What were the songs Mikeyboy played last night on the bumper music cuts? Some of those kicked total ass.

Get Frank Black's "Dogs in the Sand" too--some great slide guitar on it.

Mikeyboy inspired me to ask Ron if I could pick some of the bumper music for their last night on WJFK - last Friday. I was able to pick four of them, and while none of us in the studio (other than R&F) knew for sure that it was the last night (until the last segment), everyone had a hunch, which (after I asked myself WWMBD?) I reflected it in my songs...

* "Radio, Radio" - Elvis Costello
* "Please Don't Talk About Me When I'm Gone" - Billie Holiday
* "We Want The Airwaves" - Ramones
* "So Long Baby Goodbye" - Last Train Home (cover of David Alvin song)

Last Train Home is my favorite local band - I've known the lead singer and songwriter, Eric Brace, since he first started working at The Washington Post and I was at the American Film Institute. They've put out a total of 7 CDs (including 2 EPS and 1 best of foreign press comp), have toured everywhere from DC, to New York, to LA, to Nashville, to Austin, to Philly and even Australia. They've opened for Willie Nelson, have played at Wolf Trap, the Kennedy Center and even that evening were headling a show at The Birchmere. Recently they recorded someing for "The Late, Late Show with Craig Fergerson" which will air TOMORROW night (August 4). It was a major thrill for me to hear my favorite band played on my favorite radio show - especially playing a song that talks about parting ways and missed opportunities ("You made a lot of promises I ain't seen yet and I ain't gonna ask you please"), which (to me) really sums up the time the WJFK era.

quote: So Long Baby Goodbye - Dave Alvin

I know
I've been foolin' myself too long
I'm never right but always wrong
Goodbye, Baby, so long

You know
You never let this thing catch on
You never let me be that strong
Goodbye, Baby, so long

There was a cold wind blowing on the night we met
The leaves fell from the trees
You made a lot of promises I ain't seen yet
And I ain't gonna ask you please

We know
None of us are gonna cry
It wasn't even worth the try
So long, Baby, Goodbye

There was a cold wind blowing on the night we met
The windows were rolled up tight
We both asked for something we could never get
Now I'll do the thing that's right

We know
None of us are gonna cry
It wasn't even worth the try
So long, Baby, Goodbye
