Pee Shy

Hey, Horde King,

Do you know anything about people who cannot pee with other people in the room. I cannot urinate if I am sober and other people are in the bathroom, or if I am drunk and in a line for the bathroom. If I am drunk in a bathroom with many stalls, I can pee, but not if I am sober. I appreciate some advice.

The "official" term for pee shy is "avoidant paruresis." It is classified as a non-generalized social anxiety disorder and affects a surprisingly large number of people (about 6% if I recall correctly). It can affect men and women, but men to a much greater extent. I looked up the diagnosis code (for billing purposes ;)) and it is DSMIV 300.23.

The physiological explanation for the condition is that being around people while trying to urinate can cause anxiety, anger, shyness and other symptoms. These cause the urethral sphinxter (both inner and outer) to contract. Both must be relaxed for urination.

There are some treatment options including desensitization and cognitive behavior therapy.

Thanks Horde King. I have tried drinking alot of water. It doesn't work for me. If its alot of beer, then I can go, just as long as I am not keeping someone else from going. If I have to wait in a line, with someone behind me, then I won't be able to go no matter how drunk I am. I am hoping that someone does more research, and comes out with a pill.

I'm not aware of any pills but check with your doctor to make certain.

One technique is to desensitize you to the idea of other people being around you. Get a "pee buddy" to stand far away when you go to the bathroom. As you become more comfortable with the idea that someone is present (although far away) gradually bring him closer until after much time and work, he's able to stand a urinal away from you and you can still go.

It's difficult to do, and requires a lot of effort on your part (as well as a good friend).

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately, the problem gets worse if I am with people I know. Say I go into a bathroom in the mall, and there is another person in the room. If I use a stall far away, I can usually go. But if that other person was someone I knew, it wouldn't work.

I don't know if a doctor would understand.

I always have to keep one stall open between me and the next guy. Is that weird? But if I am drunk, I will piss right next to someone.

I can totally relate to your problem.

I use to be able to pee anywhere, anytime, whatever.

One night in H.S. we were at this bar and I was totally F'd up. So I stumbled in the bathroom to pee and the bar just had this long trough where everyone was just lining up and pissing in.

So I walk over, wipp it out, put my head down on the wall and pass out. A few minutes laterr, some grabs me and tosses me out of the way. I walk out of the bathroom, never peeing, and pretty f'n shooken up on what just happened.

Anyway, since then I suffer from stage fright all the time. When I am out at bars and I have to pee, I wait until a stall opens up, cause that is the only way I can go.

Tazz1376 - There's no reason to be shy in front of your doctor. Anything you could possibly tell him, he's heard a million times before. As pee shyness affects about 7-8% of the population, (I looked up the frequency) he's bound to know something about it.

Witholding things about your health from your doctor is a dangerous habit to get into.
