THIS GODDAMN THING CANNOT BREAK ON ME!!! AAAARRRRGHHHGH!!!!!It started to act up yesterday by not reading songs.  I reset it and it kinda worked, so I was worried.  I had to reset it like 5 times, and then I finally got this folder with a big ! on it.  Guess what, that's not an icon to let you know "HEY!  I'm working properly!"  Goddamn it!So after trying a whole mess of shit online from their support section I had to send it in.  Because it's been more than 6 months from the day my aunt bough it for me, I have to pay shipping.  30 bucks???  Gimmie a fucking break.  They get you by sending you their own box to ship in.  Man, I could pack that thing better than they could DREAM for under 10 bucks with shipping.  I wish they let me send it, but no dice.  So now I gotta wait for that, wait for them to get it, wait for them to diagnose it, then I guess see what they say and hope everything is under warranty, then wait for it to come back.This whole experience reminds me of one word.  What could it be......

I bought an iPod in November, and got a
replacement plan at CompUSA. Worked out for me this time, as the
battery completely died after a couple of months. It wouldn't hold a
charge for more than a couple of hours until the battery zeroed out.
Brought it into CompUSA, and a couple days later picked up a brand new
iPod.Moral of the story? After this one dies, I'll be looking for a non-Apple MP3 player.

Well the U2 iPod I have now was a very generous gift I got for Christmas.  So really, this is the 1st money I've ever put into it.  When this one dies, it's back to mix CDs and regular radio.

I bought my first one as an "open box" one that lasted about six months before it just started acting funny, so i took it to my local Apple Store, and it amazed all the clerks in there cause the Ipod was reading like it had a disk size of something like 80,000 gigs...Since I was still under warranty, i got a brand new one, which to date haven't had any problems withI can't imagine being without it....

<img height="422" src="http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/njdmmoe/iPod--Poodle.gif" width="555" border="0" />HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!  YES!!!!!Here, leaning against the poodle is my BRAND NEW iPOD!!!  Apple sent me a new one for some reason.  I guess it's cheaper to send me this than fix it.  It must have been the hard drive, I felt and heard it clicking.So now begins the long process of filling it back up.  I got this thing on Thursday before I went on my trip up to NH with Unhallowed, so the burning of CDs and adding of MP3s really started today.So no horror story here.  They were very quick and sent me a new one.  I am very happy.

This MOTHER FUCKER!!!Now, the fucking one the sent me is dead!  YOU PRICK!I am so fucking mad at Apple right now I can't tell you.  It's just disgusting.  I was getting issues with it freezing up on me, but I would reset the iPod and it was fine.  But on the ride home today it gave me the "sick iPod" screen and shut down.  I came home to troubleshoot it on their website, and nothing again.  Same problem.  The hard drive in the thing makes some noise to access and just can't.  Now it's not making ANY noise and my computer won't recognize it's connected.You know what, DON'T GET A FUCKING IPOD.  These assholes just have a sleek looking player that took off due to some trend.  I swear to fucking God if this happens after my warranty period I'm NEVER buying ANYTHING Apple again.  Think Different? How about FUCK YOU.  Your shit SUCKS.Only reason I have this thing is because it was a gift.  If I end up having to buy my own MP3 player, I will never get Apple's products.  MOtherfucker.  I am so pissed right now it's fucking sickening.

Similiar shit happened to Gateway. They had GREAT computers until everyone found out about them. The demand went up and they began getting mass produced. An older one might actually work better!Forget about tech support. In this day & age if you can't support yourself, you're fucked. Well that's it.  Apple OWNS me.  I'm their fucking bitch.  Turns out I'm still under the liimited warranty, and I'm going to buy the 60 dollar extended warranty for another year.  I know it's giving in, and I'm giving in.  I love the convenience of this thing way too much.  So in a few minutes I'm going up to Rockaway, my closest Apple store, to let them look at it and get the warranty.  I mean this will be the the second time it's died, but it's still cheaper than getting a new MP3 player, and I got this as a gift so this is the 1st chunk of real money I've put into it, besides the shipping fee for the last time it broke.I just feel so fucking beaten.  Now I have a wait and putting all my music back on it to look forward to.

Dear DMM;  This is probably not a solution that will work for you at this point (assuming you're on your way to the store) but in the future, when you have a catastrophic hard drive dump and the computer won't recognize the Ipod so that you can update/reload the software, one option is to put it in disk mode, which is on the Ipod website.  Then you can reload the software, and of course reload all your music as well (remember to take it out of automatic update before it wipes Itunes, kids!).  When I had an exciting Ipod failure, it was broken for a week because it would not reset in any way, and the apple just winking and blinking and driving me mad, I got really frustrated with every solution on the Apple website reading "if this reset fails, try it again." After the first hundred times, I became aware that I would not be resetting it. I don't know why the disk mode nugget couldn't be on the official website.   Regards, Virginia

So here's the scoop:I bought the year extended care package they offer.  That means I don't have to pay the 30 bucks to send my iPod back and I get phone support and replacements until next year now.  I was gonna pay 30 under my warranty that ends in early January, so for 30 extra bucks I get a year's free support and replacements.  It's not a bad deal if you look at it like that.They handed me another iPod right there and couldn't have been more helpful.  I'd recommend the people in the Rockaway, NJ Apple store to anyone.  I'm not impressed with the product but they people were great.So that's about it again.  I have a sinking feeling I'll be updating this thread again in the spring of '06 but let's hope not.  After downloading the latest iPod updater and Itunes, I shoved a few gigs of my music on the iPod, and I'm ready to start using it again already.  I'll add other shit as time goes on.  That's the biggest problem with it dying.  I lose all my music, and I don't have it all backed up on my hard drive.

Dear Moe;     If you can get a malfunctioning Ipod into disk mode, the computer will recognize it and you can update the firmware.  Also, this is how you can use the IPod to move big files from your work to home computer, or what have you.  Here are the directions to put a newer (click wheel) model into disk mode.<ol><li>Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Set it to Hold, then turn it off again.) </li><li>Press and hold the Menu and Select buttons for at least 6 seconds until the Apple logo appears. </li><li>When the Apple logo appears, release the Menu and Select buttons and immediately press and hold the Select and the Play/Pause buttons until the Disk Mode screen appears. </li><li>Disconnect iPod from the power adapter and connect it to your computer; the screen on the iPod will change and say "Do not disconnect" </li></ol>If you are still unable to put your iPod with a Click Wheel into Disk Mode, use one finger from one hand to press the Select button, and one finger from the other hand to press the Play/Pause button.   To get it out of Disk Mode, reset it:<ol><li>Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.) </li><li>Press and hold the Menu and Select buttons until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 10 seconds. but I don't know what they're thinking with that I-Pod movie thing. On
one hand it is an absolutely stupid idea, considering that there are
several other devices that provide the same service, yet I can see in
my mind the droves of sheep lining up to get this thing, just so they
can download 20 second clips of "The Real World" or some U2 music
video. I don't know what to do about your predicament, DMM, but I'd be
more willing to shell out 250 bucks for a PsP. That thing is awesome.

I'd rather get a PSP for video (Costs less, does more, Bigger screen) but to be fair, the TV shows for the iPod are the full shows (Lost, Battlestar Galactica, etc) not just clips, you can even buy full seasons.
