote fictional satires about these problems over 100 years ago.

But the news media will always take the side of business. The right-leaning alleged left-leaning media can't wait to create phony majority groups (like soccer moms), unimportant issues (like offensive content on TV affecting your children) or under-important issues (like gay marriage or Craig's List prostitution) to distract God-fearing people from issues that matter.

I'm interested in learning something from the people on this thread:

1) What worked before?

2) What is broken, now?
