Absolutely Taylor Ham. One of the most mind-boggling things that
I've struggled with in this crazy world, is how something this good,
has been around for so long, and you just about can't get it anywhere
but Jersey. I never thought I'd say this, but thank the powers
that be that I was born in the Garden State.
weird how you go right over to New Jersey, and stuff has different
names. Its not like you're in Alabama. In NY, a sandwich is a "Hero" In
NJ its a "Sub" and in South Jersey/Philly area its a "Hoagie".

I tried it up here in CT a few weeks ago because of this board. I think they sliced it too thin because it didnt look like the picture on the first page. Taylor is the company that makes pork roll. Therefore "pork roll" is the correct answer. Calling it Taylor ham is like calling crescent rolls "Pillsburys flour". Ham being the main ingredient of pork roll and flour being the main ingredient of crescent rolls.

I only heard of it since I started working in Jersey, then when I moved to NJ (Middlesex County) I saw it in the store and picked some up for myself.

I call it Pork Roll. I see no point in calling it Taylor Ham since it's a brand name pork roll, Taylor ham is a brand of Pork Roll.

Not the same at all.

I've had bologna and I've had Taylor ham and fried bologna is NOT the same as fried Taylor ham.

Taylor ham has a kind of a sour-tangy taste to it while bologna is bland and kinda tastes like hot dogs. The difference is more like sourdough bread when compared to white bread.

BTW, seeing as how you don't like most meat products anyway, I'm not surprised that you weren't struck with the sudden craving of the Taylor ham that those of us who enjoy it are.

And to the poster who commented about calling pork roll "Taylor ham" being the same as calling Pillsbury biscuits "Pillsbury flour" it's not the same because #1-Pillsbury also markets its own flour and #2-it's actually more equivalent to calling any soda "Coke" or tissues "Kleenex" or even tampons "Tampax" ... the brand name is what you're identifying with the product, regardless of the branding.

The whole Taylor Ham/Pork Roll thing confuses me. I grew up in Rockland County NY, right on the NJ border and it's not something you would eat in that area. I know it's mostly a Jersey thing but I grew up so close to Jersey you would think it would have bled over. Where I lived for breakfast sandwiches we either got Bacon Egg and Cheese or Ham, Egg and Cheese or Sausage, Egg and Cheese.

The reason I'm able to get it here is because of the grocery chain I go to. It's PA based, so it has lots of PA/NJ type regional foods. They also have the scrapple that Ron likes and some very good steaks for making cheese steaks.

The problem is, Taylor Ham is not ham. Ham comes from the "ham" of a pig (the thigh). I don't think the pork that Taylor uses comes from the ham section of the pig.

A) Why the confusion? Doesn't it say "Taylor Pork Roll" on the package?

B) Is it just spam marketed for hipsters? Or is it something different entirely?

I was interested in trying it, but just read it's like a cross between Canadian bacon and spam. Wish I hadn't read that. It's apparently made by different companies, of which Taylor is one. That's a northern jersey name.

Yeah, anything Canadian bugs me too.

It's Jennie-O turkey ham because I'm cheap.

I take back my lackluster opinion from earlier. I had some tonight with egg and cheddar in a waffle sandwich. DELICIOUS!

I would really like some Taylor Swift ham.
