<p>Story (http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20050725/ap_on_bi_ge/labor_rift)</p>
<p> CHICAGO - The AFL-CIO succumbed to division Sunday, with its largest
union deciding to bolt the 50-year-old federation and three others
poised to do so in a dispute over how to reverse organized labor's long
slide.
</p>
<p>The
four unions, representing nearly one-third of the AFL-CIO's 13 million
members, announced they were boycotting the federation's convention
that begins Monday, a step that was widely considered to be a precursor
to leaving the federation.</p>
<p>They are part of the Coalition to Win, a group of seven unions
vowing to reform and modernize the labor movement — outside the AFL-CIO
if necessary. But many union presidents, labor experts and Democratic
Party leaders fear the split will weaken the movement politically and
hurt unionized workers who need a united and powerful ally against
business interests and global competition.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>I wonder if anyone cares about this stuff anymore. But I cant see
how a declining union breaking up is good for its members. And its the
same problem with unions in general, they want the whole fucking pie
sliced up their way. </p><p>The unions that want to break
away want to focus solely on organizing, not on politics. Sweeney, who
runs the AFL-CIO wants to do both. </p><p>In a way this is all
whistling past the graveyard, anyway. Globalization has made these guys
irrelevant. And that has more to do with advancing technology than
politics. </p>

I'm for anything that helps the worker, but I am also sick of the corruption of Unions and how Union bosses sell the lives of these men and women out everyday. I'd have to know more about the story to have an educated opinion, but I know I was in a union that was part of the AFL-CIO and the delegates couldn't give 2 shits about us.

<p>I'm a member of one of the Unions that broke away, or is attempting to break away, the UFCW(United Food and Commercial Workers Union) and so is my Pops (and my Grandfather was a Teamster)</p><p>Anyway, I don't really know what to think of all of this, because there's not much Union involvement in my life, other than the insurance I get thorough them. Our Contract with Giant Food was up last year, and I remember there was a big hullaballoo about there possibly being a strike, which thank God never happened, because I had just bought a car the week before the Vote.</p><p>The thing about labor Unions in general, and the whole blue collar job market is they are rapidly dissapearing because of 1) more people going to college now than ever before and 2) places like Grocery Stores have become such awful places to work that nobody wants a career there anymore anyway. Take Giant, where I work for instance. It used to be a great place to work, but since we were acquired and merged with Stop and Shop, the whole company has gone down the toilet, primarily because they quit hiring people from within like in Ye Olden Days. It used to be a Giant tradition that management, particularly upper management, like District Managers and such, would always come from within the company, people who had been with the company and had grown with it and knew how it worked. I work in a store now in Laurel that is frankly a dump. Half of it is missing, due to the fact that they keep starting/stopping a remodeling project, the building proper has been condemned, the power goes out all the time, the AC is broken, so we bake like Christmas Turkeys when its hot outside</p><p>Its become all about cutting costs, and since big bosses don't want to cut back on product, they are instead cutting labour costs, cutting the hours so much that it drives people away and creates a gigantic level of turnover, which means now instead of the 5 people I had working with me in my department, i now have 2, me and a manager, for an entire department. I have heard nothing on this subject from my Union, and its becoming a really big problem</p><p>Its just my opinion, but somewhere along the line it seemed like the Union stopped caring about the workers, and became more interested in its own political activities. My Dad used to go to every single Union meeting and was very active, but he quit going when every meeting had become a rally for the local Democratic Party</p><p>I just wanna hurry up and finish school so I can get outta there </p>

<p>Done deal, Dems worried (http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20050725/ap_on_bi_ge/labor_rift) </p><p> </p>
<p></p>
<p>Those four unions represent one-third of the AFL-CIO's 13 million
members. The SEIU and Teamsters alone account for more than $20 million
of an estimated $120 million AFL-CIO budget.</p>
<p>Much of that money goes to Democratic candidates and to political
operations that benefit the Democratic Party. Stern, Hoffa and their
colleagues in the Change to Win Coalition pushed the AFL-CIO to shift
focus from such political activity to recruiting new union members,
contending that a growing union movement would naturally increase its
political and bargaining power.</p>
<p>"They said no," Hoffa said at a coalition news conference held a few
blocks from the AFL-CIO convention site. "Their idea is to keep
throwing money at politicians."</p>
<p>Democratic politicians catch most of the AFL-CIO donations, one
reason why party leaders worry about a weakened federation. The AFL-CIO
also spends millions of dollars on programs that help get Democratic
voters to turn out on Election Day.</p>
<p> </p>
<p> </p>
<p>One of every three private-sector workers belonged to a labor group
when the AFL-CIO merged in the 1950s. Now, less than 8 percent of
private-sector workers are unionized.</p><p> </p>

<p><strong>Another large union decided to leave the
AFL-CIO Friday (http://edition.cnn.com/2005/POLITICS/07/29/labor.rift/) ,widening a rift that has cost the labor federation more
than a third of its members in the past week.</strong></p><strong />
<p>The United Food
and Commercial Workers International Union, with 1.4 million members,
sent a letter to AFL-CIO President John Sweeney announcing that it is
disaffiliating from the AFL-CIO.</p>

<p>i'm a union carpenter in NYC and i believe that pulling away was the right decision. only through increased membership will we have any real power. its a disgrace that in 50yrs union participation has decreased from 33% of the work force to 8%.</p>
