I'll see it when it comes out on HBO. I have around 15 free movie
tickets, but I never go. Theatre movie viewing is annoying these days.

As
for the original, I loved it. Back in the early '70's, my friends and I
convinced the 1st graders, that evil face eating Oompa Loompa's lived
in the woods, outside our school playground. We had those kids scared
as hell! Then we'd go across the street to the Country Store (the
actual name of the country store was the Country Store), and buy some
Everlasting Gobstoppers.

My daughter & I saw it yesterday & it was great fun. Depp is SCARILY Michael Jackson-ish, and does an excellent job. Danny Elfman wrote the music for each naughty child's song in a particular cliched "genre," (eg., Disco, Heavy Metal), and the Oompa Loompa's lyrics are from the book. The music in general does not have the usual Danny Elfman modalities which intrigued me because I had come to believe that was the ONLY kinda music he COULD write. The kid who plays Charlie is perfect, as is "Grandpa Joe." The sets are beautiful and crazy and kinda Dr. Seuss-ish.

I never read the book so, I don't know how it compares but....

I thought it was a bit annoying that Depps version of Willy Wonka is NEVER normal. At no time does he talk or behave like a normal dude.

Gene Wilder did an amazing job of sliding in and out of normalcy (sp? normality?) One second he was totally polite and good natured, the next second he was a total prick. Not unlike, say, Bugs Bunny.

As I said in the other thread; this is a very good movie. But only if you grade it on it's own merits..not if you compare it to the original.

It would've been interesting to see how some other actors would've tackled the Wonka role.

Will Ferrell.

Jack Black.

Crispin Glover.

Steve Buscemi.

or, an unknown like DANE COOK.

EDIT- Phil Hartman would've OWNED this role. What a shame he's gone.
"Jam out with your clam out"

Truly a bright spot of my everyday...PEACE

I think he wouldn't have done a good job at all. Not that I don't like some of Nicholas Cage's work, though for the role of Willy Wonka I don't think he would be good. I don't even like what Burton and Depp have turned the character into. I also agree that I don't understand why he needs to be a completely un-normal person. It seems (since I haven't seen this version) that they've made him weird and creepy, and possibly even scary for some kids. Whereas when I read the book I always imagined him being pretty close to what Gene Wilder did with it.

As for another actor, I think that Ewan McGregor probably would do a pretty good job as Wonka.

Though I certainly don't remember Wonka being at all like what I've seen in the various trailers and commercials, etc for the new movie.

My reaction was totally reverse to yours, SR, probably because I had seen the original film many, many times before finally reading the book when I was a kid. I remember being really struck with how un-Wilder-like the book version Wonka was, probably because Wilder in that film is one of my favorite performaces of all time.

I don't know, we're just seeing it differently...I mean, it's a book, that's pretty easy to do. I definitely agree that Depp's Wonka is different than the book (though much closer than Wilder, in my opinion)...mostly in that he's more tolerable. The book Wonka always seemed very unlikable to me. He really seemed to treat Charlie like he was a burden more than anything else. I think Burton's attempts to give the character a history makes him more real and enjoyable, while the book and Wilder version seem randomly bizarre and scarier because of it.
