I got it... honestly, the main reason was because I was banking on the fact that Ron and Fez will be making the jump. Honestly, I like it a lot. I think there are some issues with it.... for example, I love brit-pop and I can't find a good station for that. Still, I think it's all what you make of it... bottom line is that it's ALWAYS better than radio.

O and A kick ass too... although they could use a little variety on that station (202).

Like I said, I think it's worth the investment. No matter what you're into, there's something there.

I have XM in my car and in my house, i paid $80 for both radios and all the equipment needed to listen to both in the car and in the house. the thing i was worried about before i bought it was that it would be difficult to install and take up alot of space in the car but its the exact opposite, i installed it very cleanly and it's not very visible.

the programming on XM is awesome, i signed up for O and A but i find myself listening to music more and more. no commercials is the main advantage, its just song after song of any type of music you like plus you'll hear good songs that commercial radio will never play. i know alot of poeple are gonna talk about the cost, its 13$ a month. obviously if youre on a very tight budget its not a good investment but its not that much compared to what you pay for your cell phone or your cable which most people have these days.

FYI i'm not a stockholder i just love XM!

I have been a member of XM since DEC 03 and I barely listen to commercil radio anymore.

When I jump into my car for a quick run to the store or post office I may leave my MYFI in the office and listen to Q104.3(NY) or 105.5 WDHA(NJ). But even that's for like 10 minutes a week...IF THAT.

CAN ANYONE HELP ME EDIT MY AVATAR!!!!

IT STINKS

I've been a card-carring member of the XM Nation since late 2001, early 2002.. I love it

and wouldn't be without it.. I definitly had it before O&A said they were coming back.

I've got the MyFi that I use in the car, and at work, since you just pull it out of the cradle,

and pop it into the other cradle, or plug in the AC adapter. They've got some great programming.

I generally listen to 41 the boneyard, used to listen to 42 before they made it web only,

and 152 for the talk radio like the Monsters, PhillipsPhile. 77 is pretty tripp, 101 its interesting

as well.

To tell the truth, the only thing missing from XM, happens ot be on Sirius..

Martha Stewart... ugh.... just kidding, I cant stand her on the radio, or TV for

that matter... I think the only way I can stomic her, is in those underground Am. Porn

movies that are floating around..

For those who have XM, I hope to get it soon (take advantage of the roady2 sales), and I may not have enough to pay for the year up front.

here' my situation:

I figure I may have about $210-$220 freed up to play with:

Target has an online deal for the roady2 with home kit for $89 (if you know a better deal for this, please let me know via email/pm)

That leaves me with about 120-130 left (just not enough to pay for the full year deal). Am I able to just take that money and use that right at the bat for my subscription (would cover the first 8 or 9 months, give or take a month), and down the road pay another chunk to stay ahead of the subscription. This sounds weird, but I'd rather have a "buffer zone" in case I forget to pay a bill or can't afford it that month and stil be all good. Sounds stupid I know, but I know people who have done this with their cable bills,

Have it, love it; cements home the fact that regular radio is now officially in the Stone Age, def in terms of audio quality, and the spot load is so little, as to make regular radio even more un-listenable then it was.

Hbox and I are probably the biggest shills of XM around here, so here goes.

I am a huge radiophile, and in the car, I've all but stopped listening to regular radio outside of the stations I absolutely can't listen to on XM, which is WFAN and 101.5 - which, ironically, are the types of stations that will hold the line against satellite radio and do not have to adapt when it comes to the onslaught. REAL local radio - the small market stations - will do a lot better against satellite than the large market juggernauts. (I know WFAN is a large market juggernaut, but they have a real local feel. So does 101.5)

Jack is a ridiculously stupid concept that will die a quick death as Satellite becomes more popular.

WPLJ is done much better on XM (Mix)

Z-100 is done much better on XM (KISS)

Q1043 is done much better on XM (Deep Tracks and Top Tracks)

Etc. etc.

Your XM experience will vary on the type of unit you buy. I had a Roady2, and that's a good "starter" unit - but now with my MyFi, it's so much easier to "scan around the dial" to see what's on. I've been experiencing new channels because of the MyFi's ease of use, and my XM enjoyment level has skyrocketed to near orgasmic.

Feel free to PM me with any questions you have, but XM rules.

I got XM last year and I have to admit I was completely skeptical but it is like having cable TV but for radio less commercials and a lot of content. O&A never sounded better and the fact they could go on with a bit for 90+ minutes and the only reason they break is to pee and get coffee make the show that much greater. I agree content on the station leaves much to be desired and we are all waiting for the arrival of Ron and Fez. I still highly recommend it. 200 stations for 10 bucks. Its a better investment than an Ipod.

Also that british pop station is U-POP (58).
In the end it doesn't even matter...

There was no better example for the potential of
satellite radio as a concept and the strengths of XM in particular than
the coverage of Live 8 this weekend. 6 stations dedicated to covering
each concert uncut, along with one channel that basically jumped around
to the best performances. If there was something you were looking
forward to, the "best of" channel told you it was starting and which
channel it was on, and you could switch over and listen to the whole
thing. And each channel had DJs interviewing people between sets and
such. They did a great job.
I have had XM since Opie and Anthony moved to it. I enjoy it far more than regular radio. I barely listen to regular radio except for getting traffic reports off of 1010 WINS and 880.

Best way I could put it is if O&A left XM or R&F don't come to XM I would still keep the service. I got it for those reasons, though I quickly saw how great XM overall is.

For those who listen to O&A I have some of the same issues that Opie has with some of the channels playing too much obscure music, though it's not as big a deal for me. I really like diverse music and this fits very well. I don't listen to my iPod in the car nearly as much as I used to since getting XM.

I don't listen to radio in my room or car enough to bother getting an XM unit. When I do listen to music, I have lots of it on my iPod. I don't need XM to expose me to new music.

But if Ron and Fez finally get around to jumping to XM, I'll probably buy the online only subscription to hear them and O&A.

And they since they have a channel for every other type of music, they better get their shit together and get a REAL Heavy station on there. When they removed liquid metal from the units and only for the online users i was pissed. But next time you are on you can tune in XM42 for some pretty heavy stuff. The online version of XM has more compression on it than the satelite feed so if your looking for decent sound quality music, and the online version is not that bad, it would be worth it to get the unit and sub since you get the online version free when you sub now.

That's another attraction to XM to me, getting ot hear more than jsut
teh 10 same songs. I dont' see a problem with hearing
obscure/rare songs, how often does Krock now goes beyond the same songs
in a cycle? I want variety and no commercials on top of it sold
me on Xm...that and O&A, and most likely R&F

I'm in the car stereo business, so XM gave me the equipment I needed (Alpine TUA-T020XM) just prior to their launch on the East Coast and a MyFi during that product's launch, so I've been onboard since the beginning. As far as the XM v. AM/FM arguement goes, it's not even close. I have not listened to one second of FM since I got XM. It's painful to me to even turn that crap on, in fact I just bought a new car and the factory radio has never been tuned past 87.9. I love having O&A, but I'm also a big fan of 41(Boneyard) 42(The deceased Liquid Metal) 48(Squizz) and the decades channels. Just get it, there's no turning back once you do.

I was already sick of commercial radio in 1998 when I first heard O&A. I had given up on FM almost entirely, only checking a few stations (and usually being disappointed) during WFAN's 10+ minute commercial breaks. Once I stumbled upon O&A, I was done with everything but WNEW, especially once I got a taste of Ron & Fez.

After WNEW flipped format I went back to WFAN a bit, but got more & more disgusted with the whole 5-minutes-of-talk-10-minutes-of-commercials format of it. Then I bought a head unit for the car that would play mp3 discs so I didn't have to keep my entire music collection in the car.

Since I got XM, I couldn't be happier with the service & the options. O&A all day, uncut comedy, tons of commercial-free music including Eddie Trunk on Saturday nights, EVERY baseball game being played EVERYDAY (as well as out of town announcers that I would never get to hear normally), and hopefully there will be a Ron & Fez sighting soon! And there's lots of talk stations and local weather & traffic (if you're someone who needs that kind of thing & relies on local AM & FM for it) that I haven't even gotten to in almost a year. How could you go wrong for a few bucks per month?

I got XM specifically for O&A. When they first went to XM I had heard about the MyFi, so I held off (which was torture) until the MyFi came out.

Anyhow, I did have some reservations about paying for radio, but O&A definitley made it worth it, and as time passes, you'll realize that you can't live without it. I think he knows what he's missing, trust me.

That is pretty much exactly how I've always felt about Radio. It either plays the hits or old hits and it's less that 1% of the music I enjoy everyday. I don't need some stations playing me shit for me to find stuff I like, I find it on my own a lot of the time. I talk to people about music. I may even take a tip from some of you and at least check out a track or two from artists you've raved about.

If you're using XM to find new artists, great. But I already know I don't like COuntry, I don't like Bluegrass, I don't like most punk, I don't like SKA, I don't want to hear Emo Metal, I don't want a 70's station because we have stations that play that stuff for free in NYC, I don't like Hair Metal which is what they play too much of on Boneyard, I don't like Pop, etc. So I'd listen to O&A, some classical from time to time, maybe news, The BOneyard in hopes the play something I already have on CD and that's it. I won't drop 200 bucks for that, period.

I've always said: Why wait for the Radio to play something good when I can just own it and play it myself whenever I'm in the mood. Radio's only good point is musical background noise in yoru workplace.

But as I said, I will get the online access if Ron and Fez move there.

i've had XM since last summer and love it... i used to have a skyfi but recently got a MyFi. i love it... i love the tune select feature on it... save up to 20 artist or song titles. then when they show up on another station the unit beeps and lets you know on the screen. i love driving and seeing one of my favorite artists pop up on another channel, hit a button and jump over to hear the song. wonderful.

Like Mojo, I have a pretty large music collection, and my tastes vary wildly. I have yet to find a station that will play something better than my laptop or an Ipod playing on shuffle.
maybe if the thread was started with a question like "should i get XM?" then i would agree with you(mikeyboy). but the person asked who has it and what do you like about it. not to tell them about how you get your own music and why you don't need it. again, if you don't want it, thats fine. i'm not promoting anyone to get it. in fact i mentioned above i hate the music channels and listen only for O&A. but for someone looking for opinions on the XM product i don't see the point of someone mentioning how much good music is on their IPOD and they have no need for XM...who is that helping? the person was probably thinking of buying XM and wanted a few opinions on it...i'm sure they are fully aware of the benefits of the IPOD or other similar products.
thanks for the sig SatCam...and thanks for bringing it back Furie

No one is able to restrict who can offer their opinions in a thread, even if they are the ones starting the thread. If people can offer legitimate reasons why someone might not want/need XM, I see nothing wrong with that. It's just silly.

I have been contemplating buying an XM unit and sub, mostly due to
an AFRO reunion. I might, but I was in this place called the RCS
experience the other day (where OnA had there most recent in store) cuz
I work right near there...and the portable units are, dare I say..big
and ugly.

It's funny, OnA diss the doggie company's dashboard
units for being so obtrusive and such, but the myfi's and the other
models are really big and clunky in that same respect. I'd feel a lot
better getting one which was comparable to the size of my Mp3 player.
(iRiver IHP 120. Which kicks all sorts of ass in ways the iPod NEVER
will.) In fact, they have remotes which are almost as big as the actual
units...yeech.

About 3 out of about 20 people answered the question "Who has XM?"
by saying they (we - the usual suspects) didn't have XM and why,
and one of them was bashed pretty hard for not being that informed.
What makes this different (with "the haters") from other times is the consessions for
R&F with the internet streaming. HELL! I even said that I MIGHT actually
get it after all that! Jeeeez.

Still not sure why there is
defensiveness about it - XM is clearly at an advantage over Sirius, and
everyone I know who has it loves it more than their children. It's like
being in control over all three branches of government and still upset
there are democrats around...ok....maybe it's nothing like that.

Personally, I'm just amused that the two people with the most posts on rf.net aren't getting XM.

Plug
XM all day and night long for all I care - I would love for it to
succeed and prosper. I have my concerns that the same 5 companies that
own everything else will eventually team up with the government to ruin
it too (although that hasn't happened yet w/ the internet, so there's
always that), and I wonder how long too companies can last in the
marketplace, and I personally will miss local radio (I'm old enough
that I remember something called "local television"), but (as I said
earlier) I'm sure that if I had I would love it. I am just not in a
mindset, nor in a financial set, right not to make that choice.

But
that can change very quickly - things do - this time last month I
didn't have a Canon GL2, an Imac G5 with final cut pro or a new car. Of
course, this time last month I had a perfectly good old car and a 19
year old cat. ehhhh

There is a limit to how small you can shrink the units. The MyFi isnt really all that big,

when you look at the thing, the screen is one of the biggest feature. You could have something

the size of Apple's Shuffle, or Sony's (I think it's sony), PocketLint.. but you have no screen,

no battery to speak of, very little controls, no 5 hrs recording time, oh, and dont forget since

it's soo small, you know need some external antenna to pull in your signal. The recording

feature is pretty sweet, not sure if you've had the chance to play with it. Not only does it

encode the stream for the alotted time, but it's keeping track of what's being recorded,

such as song title and artiest, start and stop times of the songs, and various other metrics

that, while your playing back the recordings, you can move the thumbwheel/remote keys

and see the song list, whats playing, whats coming up, skip ahead, skip backwards it's

really pretty impressive. I found this out on accident after recording some shows off

of TheBoneYard, and was out mowing my lawn, and happen to hit the button and

up pops the list.

There's alot going on inside a MyFi, or other receiver such as the Roadie2, such as

buffer circuitry that normal MP3 players don't have, antenna diversity circuitry that

not only receivers signal from the two satellites, but also monitors and uses signals

from terrestrial based repeaters. These buffersand repeaters were part of the key to providing

seemless reception in big cities and other areas where the footprint of the satellite was

interrupted by tall buildings and/or other obstructions. The codecs used aren't MP3, MP3pro, but are

AAC, and some channels are testing AAC+ if not the newer generation of that. I've

been messing with these for my internet stream, because you can send out a 24k or 48k

or higher stream, and have it sound like a 64k or 128 or higher. Way more range

than MP3pro, but at the moment there are few commercial providers that run servers/relay

servers that utilize the AAC/etc codecs, and the ones that do, charge an arm and a leg,

plus the codec itself isn't publicly available like others. Getting the codec at the moment

is a rather large chunk of change.. Damn.. sorry, got off on a tanget there...

I think the point I was making is, sure the MyFi and other XM receivers may

be larger than your normal MP3 player, and sure it would be nice to have it

smaller, but there's alot of things going on there. Don't forget the MyFi

is the 1st generation portable for XM and it has way more features than

Sirius's first gen portables, who can't record on the fly, and so on...

Yeah Twister, I'm aware of all the things going on inside the
casing, and can appreciate that. All I'm saying is that you and i KNOW,
that in the future, they'll be smaller. Why not just save us all some
grief and make them smaller now. Heh. (smiley face) Unfortunately, the
store didn't have any of the portable units set up to play with, so I
wasn't able to really get a feel for using it. I was only able to hold
it, and shit man, I wouldn't want to clip that damned thing to my
pants, as it would probably pull them down !

(my
point is that if you're calling something portable, it should fit in
your shirt pocket, and pants pocket. Their units are heavy and bulky,
and will pull and tug your shirt, if not rip the pockets. Not my idea
of portable is all I'm sayin)

I can
understand having the big screen for home use, but the remote should be
an lcd bluetooth wireless so that you can keep the unit in a bag while
you're travelling IMO. Seriously man, you can beat someone over the
head to death with those portables. Big ass batterry and all.

I have both XM and TIVO/DVR and can't imagine living without them. As I read the comments opposed to these technologies I am reminded of being a little kid when every movie theater had a "Fight Pay TV" lettering on their marquees. No one will pay for what they can get for free went the argument. It's not fair to make people pay...on and on. Well we seem to have survived the fight and most people now view cable as just another utility.

I suspect the same thing will happen with satellite radio. People will be willing to pay a fee to hear what they want. The ability to listen to Bluegrass or Heavy Metal at the touch of a button is phenomenal. At the same time I have never met a person who switched to TIVO/DVR and went back to the old cable box. It's just not the same.

....later we can discuss the social implications

Count me in as the "have it, love it" group. I got it because I was
tired of my local ESPN Radio affiliate make me listen to Norfolk Tides
AAA baseball games on the only two sports radio stations in town!!!
When i found out that O&A were coming back and were going to be on
XM...wooooooooooooo boy was I happy. Now Ron & Fez are likely being
added to the team??? Sheesh...I'll tell you this...they are about the
only show you could add to High Voltage (XM 202) that I'd not be mad
for having to effort to hear O&A at whatever replay times they
leave open.

I'm not too crazy with my Roadie2 at the moment. I'm on my second
one. XM programming is great but w/o a player it's not so
good. The first one gave in and Delphi replaced is abt 6 months

The Roady2 is not exactly portable according to XM411.com. If you
do move it from place to place do it carefully. Pffft!

I think the main reason (and this isn't a slam on Sirius), is that Sirius's technology is far behind that of XM's that I don't know if the two techologies could work in one receiver. It would be great if it were out there and a listerner could decide which one or both that they wanted to subscribe to, though I don't think it's out there yet.
