Technical Suggestions for the Message Board [Archive]

First, I was curious about some of the icons used on the message
board.  I've been able to figure most of them out, but there
doesn't seem to be a place on the site with a legend of the
icons.  Ideally, in addition to a legend, it would be best if when
you scrolled over each icon the "ALT" text would show what it
does.  For example, most of the message subjects have a down arrow
meaning go to the bottom of the thread, but it's not obvious. 
 
This leads me to the second thing.  When I was looking for an
answer to the first thing, I went to the help page of the site and
noticed the number 14 of the FAQ (regarding how to listen to R/F on the
internet) is no longer correct and needs to be updated to reflect the
legal stream.Thanks in advance.

angrymissy,I was perplexed by your response because I was not
seeing any helpful text when I hovered over an icon.  But I
immediately wondering if it had something to do with FireFox. 
When I launched IE, the "tooltips" (as they're called) immediately came
into view. I did a little research and found that the HTML
standard calls for a TITLE tag to display tooltips and the ALT tag is
technically only supposed to be used as an alternative to displaying an
image, not as an enhancement.  Of course, Microsoft has never been
too concerned about obeying standards and they display the ALT text as
a tooltip when you hover.  Firefox, as usual, complies with the
standard.There is an interesting discussion about it <a href="http://www.gadgetopia.com/2004/11/09/FirefoxALTTagsAndTooltips.html" target="_blank" title="TITLE vs. ALT in tooltips">here</a>.Probably,
the TITLE tags should be added to rf.net so it's compliant.  On
the other hand, rf.net is a busy site and leaving such things out will
conserve bandwidth.  I'll leave it to the mods to decide what to

I hate reading threads that have when one guy quotes the other guys post and then it gets quoted again.. I suspect that whatever else they bought with it now runs everything else, like the ads or whatever and its a package deal, and they just cant "put it back", because everything else depends on it.  Just a theory.

Oh, I missed the "buying" part.  As far as I know, that's not the case.  The part I was talking about was how the new tools and stuff were added to the board makes it pretty damn impossible to just go back to the old ones.  Too many OTHER changes were made besides the tools themselves.  So something else will have to be found, unless people want a huge overhaul of EVERYTHING from top to bottom.Look at this way...as long as they DO work for the most part, we'd rather take the time to figure out something that works best for EVERYONE and in the long run than rushing into something just because it's different.  I mean, isn't that how we ran into these problems in the first place?I've had a ton of problems with the new setup, but what's the backspace deal you keep talking about?AND WHAT'S THE ANCHOR?!?

I've had a ton of problems with the new setup, but what's the backspace deal you keep talking about?The backspace problem is the same one I have when I try to put multiple letters together as inAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!  Which is how I scream when I have to backspace.It pauses.  You hit it and it just doesn't happen right away, which REALLY makes posting here a chore.  We have obviously either accepted it or tolerated it, but it's just another thing that no one seems to give a shit about.  <a name="Anchor">As far as the Anchor, no idea.  Fucking stupid.</a>  Clean messy code?  Why are there paragraph styles and shit?  Plus, I actually started to like that fucking spellcheck.  You take Spellcheck and leave the anchor?  Are you mad?  Too much word processing shit in there.AND BACKSPACING IS FUCKING GAY!!!!

Still no word on the damn anchor?? <img height="20" src="http://www.ronfez.net/messageboard/tiny_mce/themes/advanced/images/anchor.gif" width="20" border="0" /> I remember they were testing different quote balloons and I really do not like thw way this quoting thing works, especially when one guy quotes two different guys posts; it gets to the point you cant even tell who's posting the fucking thing!  I was told once how to change the display words for a link, but I forget and it certianly was far easier in the old tools.  So far, the only think I do like is the resizing of images and also text coloring.

I love the images and how you can link text, but the rest really doesn't help out.  Personally, I think smilies of any kind should be banned.And I'm ashamed to admit, but I still have no idea which tool to use to quote text, so I just use the quote code or the "Quote Post" option.I'm pathetic.

yea the quote thing is the only thing i figured out.  The anchor i believe is related in some way to adding text to a link.  I remember once i hit it and those ones next to it lit up and i cloud link, i think.™  Hey look what I can do with that horseshoe looking thing.

Type the word or phrase you want linked.Highlight it.The "chain" button two buttons to the left of the anchor will light up.  Click on it and a box will open for you to enter the url of the site you want to link.  Be sure to select the option to open the page in a new window!Hope that helps.

The anchor secures the cursor to the screen, so you cant backspace.  Hey,
how about when you're quote posting and get some stupid fucking color
or font you never asked for. So you change it, and for some reason the
font is never right, no matter which one you use.

a problem with the META tags on this message board.  Here is the

Well, yes.  The fact that Death Metal Moe is not listed as a
keyword is surely a major oversight.  But what I was getting at
was the promotion of the old WJFK show and time slot rather than the
current XM show.  Sorry for being so obtuse.

Being on a mac really sucks. If I'm using Safari, I can see the new tools, but I get the stupid symbols when I try to start a new paragraph.<div>Like this. And I can't backspace. </div><div>So I usually use Internet Explorer when I want to post. The trouble with that is I see NO tools. If I want to add an image I have to type in the html codes. Both suck, but I figure that's the price I have to pay being on a mac.</div>
