ESPN Picks Broadcast Team for 'Monday Night Football' <div />Michaels, Kolber, Tafoya and Theismann Will Be Part of Show Starting in '06 <div /><p>&nbsp;</p>NEW YORK (July 26) - Al Michaels is staying with Monday Night Football when it moves from ABC to ESPN for the 2006 NFL season, parting with John Madden after four seasons in the booth together. <div /><p class="articleText">Michaels has been the play-by-play man on Monday Night Football since 1986, the last three with Madden as analyst. After this season, Madden is moving to NBC, which is taking over the Sunday night time slot in 2006 for what the NFL considers its main prime-time package.</p><p class="articleText">Michaels will be joined in the booth by Joe Theismann, who had teamed with play-by-play man Mike Patrick and Paul Maguire on ABC's Sunday night games.</p><p class="articleText">&nbsp;</p><p class="articleText">Ok this was a bit of a surprise to me. I think ABC is losing a MAJOR cash cow. Not everyone will have cable to watch ESPN. <p>This is what we like to call old old news.&nbsp; However, the lineups are new news as far as who is in the booth on Monday nights.........however the madden to NBC is also old news.</p><p>Everyone thinks that the people are losing a football game by monday night football going to cable, however, you will now get the sunday night game (which was on cable) on free tv and monday night switches to pay tv.........the situation is a wash.</p><p>Plus ABC loses 17 games that get paltry ratings, and they pay to much for....monday night football has been in constant decline for something like 7 years and it is a drain on ABC to continue to do the show.&nbsp; So now they can concentrate on their college football coverage and make it the best in the game to offset the loss.&nbsp; Also if anyone has noticed NBC has put together a nice little sports niche for itself since it lost the AFC games to CBS.&nbsp; They have ND football, the Arena League, the olympics and some major golf events.</p><p>But to re-iterate old old news</p>

<p>I think that part of NBCs deal is that they'll get to choose what games they'll get to broadcast on Sunday night.&nbsp; This will avoid some of the bad match-ups that ABC would get later in the season between two teams with bad records.&nbsp; </p><p>ABC had sought the same thing from the NFL but the league said that it would be logistically impossible to arrange schedules and stadium availability on short notice (ie. take a good match-up scheduled for Sunday and move it to Monday)&nbsp; The league is now banking on the Sunday night game being the flagship and not Monday. </p><p>&nbsp;</p>

<p>Joe Theismann joining Monday Night Football just cemented MNF's place behind 24, Raw, Home &amp; Garden's Basket Weaving Review, and EVERYTHING ELSE on Monday nights.&nbsp; If the sound links up well I might mute the TV and turn on the WFAN for play-by-play, but I refuse to listen to Joe Theismann tell me ANYTHING about football.&nbsp; </p><p>Not&nbsp;Bob Murphy in his last few years, not Susan Waldman on a weekly basis, not even Tim McCarver is dead wrong as often as Joe Theismann.&nbsp; Don't get me wrong, McCarver is un-listenable, but Theismann spouts &quot;knowledge&quot; and pontificates ad nauseum over situations and his explanations are just wrong in terms of how football is played.&nbsp; I can't comprehend how someone who was a field general could have forgotten so much about how his sport is played, but he's HORRID in the booth.</p><p>The only&nbsp;sounds I EVER want to hear out of&nbsp;Joe Theismann's body should&nbsp;emanate from between his ankle and knee.</p>

<p>With as bad as announcing has gotten i have taught myself to tune the announcers out of the game, when you are a redskin fan and you have Bill Maas and Kenny Albert doing your games you develop the talent really quick.</p><p>The only football announcer i like is (get your flames ready):&nbsp; Jerry Glanville, sure he's a bit of a jackass but he understands football and explains things in a very distinct way by not making the average fan feel dumb plus they teamed him with the guy who does NBA games on TNT (Kevin Harvick?) who is one of the better play by play guys out there.</p><p>I also like Bill Walton because he isn't afraid to rip into the &quot;superstars&quot; of basketball, he may be off base but he doesn't play favorites.</p>
