The Flyers also signed Mike Rathje and Chris Theiren. Hatcher and Rathje are on the down sides of their careers but they're tough. Theiren probably has a few good years left. Looks like Clarke's trying to mold the Flyers into the Broad Street Bullies again.

The Boston Bruins have agreed to terms with right wings Glen Murray on a four-year contract and
Shawn McEachern on a two-year contract, it was announced today by Bruins General Manager Mike O'Connell.
Both players were unrestricted free agents, and in keeping with club policy, terms of the contract were
not released.

I heard somewhere that the Devils and Brian Rafalski were going to mutually part ways. That would mean more cap room since arbitration says Niedermayer is supposed to get $7 million per year. If Stevens retires then they'll have to sign another defenseman or bring up meathead David Hale from Albany for the 6th defenseman.

I can't find any info to confirm the Modano move. Anybody else see this announced?

And Forsberg is probably definately coming back to the NHL. I think he got his fix (for now anyway) of Sweden, and has stated he'd love to come back to the Avs if they can fit him (big if). In fact, the rumor around the league is that Naslund and Forsberg are willing to take some big pay cuts in order to play together. They've been friends since kids and have always wanted to play together. There have been leaks out there that the Avs big four (Hejduk, Tanguay, Blake and Sakic) all might reduce their salaries in an effort to get them both into an Avs uniform for a few years. The other rumor is that Pierre Lacroix, the Avs GM, might move Tanguay or Hejduk in order to make this happen. Other teams mentioned as in the picture are Vancouver, Anaheim and the NY Rangers.

Get your balls out of your purse and step up to flavor! Looks like the Oilers are really going the "leadership" route for 2005/06. Peca and Pronger should give this team a whole new look, and I'd assume each of these guys will warrant at least an A. Strong character guys on O and D is not a bad way to go. Oh and they sure can play the game as well.

I can't argue with you here bc I've always loved Brewer. The team did get older, but at least these guys sure are tough and gamers. In fact, if Pronger can even get to 75% of his former self, he's a blue chip D. Peca always plays tougher then York, but has less O upside. It comes down to leadership and overall plus minus. Factoring all these things, I can't honestly give someone the big advantage. However, if it involved my team I'd much rather Brewer as Pronger is obviously still a risk.

As a result, St. Louis has to be ecstatic with Wednesday morning's move as it offloaded Pronger and his restrictive $7.2 million qualifying offer to Edmonton for All-Star defenseman Eric Brewer, qualified for $2 million, and two top defense prospects, Doug Lynch and Jeff Woywitka.

"There's no arguing that the Blues gave away the best player in this deal. The 30-year-old Pronger, who was the NHL MVP just five tears ago, is among his generation's elite defensemen — a player capable of dominating a game offensively, defensively or physically. Every time he takes a shift for the Oilers, he will make that club better than it was before he arrived.

But, on those rare occasions during a game when the ironman is not on the ice, Pronger's presence on the team will hamstring the Oilers' severely. Pronger's salary takes a huge chunk out of the Oilers' payroll, limiting their flexibility to fill out their roster.

According to one report, the Oilers have more than $22 million invested in the 13 players they currently have under contract. That means that Pronger has tied up nearly a third of the team's payroll so far, making nearly twice as much as any other player on the team. Still, general manager Kevin Lowe still must sign a bevy of his own restricted free agents, including big-ticket players like Ryan Smyth, Raffi Torres and Marty Reasoner, and find enough other pieces to make the team competitive.

Lowe found one of those pieces late Wednesday afternoon, acquiring veteran center Mike Peca from the Islanders in exchange for restricted free agent Mike York and a conditional draft pick. Peca, the team's captain and one of the best defensive centers in the game today, is scheduled to make $3.99 million this season."

This sums it up nicely Manny. I'll post a little more in the next one.

Brewer, who is four years younger than Pronger, played for the Canadian Olympic Team in the 2002 Olympics. It was at that tournament that he really announced his arrival as a world-class player.
Brewer can not dominate a game offensively in the dynamic ways Pronger can, but he is a reliable power-play staple, capable of posting 10 goals and 35 points a season. At the other end, however, the 6-foot-3 Brewer is nearly as big, and just as mean as the 6-foot-5 Pronger.

Lynch, 22, got his first taste of NHL action with a two-game call-up with the Oilers last season. The 43rd player chosen overall in 2001 NHL Entry Draft, he also has two full seasons of minor-league seasoning under his belt, scoring 12 goals and 38 assists in 148 American Hockey League games. At 6-foot-3, Lynch also has the size to be a physical factor.

Woywitka, 21, was a first-round draft choice by the Philadelphia in 2001. He is also 6-foot-3 and projects as a 40-point contributor once he reaches his potential. Edmonton had acquired Woywitka in the trade two years ago that delivered MIke Comrie to Philadelphia.

So, Pleau turned his franchise defenseman into three building blocks on the blue line that could spend the better part of the next decade with the franchise, defining its future in much the same way Pronger defined its recent past.

Hats off to St. Louis on this deal! The more I read about it, the more I like it. They got Brewer, who isn't much off Pronger's ability and much healthier, a former second rounder, and a former first rounder. Both of the guys I didn't know are really young, with good numbers, along with Brewer being half a decade younger than Pronger. The financial aspect would have led me to believe that the Oilers could have given up less. Who knows, but it seems the Blues won this trade, regardless of who got the overall best player. It sure as hell isn't like the Shaq deal, logic states it's the opposite.

The Colorado Avalanche announced that the Club has signed center Pierre Turgeon to a two-year contract.
Turgeon, 35, is a 17-year NHL veteran having played for Buffalo, NY Islanders, Montreal, St. Louis and most recently, the Dallas Stars. A veteran of 1,215 NHL contests, Turgeon is five goals away from his 500th career goal. He’s compiled 35 goals and 60 assists in his 104 career post-season games. The four-time NHL All-Star is coming off his 2003-04 campaign with the Dallas Stars where he compiled 15 goals and 25 assists in 76 games. A perennial contributor on special teams, Turgeon has collected 182 career power play goals and has 85 game-winning goals to his credit.

"We’re pleased to be able to add a player of Turgeon’s caliber to our lineup," said Avalanche President and General Manager Pierre Lacroix. "We expect the new rules and new dynamics of today’s NHL will allow a player of his skill to be a strong addition to our team."

The 6-1, 199-pound native of Rouyn, Quebec was the first overall selection in the 1987 NHL Entry Draft selected by the Buffalo Sabres.

"I had the opportunity to coach him in St. Louis for several years," said Avalanche Head Coach Joel Quenneville. "He’s a great playmaker and will help us in all phases of our game."

This right after the Forsberg signing, no comparison. The Avs lost a lot so far.

From EJ Hradek's blog on ESPN.com

According to agent Kevin Epp, free agent defenseman Scott Niedermayer, will announce his final destination on Thursday afternoon (Eastern time). Speaking late Wednesday night from Vancouver, Epp says Niedermayer has made his decision, but won't reveal the choice until Thursday.

The Devils, Ducks and Sharks were among the final three clubs on Niedermayer's wish list. According to Epp, there was a fourth team that made a late bid, but he indicated that club was on the outside looking in.

Niedermayer is a great player and a quality person. His final decision will be based on many different factors. He's not a guy who will be chasing every last dollar. He figures to cash a pretty big check no matter where he goes. Based on the Chris Pronger and Jarome Iginla signings, Niedermayer will probably get somewhere between $6.5 million to $7 million on a five-year deal.

I think Raf will stay, and Stevens will play. It's sucks that Neids basically wasted our time since the Devs were rumored to have offered him the same deal. Time we could have used to secure a name replacement.

I guess playing with his bro is more important than winning cups at this point. Gigere will not be the goalie we saw in '03 with the new rules and smaller pads, so the brothers Niedermeyers will have to work twice as hard. And i'll hopefully die before the name "THE MIGHTY DUCKS" is etched into Lord Stanley's Cup.

at least this opens some cap space for Lou to pull something out his ass like he always does. Dont forget Rafalski was literally out of nowhere, Martin is coming on, and if Hale is healthy he could be another Stevens in the making.

i think that lou probably already has 20 guys for the team, and is

everyone will have 4 stars and struggle to have money to fill the team,
while the devils will need 2 more guys and have 9 mill of space
Also, keep in mind the reason there are so many free agents isnt
because of the salary cap. They are free agents cause their contracts
expired either the end of the last year played or would have ended
after the year that was cancelled. Even if they come back with no cap,
they still would have had 3-400 players available

The Devils already have a rather complete roster.

That
being said, it's clear that Lou wanted Niedermayer. The Devils were one
of the last three teams left. They probably offered him the max like
everyone else.

And Stevens coming back doesn't comfort me all
that much. Post Concussion Syndrome + 2 years older + rules
thatminimize his impact = no good.

And something that hasn't been mentioned. These rule changes really impact Brodeur's
assualt on the record books. As long as Lou keeps on putting together
winning teams and Marty doesn't get injured, he shoudl be able to get
the wins record. The new rules won't affect his chances of that. But
anything else? He could be the most dominant goalie in the league for
now until he retires, but if the new rules jack up the scoring, it may
not matter. I'd say he has little to no hope of setting the shutout
record now.

I always liked the fact that the Devils could pair up an offensive minded defenseman (niedermayer, Rafalski and Martin) with a defensive defenseman. I guess Malakhov is supposed to take Niedermayer's place in that respect. Marty's gonna get a lot of unwanted work form Malakhov-it-up, though.

I'm glad they signed Dan McGillis. I liked him when he was with the Flyers. I don't have much faith in Sean Brown or David Hale. Even if Stevens doesn't play, it looks like they're set on defense now.

And I hate to burst your bubble, but I definately think the Devs wouldn't have won at least two of those Stanley Cups if they had to come through the West. They still won and I realize that, but the West was destroying each other while the Devils had to go through the Flyers (oooooo!), Caps (who care?) and the newest team of the moment. The first true overall team that came in was the Lightning, but now everything has changed. I hate the new league so far. It really is a joke.

Also, don't act like the free agency market would have been even close to what it is right now without the new agreement. Teams bought out a ton a contracts, didn't make appropriate offers to many and others were simply pushed aside. The worst part about it is that awful teams with horrible management now will be half decent simply due to the setup. Teams will be hard pressed to keep their talent if they routinely draft well.

Oddly enough Hbox, that's the one Cup I think they truly earned. Even the year the Avs faced, and beat the Devils in the finals the Avs were down a lot of big players (Forsberg lost his fucking spleen for crying out loud). I truly thought they'd pull off another title not having to face a team even close to it's ability after fighting they're way through the hell that was the West. Truthfully, the Avs got lucky that a weaker Florida Panther's team made it through the East in 1996. Trust me, I have nothing but respect for the Devs, just stop making it like Lou didn't make a mistake this time around. He did give him a good offer, but Scott was definately leaving, and now Lou has missed out on a lot of good free agents. You can't tell me they wouldn't have liked to put a few offers out there on some of these big names. They through 7 mil at Scott, thats 2 top notch signings that just aren't really out there now. He was stubborn here and it hurt them. I think P. Lacroix made this same mistake with Forsberg and hence they immediately jumped on two shittier free agents who are way past they're prime. In this feeding frenzy that just went down, time was a huge factor. The Avs and Devs never got in the mix, while our foes, the Flyers in the East and what's listed below in the West.

NHL's economic situation bad for Avs

DENVER (AP) - When the Colorado Avalanche were last seen on the ice, they were exposed as a slowing, aging team that got outskated in the Western Conference semifinals by San Jose.

When the Avalanche are next seen on the ice, they will look pretty much the same, but without two of their best players, Peter Forsberg and Adam Foote.

General manager Pierre Lacroix wants his offseason moves to be viewed in a positive light. And to take the roster spots of Forsberg and Foote, the Avalanche signed veterans Pierre Turgeon and Patrice Brisebois.

<img src="http://members.aol.com/dxix

Let's say Stevens doesn't come back. Who's the new captain? I would say Madden, just because he'sone of the best defensive forwards in the game and a gritty player. The Devils tend to like players like that. And If I remember clearly, I think he was a big positive locker room influence.

Madden would be a good choice. I'd consider Langenbrunner and Rafalski as well and consider Elias and Brylin for A's.

Kariya going to Nashville is interesting. Maybe him and Sullivan can help Legwand emerge into the talent he was projected to be, moving the team into a little more offense oriented direction.

yeah kariya going to nashville will be good for fan interest but i don't think that is going to make an overall difference for that team.no offense to nashville but i think this is one of the teams that isn't doing the nhl any good, kinda hurts it because it is allowing too many guys that are good but not nhl level talent to be there
