Those look like he-doodie cookies if you ask me. Also,
promotion rates were entirely different back in the day, especially in
wartime.  It is virtually (and maybe literally) impossible for
someone to make to to O-6 by the age of 30 nowadays.

Thats very true ADF, not only was it a time of war for Custer, et al, but it was also a volunteer commission, and not a regular army one. After the war, Custer went back to being a 2d looey, and lots of other guys who had been Major Generals were captains againAlso, back then you also had to deal with "Brevet" or honorary ranks, which are a mess to figure out...
