Does anyone know of a free app that lets you edit MP3 files and is fairly easy to use?

Not free, no. Well, it shouldn't have been free, let me put it that way.

Just convert to AIFF and then encode back to MP3 when you're done.

Use Audacity if it's just one track. It's multitracking sucks though

If you're willing to open those purse-strings, I would definitely suggest Sony ACID software. It's very powerful yet easy to use.

Cool Edit is really great. They stopped making it and supporting it when Adobe bought the company. So in reality, two years ago my post may have been helpful.
