<p>Thats very true ADF, not only was it a time of war for Custer, et al, but it was also a volunteer commission, and not a regular army one. After the war, Custer went back to being a 2d looey, and lots of other guys who had been Major Generals were captains again</p><p>Also, back then you also had to deal with &quot;Brevet&quot; or honorary ranks, which are a mess to figure out...</p>
