i'm a bit of a shut in theses days, except my weekly trips to mahar's public bar in albany,ny. this place has 20+ on tap, 10 cast beers, and 300+ bottles stocked. plus you get to earn shit on their tour.

this place rules. top 10 in the country, from what i hear. recently earned my mug, but still have to get imperial pints, but w/ a discount!

these days i'm loving belgians, austrians, barley wines, and us beers like rouge, victory, heavy weight, weyerbacher, stone, and doghead.

mahar's has no tv's, no liquor (unless you're cool w/ the bartenders- then they'll pull out the johnny powers), and are only open between 4-12, mon-sat.

plus they have shebeens, every so often on sundays- 12 beers you've never had; w/ limited admittance.

where's your spot?

my wife and I like Antone's in Cranford, NJ. It's simple, they serve good burgers, decent service, and they have 40+ beers on tap. It's not large enough to be intimidating and loud, but it's not a sweatbox. I'll probably be there tonight.

I've been known to stop by Finley's of Greene Street in Huntington from time to time and have one of their many many selections of file ale's, lagers, and more. Though m1 that place you go to sounds really cool.

It's a German/Irish deli slash bar.

I remeber going there for the first time about 8 years ago and being amazed by every type of beer they had. It was the first time i saw Spaten O'fest and Franziskaner on tap.

As an added bonus they serve about 10 types of liverwurst, german sausage.

People still go to bars? I would totally go to them if I had a ton of money and able to smoke inside. Bars are too fuckin expensive...

You need to make the trek to DC and visit Brickskeller (thebrickskeller.com). According to the Washington Post it is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as "the bar with the largest selection of commercially available beers."
quote:
'The last time I looked at the [inventory] spreadsheet, there were 1,032,' says managing partner Dave Alexander, with about a third of those coming from the United States. * />

'The last time I looked at the [inventory] spreadsheet, there were 1,032,' says managing partner Dave Alexander, with about a third of those coming from the United States. * />By the time Dave took over day-to-day operations in the '80s, there were more than 400 choices, mostly available in cans. Within a few years, the number had almost doubled. And when the craft brewing movement took off in the 1990s, Alexander began ordering more and more, pushing the selection over 1,000, and, he says, occasionally more than 1,200 different beers found their way into the inventory. Word began to spread around the world, and the Guinness Book of World Records came calling. When the stock was officially counted in January 2002, the total was 1,072 various brands and styles. (Alexander doesn't think they'll hold the top spot for long -- Brussels' Delirium Cafe has about 2,000 on its most recent list.)

They claim to have that many beers, but every time I go, they never have the Aass Bock. Bastards...

The pierogies there are damn good, though.

I am also a big fan of the Croxleys...

but even bigger fan of Bacchus in New Paltz... more beers than I could ever hope to drink... AND... after I complained that they had several Rogue beers (including the old crustacean barleywine) but NOT the Rogue Shakespeare Stout, they got a case just for me... can't beat that with a stick now can you?
