Here's the other thing, North Dakota is on that list, and that's a pretty interesting story in itself.

They have an alumnus there with bucketloads of money, and this guy built them a hockey stadium completely with his own money, and this thing is a jewel, a really swank place to watch a hockey game...theyve had recruits come in and see the place and committ on the spot

I think at the time North Dakota(the Fighting Sioux) was thinking about changing their mascot, and this guy told them if they changed the mascot he would kill the arena, so the school relented, and he therefore went on to basically rub it in their faces....there are Fighting Sioux Logos all over the arena every where you look, and even on the seats...

It will be interesting to see how this plays out
....We haven't seen the sun since '71Thanks Monsterone!!

Here's the article, the guy's name is Ralph Engelstad

http://chronicle.com/free/v47/i24/24a04601.htm

This past December, it looked like the name debate might exact a very specific price: $100-million. That was the amount that Ralph Engelstad, a Las Vegas casino owner, had promised to his alma mater, largely to build a luxurious new hockey arena that would bear his name. In a sharply worded letter addressed to the university's president, he threatened to abandon the half-completed project, which he was personally overseeing, if the university dropped the Fighting Sioux name.

President Charles E. Kupchella, following protests by students and tribal leaders, had formed a commission that had been investigating the naming controversy for five months. He planned to announce his decision after New Year's. But a day after he and members of the State Board of Higher Education received the letter, the board launched a pre-emptive strike, voting 8-0 to keep the name.

It has not helped public relations at the university that its benefactor has a troubled past in the area of racial sensitivity. In 1988, Nevada authorities discovered that Mr. Engelstad had held two parties on Hitler's birthday, and kept a trove of Nazi paraphernalia at his Imperial Palace hotel and casino. He was fined $1.5-million for damaging the reputation of the State of Nevada.

There are many studies as to whether this subject actually bothers Native Americans. The studies vary so much, that I don't trust any of them. All I know (from own experiences) the many Cherokees that I knew in North Carolina didn't give a damn. Most of them were, as a matter of fact, huge Washington Redskins fans. I'd be willing to bet that, if a true scientific survey were conducted, the finding would be that the people most offended by sports teams with Indian mascots, are actually up-tight politically correct white people.

Just to add on your story there AJ, I remember seeing Bobby Mitchell on an interview a while ago, and when he first came to the Redskins, he was at a dinner with Marshall, and they all got up to sing Dixie, and when Bobby Mitchell couldn't/wouldn't Marshall yelled "Bobby Mitchell......SING!"
