I don't mean songs that are depressing because of something that happened, or it remidns you of someone. Cause 'Yellow' by Coldplay would be number one for me if that were the case. I'm talking about straight up depressing songs. My top three:

Hurt-Johnny Cash

Creep-Radiohead

The Band Played Waltzing Matilda-The pogues

What do you think is the most depressing song?

"Diary" by Bread.

http://www.lyricsfreak.com/b/bread/23948.html

A few years ago, I had a guitar student that wanted to learn this song. I was amazed at how sad and somber it was. I'd never heard it before...then I had to put on the headphones and really LISTEN. The guy in that song is in such pain but he STILL somehow manages to wish the best for the love of his life...with her new husband. Very sad.

I took a video production class last year, and we used 'Mad World' for our music video. It is depressing.

The exclamation point on what is probably the most depressing album I have ever heard (why I love it so)

The Paper Chase - Dying with Decent Music

Well,
maybe better you than me
You’re much weaker, you’re more
clumsy
When I forfeit my patience to you
So maybe
you’ve had too much wine
Piggy’s flushed up ankles swell up as
my lady works the room

“Your sideburns always smell like sex”
Little sister, your big
brother, “the fuck” won’t be smothering you
Or calling to his
friends back east
“Oh my hostess, oh my pick up, oh my
dreadful… my white slave”
Let them die while some decent music
plays

With my shit shoe stumbles that’s me; dirty nails and awful
thoughts
I’ll use the words used up on commercials
Like
such sharp boys like to write songs, music and quick lines
This
feeling, I can’t confine that to a rhyme
But maybe I can when I
see you on the other side

See you on the other side, where we would be released
I’d sell
out everything if I could find such peace
See you on the other
side, where we would be released
I’d sell out everyone if I
could find such peace
I will be free

A friend of mine copied NIN's "With teeth". I honestly didn't expect very much and really I'm not crazy about it, just because the entire cd seems like Trent is trying way to hard to be a bit more appealing. But the last song on that album is amazing. "Right where it belongs" is genuinely a sad sad song.

See the animal in it's cage that you built
Are you sure what side you're on
Better not look him too closely in the eye
Are you sure what side of the glass you are on
See the safety of the life you have built
Everything where it belongs
Feel the hollowness inside of your heart
And it's all
Right where it belongs

What if everything around you
Isn't quite as it seems
What if all the world you think you know
Is an elaborate dream
And if you look at your reflection
Is it all you wanted to be?
What if you could look right through the cracks
Would you find yourself
Find yourself afraid to see?

What if all the world's inside of your head
Just creations of your own
Your devils and your gods
All the living and the dead
And you really are alone
You can live in this illusion
You can choose to believe
You keep looking but you can't find the woods
Are you hiding in the dreams?

What if everything around you
Isn't quite as it seems
What if all the world you used to know
Is an elaborate dream
And if you look at your reflection
Is it all you wanted to be?
What if you could look right through the cracks
Would you find yourself
Find yourself afraid to see?

And he paused and spit over the rail,
And it flew down to earth, just like hail.

He said, "no, we can be who we want to be."

He said, "no, we can be who we want to be."

Down on earth, he held her tight, she held her tight, he held him tight.

It was morning, and they'd cried all night.

Through the window he saw
the hail.

And she asked, "Have we failed?"

He said, "No, we can be who we want to be."

He said, "No, we can be who we want to be."

I just heard this last night, so it's stuck in myhead...

"I Hung My Head" Johnny Cash

I Hung My Head
Early one morning with time to kill

I borrowed Jeb's rifle and sat on the hill

I saw a lone rider crossing the plain

I drew a bread on him to practice my aim

My brother's rifle went off in my hand

A shot rang out across the land

The horse he kept running, the rider was dead

I hung my head, I hung my head

I set off running to wake from the dream

And my brother's rifle went into the stream

I kept on running into the salt lands

And that's where they found me, my head in my hands

The sheriff he asked me "Why had I run"

Then it came to me just what I had done

And all for no reason, just one piece of lead

I hung my head, I hung my head

Here in the courthouse, the whole town is there

I see the judge high up in his chair

"Explain to the courtroom what went through your mind

And we'll ask the jury what verdict they find"

I said "I felt the power of death over life

I orphaned his children, I widowed his wife

I beg their forgiveness, I wish I was dead"

I hung my head, I hung my head

Early one morning with time to kill

I see the gallows up on the hill

And out in the distance a trick of the brain

I see a lone rider crossing the plain

He's come to fetch me to see what they done

We'll ride together til Kingdom come

I pray for God's mercy for soon I'll be dead

I hung my head, I hung my head

There are several Alkaline Trio songs that are depressing. A quick list of a few of them.

Enjoy Your day

Blue In the Face

Radio(which is really great to scream when you're down)

Sorry About That

You're Dead

Trouble Breathing

While You're Waiting

Fine Without You

This list could really just go on and on and on. Alkaline Trio is a depressing band that is also amazing so it's good.

quote:
Radiohead - Street Spirirt

I have to agree with Meredith. Out of all his songs, most of which are "not upbeat" to put it mildly, Thom Yorke singled this one out: "Street Spirit' is our purest song, but I didn't write it. It wrote itself. We were just its messengers. Its biological catylysts. It's core is a complete mystery to me, and, you know, I wouldn't ever try to write something that hopeless. All of our saddest songs have somewhere in them at least a glimmer of resolve. 'Street Spirit' has no resolve. It is the dark tunnel without the light at the end. It represents all tragic emotion that is so hurtful that the sound of that melody is its only definition. We all have a way of dealing with that song. It's called detachment. Especially me.. I detach my emotional radar from that song, or I couldn't play it... I'd crack. I'd break down on stage. That's why its lyrics are just a bunch of mini-stories or visual images as opposed to a cohesive explanation of its meaning. I used images set to the music that I thought would convey the emotional entirety of the lyric and music working together. That's what's meant by 'all these things are one to swallow whole'. I meant the emotional entirety, because I didn't have it in me to articulate the emotion... I'd crack.... Our fans are braver than I to let that song penetrate them, or maybe they don't realize what they're listening to. They don't realize that 'Street Spirit' is about staring the f--king devil right in the eyes, and knowing, no matter what the hell you do, he'll get the last laugh...and it's real...and true. The devil really will get the last laugh in all cases without exception, and if I let myself think about that too long, I'd crack. I can't believe we have fans that can deal emotionally with that song... That's why I'm convinced that they don't know what it's about. It's why we play it towards the end of our sets. It drains me, and it shakes me, and hurts like hell everytime I play it, looking out at thousands of people cheering and smiling, oblivious to the tragedy of it's meaning, like when you're going to have your dog put down and it's wagging it's tail on the way there. That's what they all look like, and it breaks my heart. I wish that song hadn't picked us as its catalysts, and so I don't claim it. It asks too much... I didn't write that song."
Also, isn't Goth and blues music kind of cheating?

I think the reason Needle in The Hay makes people depressed is because
the scene in Royal Tenenbaums because before when i heard that song
before the movie it didnt make me as depressed. I mean granted
most Elliott Smith songs are depressing but when i first heard that one
i didnt think it was as bad as others until that movie came out.

Alone Again, Gilbert O'Sullivan

In a little while from now,
If I'm not feeling any less sour
I promised myself to treat myself
And visit a nearby tower,
And climbing to the top,
Will throw myself off
In an effort to make it clear to who
Ever what it's like when your shattered
Left standing in the lurch, at a church
Where people 're saying,
"My God that's tough, she stood him up!
No point in us remaining.
May as well go home."
As I did on my own,
Alone again, naturally

To think that only yesterday,
I was cheerful, bright and gay,
Looking forward to, but who wouldn't do,
The role I was about to play
But as if to knock me down,
Reality came around
And without so much as a mere touch,
Cut me into little pieces
Leaving me to doubt,
All about God and His mercy
For if He really does exist
Why did He desert me
In my hour of need?
I truly am indeed,
Alone again, naturally

It seems to me that
There are more hearts
Broken in the world
That can't be mended
Left unattended
What do we do? What do we do?

(instrumental break)

Now looking back over the years,
And what ever else that appears
I remember I cried when my father died
Never wishing to have cried the tears
And at sixty-five years old,
My mother, God rest her soul,
Couldn't understand, why the only man
She had ever loved had been taken
Leaving her to start with a heart
So badly broken
Despite encouragement from me
No words were ever spoken
And when she passed away
I cried and cried all day
Alone again, naturally
Alone again, naturally
