The time has come for a new vehicle. My Jeep Cherokee has served me well, but it's only a 2 door and I find an increasing need for 4 doors.

My requirements are simple; plenty of cargo room, 4 wheel drive, and as previously stated, 4 doors.

The space behind the rear seats must be large enough to haul my amplifier and guitars for gigs, and my tackle box and rods for fishing, as well as camping gear.

My entire family (and several friends) live in the mountains of Vermont where every Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter I am met with a snowstorm. 4x4 is a must.

Anybody have an SUV they're real happy with and would recommend?

Volvo V70 XC.
I can fit more stuff in it than I can in my jeep, it has more ground clearance than a Ford Explorer, 4WD, and much better gas mileage than an SUV. Seriously, might be a little soccer momish, but it will do what it sounds like you want it to do, and better than an SUV.

What TC and Snoogans said. SUV's are for suckers these days. Unless you wanna shell out for one of the new hybrid versions. TC's reccomendation is easily the best if you need to haul a lot of stuff around frequently and not have to sell blood to pay for gas.

But seriously, to back up what Snoogans said, my family has 3 Subaru Wagons and they're very satisfied with the gas milage, price, durability and storage space. Check them out.

My whole problem with buying an SUV in order to actually haul stuff / go off roading is that its fucking 40,000 dollars! No one would take a new BMW or Audi and do the same. for some reason, just because it has 4wd, people seem to care less about it, when it is still a massive amount of money.

How bad is your jeep that you want to get rid of it. I use this logic with my current car: even if it costs me 1200 a year to keep it on the road (its a 1996 4wd blazer), thats still only 100 bucks a month. you can not get anything for that much money. i do not feel bad when i throw stuff in the back, and i never worry about where I park it at a store. just the piece of mind is worth it. i keep it clean and it looks nice, just not new.

Since for you it is more of a space issue, would you consider buying something coming off a lease? or maybe 4 years old from a private seller? i have no clue what your financial situation is like.

If i had to get something new, i would look into the trail blazer (but i do not think the seats fold flat anymore) or the new 4-runner.

Love my 1995 Volvo wagon. 181K miles. Volvo has a high cost
of ownership though. Take your typical brake job for
example. One in which the rotors are scored slightly (not
destroyed) and the pads are worn down. IMO, the rotors could be
cut and reinstalled. Volvo always says they are out of
tolerance. So every time you're in that situation, it's a new set
of rotors and pads. ~$450 plus labor. It's hard to argue
about brakes though, you sort of need them.
There's no using aftermarket products for the most part either. They usually cause problems.
I use it to haul shit to the dump and whatever else. Still love the car.

I had a '00 grand cherokee that i hated. slow, rough, gas guzzling, and all around impractical. Traded it off (had to basically give it away, but hated it so much I didn't care) for a surprisingly nice subaru baja. It has the comforts and gas mileage of a car, with a truck bed that can come with an optional waterproof cover. Plus, it has four fully usable doors and a 210hp turbo, with AWD. With 3400 miles I am already getting 23 mpg. better mpg than any SUV and it's quite the bundle of coolness (it does sometimes make me question my masculinity though).
