If you live in New York City, is there any sense in having a car?

I live in Brooklyn and just got rid of an old Honda Accord that I had for a number of years. It was a great car and I loved driving it, even through the city. It gave me a sense of freedom and I almost feel claustrophobic without it. There's just something about NOT having that option that makes you realize how much you value your car.

At the same time, having a car in New York is nothing but a constant headache. Over the last three years of the car, I've had to deal with 2 breakins, 1 pair of headlights stolen, and all 4 hub caps stolen. I probably accumulated over $2,000 worth of parking tickets, meter fees, toll receipts, and garage bills. I put $700 into maintainence and repairs. I spent a fortune on gas. I had to constantly worry about alternate side of the street parking. And I probably wasted entire weeks of my life sitting in traffic.

Should I even bother. I miss having a car but I can't decide whether it's worth it or not. Any advice out there?

no. if you live in NYC thats why they have trains. think about the cash you'll save on a car payment (unless its paid for) and if it IS paid for and its a hunk of shit, donate it somewhere and use it as a tax write off.

He said he already got rid of it, so he can't donate it. But I mean living in an urban area is great for having everything you need right there. It's just harder for you to leave the area now. But if you're a city person and you live and exist there constantly, fuck the car.
