This is amazing and heartbreaking.

He mentioned R&F
saying nice things to him. He also mentioned how Howard and O&A
handled this with class. For local people who have listened to him, the
most amazing part was hearing how Jack Diamond showed up to the
viewing.

The saddest part of the story was when he mentioned
how they were supposed to close on a dream house in Tampa - a place
right on the beach.

The most touching part of the story was a
letter she wrote him in October of last year; a letter she wrote after
she had a dream that she had died.

Just astounding.

I'll have to listen to the show, it sounds from your posts like it's really emotional stuff and is probably one of the hardest shows he's had to do.

As for him being alone, perhaps he's doing that because Mike did the show alone the day she died and perhaps he just wanted it that way. Either way, I respect him for it and hope he and his kid are doing okay in getting through this.

To be perfectly honest, a good chunk of D&M's usual callers aren't the sharpest tools in the drawer...like it was said, this is probably a lot of them honestly trying to be sincere.

Don said he didn't know how he was going to handle the show today,
so he just talked for one full hour. No commercials. Actually, I think
it went almost 75 minutes. Just him talking. He finally decided to take
a commercial break and said he would come back and take calls.

He
knew that people wanted to express something, but was very clear that
as of tomorrow he did not want to hear the "I'm so sorry..." calls or
the "Mike and Buzz did a great job..." calls. He talked about how he
will keep talking about his life, and the odd circumstances that have
come up in his life now, but that he is there to do entertainment and
that she would want him to move on. The second break was maybe 35 - 45
minutes, and then they went into best of for the rest of the day.

He
wanted the callers basically to just get out of their system all of the
nagging or dumb or innappropriate questions now. I was shocked how
honest he was when he answered the organ donor question, and I laughed
when he did his first hang up on the dopey, but well intentioned, woman
who asked about when Bart was born. And just to prove he will be the
same Don, he rightly ripped the woman who asked about him now being
over protective of his son a new asshole.

The honest discussion
of the man who hit Freda was also well done, imo, and only really
appropriate today. I was unsure if he should take calls, but that one
convinced me that it was important for him to address certain topics in
that forum.

During the first hour, it was very touching to
hear how Bart was there to help him through the Friday memorial service
- how he was the strong one. But on Saturday, during the funeral,
Bart was supposed to speak but couldn't and how Don had to be
there for his kid.

Yes - he played two versions of "Everlasting Love," and both times it was very touching.

The
Ron and Fez mention was brief, but nice. He had gone through all of the
Washington area DJs that had been there at the service, and who he
heard from. He remembred Ron and Fez, and mentioned that he knew they
were gone, and he knew they were going then, but that he loved them and
appreciated whatever they had said to them. All you have had to do was
listen to the two times R&F brought it up on the air (that first
day
they were back, and then last Friday), or the months of pleading for
managment by D&M to do the right thing by R&F, to know how
sincere they were.
They might not have been able to have one last goodbye crossover
between shows, but over this tragedy, I think we can assume that
D&M understand why R&F had to move on and certainly there is no
ill will.

Again, tho - the things that touched me the most were
the stories of finding that letter, and then of that house in Tampa
they had planned to move to once his contract expired in 3 years.

Their Tuesday show was their first show in over 5 weeks with everyone together. I listened to the first segment, and then later in the show for part of another, and I think they were doing an excellent job juggling trying to do a normal show, and not completely ignore the tragedy.

The first segment included a couple of references to R&F being gone from WHFK. Without mentioning them by name (in the first segment), Rob started the show joking he was relieved D&M were there, "Becuase I had heard you had gone off to XM!"

A few minutes later Mike made the joke that WJFK was where "shows that made a career in terestrial radio" go before they leave for satellite. Don laughed and said, "We're still here, Mike," and then Buzz added, "We'll turn the lights out on our way out." O&A, Stern AND R&F have all been on WJFK before going to satellite - very funny.

I don't know if there were any more references to Ron and Fez. It wouldn't surprise me, since D&M are not under any sort of gag order or false sense of loyalty to the station. I was going through some old clips from earlier in the year, and there's a segment where Mike talks about being "very, very" bummed about R&F's situation, and you could actually hear the dissapointment in the brief time they mentioned them. I wasn't there yet, but I do know that Mike and Buzz made a point to talk with Fez on Friday between shows (before Ron showed up) and wish them the best of everything. I am sure that D&M really feel all alone there now.

Anyway, the rest of Tuesday's first segment was some pretty interesting stuff about how Don has been coping with the day to day things; how he is annoyed at the well intentioned people who go over board; and how he hasn't done it yet, but he can see himself pulling "the Larry David" move of using mentioning his dead wife at times to get sympathy. One of the funnier / sadder / sicker things he revealed (and something I had never even thought about, thank god) was that he hasn't even "made number three" yet (which is D&M code for "spunk"). As someone who has always prided himself on the air as always able to go, he said that this is his longest dry spell (since he "was four.")

Later in the show, they were failing at getting a game show off the ground, and Don yelled at their producer, Beth Ann McBride. At one point he told her, "You know I'm not really mad at you," and then he called her, "The beautiful Beth Ann McBride...you know, I can say that now." It was pretty funny, and sad, and creepy all at the same time. A few minutes later there was something mentioned about trying to help him get this game show to work, and shot back, "What I really need is someone to help me get my junk to work again."

I've seriously lost faith in fucking humanity. The pain in that man's voice alone cut into me so much that I had to ask Jeff to turn off the show. Anyone who could listen to that and crack jokes has no fucking soul. I can't wait to see how many jokes you'll be cracking when your fucking mother or wife dies. Assholes.

Why make any negative comments at all relating to this situation? Why? Is it nessecary to throw a snide remark in about how you don't like the show at this point in time? It's not fucking funny. It disgusts me that there are people out there that would even think to joke about a person who just LOST HIS FUCKING WIFE. His son LOST HIS MOTHER. That show really AFFECTED me. It was genuine. The man is obviously in a world of hell. Christ. I can't believe there are people like that out there without an ounce of fucking sympathy in their hearts.

Think about how you would feel if you lost your mother or wife suddenly like that. Put yourself in his shoes.

I was one of the people who was bashing Moe and
others for taking shots at D&M (not Freda) in the days following
her death. I pretty much agreed with what he was saying, it doesn't
affect me, I feel bad for the guy but I don't particularly care and they're radio show is still shit. I just
thought it wasn't right to be doing it at that time and place.

But I think we are now past the point of being overly sensitive.
Don said he wants things to go back to normal. No ones making fun of
Freda. So what's the problem? D&M suck. They are radio cancer, and
A#1 on the list of fuckos. Maybe now with R&F off JFK I won't have
to hear about them at all anymore. That would be great.

quote: I have to agree with Moe here...he said nothing disrespectful about Freida. And as for the show, can somebody please explain to me how it is funny, or even listenable for that matter? I hated them when they were in NYC and since the accident I have listened a bit on the internet. It is the most predictabe, contrived bull shit I have ever heard. How are these guys popular in DC....it is almost embarrassing how bad they are.
You know, all this Don and Mike talk made me look up my old thread I started asking people what, if anything they fould funny about Don and Mike and why they thought they were so popular. The overwhelming answer was that they used to be edgy when they needed ratings, then got progressivly more and more boring. Now they just enjoy that "We're in here so we're the guys" kind of deal that Howard is riding. No one laughs like they do with Ron and Fez listening to that garbage, and eveyrone pretty much said they chuckle occasionaly but just leave them on as background talk noise. This is what I suspected all along, but I wanted to hear it from the fans.

I guess that makes sense...but there have to be some people out there that are as in to these guys as much as we are all into R&F, and those are the listeners I would like to ask "what in the hell is funny about these two no talent ass clowns?"

Again what you find unfunny other people may find funny. Why do people have to explain what they like to you......as i said before if you want to know why people like them do as Moe said and search for those posts

quote:
Did anyone catch Don talking about trying to "rub one out" by watching porn yesterday?

Funny story.

He
was telling right when I got into the car - agreed - very, very funny
image of him, alone, in his house trying to find some sort of
pornography that would get him off. Eventually going to his normal
stash, and how it actually depressed him because all he could think of
was the times he had to hide it from Freda. He did a good job keeping
it funny - laughing at himself, with his pants around his ankles,
crying while watching porn. That was the only segment I caught
yesterday, and again I thought the tightrope they are walking to be
excellent.

Missy - I agree 100% with a comment you made earlier
in this thread; about the folks who felt the need to say they felt bad
for Don, even though they didn't like him. "Yeah, you're a real dick
and I don't think you're funny, but sorry about your dead wife, dude."
Fuck that. Either you have the ability to distinguish between real and
radio and have empathy for a stranger without any qualifiers, or you
don't.

I do think this thread is different from the earlier one
- and the critics moving on is really what it's like. I can definately
see your side, though, because (as I said earlier) it brought a lot of
shit to the surface for me with my own life. Friends and family who
died too soon; the thought of my godson, who is Bart's age, and what he
would have to go through if he lost either of his folks. Of course, I
suppose this just makes me a Don and Mike defender, and I suppose
there's nothing worse than that.
Nobody said that. Everyone has said we hate the show. Read what we say. Not what is easier to attack. I HATE HIS SHOW. This is not the thread to discuss it.
I started this thread. I know what it is about. And the people on the first two pages knew what it was about too. It's only when you and your sociopath friends couldn't deal with everyone showing compassion for "someone else" that you had to throw in a uncalled for attack. Read the thread. It is you who hijacked it.
