I am not a fan of Ariel Sharon. I'm  not a fan of the way that terrorist prick Arafat handled shit either. 40+ yrs people have been slaughtered on both sides over this shit. Ending the occupation of Gaza should have been done a long time ago in my opinion. I just can't stand Sharon. He seems like a very sneaky and evil person. But what do I know? That's just how I read the guy.  I am curious as to why he is singing a new tune these days? You just don't wake up one day after 38 yrs of occupying someone else's land and decide to "extend an olive branch" but hell yeah - any steps to ensure a safe and peaceful world is a good step. UYiI'm sure a lot of families and children were abruptly forced out of their Gaza homes back in 1967 as well.  At least today, unlike back then, the families ARE being compensated. feel sorry for them if they didn't knowingly move their families into
what is one step short of a war zone. They made themselves targets.
Doesn't mean they are justifiably targeted but they did what they did
and they knew the consequences and they knew something like this was
possible.

least safer than these settlements in primarily Palestinian lands.
Palestinians live in shit no matter where they are unless they choose

This move is a strategic move for Israel. Hamas officials have been
quoted as saying they will not stop attacks on Israelis despite the
pullout. Well, any future attacks could not be viewed as people
fighting occupation, it will be a terrorist attack by a group that will
be a major political party of a soverign state. In other words, an act
of war. If that happens, there will be no arguments when Sharon 
unleashes holy hell on them. 
 As much as i sympathize with the settlers being booted,
especially on the day all Jews fast in rememberance of the destruction
of Jerusalem and the Temples there, it was inevitable. It is very sad
that this action will result in a civil war amongst israeli's. The most
loyal zionistic Israelis were living in these territories, and at the
urging of the same government that is currently booting them. But now
they are being pushed by their own bretheren, soldiers that they had
ALL served with at one time or another. I also feel sorry for
the Arabic refugees living in the Gaza Strip. They have been abused by
their ow leadership. This move could have happened five years ago. Do
not forget that. Unfortunately, they never miss an opportunity to miss
an opportnity. If Arafat had accepted the generous ofer presented 
by Barak, this Intifada would have been avoided and peace would have
truly been possible. After the past five years, any trust germinated at
Oslo has been erased. Then, the two people could have lived together
somehow. Now we are faced with an unpopular unilateral withdrawal and
in the end, no one will win.Some settlers will get money from
their government to relocate. The hard liners who stay and fight the
useless battle against their own army will be physically removed, in
cages if needed, and left with nothing but harsh feelings against the
new residents of their homes and against their own people and
government. Sadly, we may be looking at the beginning of a new
generation of terrorist...Jewish terrorists who fight against their own
people. Baruch Goldstein, Yigal Amir and the soldier who killed all
those Arabs a few weeks ago were the tip of the iceberg. Once these
people stay only to get forcibly removed, they will become refugees
with nothing to lose. Fortunately, Israelis are very giving and will
help their bretheren the best they can and the remaining settlers will
get some sort of compensation.

I doubt there are a lot of parents of dead soilders out there that believe this war/their death -  was justified. I have sympathy for the Settlers who are being booted out of
homes they've lived in for 3 generations. Even though most of them are
far Right Wing Zionist nutbars, it cant be easy. And maybe this will make them
understand how the Palestinians felt when they were thrown out of their
homes after living there for countless generations. But I doubt it.
Though if there is a pullout both here and in the West Bank, as far as
I'm concerned the "Right of Return" issue is off the table,
permanently.

Yeah, there's alot of sentiment among Palistinian leaders that the west
bank is next. Though the Isreali's are taking a wait and see approach.
If all goes well in Gaza, the west Bank will be next, then a
Palestinian State after that. You can bet Bush would love to see
statehood by the time he leaves office. But it depends on alot going
well, which with these two lovebirds, is a stretch.

I agree totally H-Box. The only part that bugs me is that most
Americans seem to think the only foaming at the mouth nutbars are on
the Arab side. And while there certainly are plenty of Palestinian
extremists, I saw all the same shit from these Zionist psychos. And
oddly enough, the PM they elected who's doing this to them is probably
a war criminal. So much blame to go around. Thats why responsible
people in Israel want us to stay involved. Because they look around and
see how hopeless it is. And I agree, and thats why I want nothing to do
with any of them.

CyFy, where did you get that list from?  It reeks of being an e-mail forward, and if it is, half of the stuff on there is probably wrong or totally spun.And besides, what was the point?  Nobody's knocking Israel just as a country...just admiring that they're taking the first big step in hopefully an extended peace process because they can.  Both Israel and Palestine need younger generations of leaders to take over...the old guard on both sides are too bitter and war-scarred to truly step towards something new.What would you prefer, that nothing changes?

Just a few, (verifiable), facts mixed in with my two-bit opinions:The previous state of affairs for Israel's occupation and settlement of Gaza - 8,500 Israeli settlers in 21 settlements guarded by 50,000 IDF soldiers - was a bad investment for Israel. So Sharon simply made the decision that this was the time to cash in the polical spoils of war. He made the calculated trade of unilaterally giving up this monstrous money toilet in exchange for 1) the appearance of benevolence towards Palestinians and the Palestinian Authority, 2) the appearance of working with the "Roadmap to Peace" - which he hopes, (probably rightly), will be rewarded with a substantial increase in US aid - most likely much more than enough to cover the expense of compensating each of these settler families the $200,000 to $300,000 that each one is set to recieve for being removed, (many of whom are simply taking the money to set up in the West Bank, of course), 3) the appearance of actually giving up control of the West Bank - when actually it will be surrounded and most roads and key points in the territory will continue to be controlled by the Israeli Defense Forces, and, most importantly, 4) the ability to more easily hang on to the West Bank with all of its 240,000 settlers. Simply put: This is simply a tactical decision on Sharon's part to get rid of, (sort of), a costly illegally occupied territory in order to keep the rest of the illegally occupied territories. Still, it is an opportunity for a post-Arafat Palestinian Authority to manage the increased role it will have for cooperative security responsibilities in the territory, the peaceful resettlement of the evacuated areas, and continued progress on reigning in Hamas and Islamic Jihad. But Abbas will have to do this knowing that the world will be under the impression that Sharon pulled out of Gaza completely and out of the goodness of his heart. Point to Sharon.

From what I've been reading lately, the West Bank will be alot harder to do for a bunch of reasons. Alot more settlersSharon is up for re-election next yearWay deeper (Biblical) ties to the area "Judea and Sumeria"The settlers in the West Bank think God gave the land to the Jews, which I'd imagine is a little hard to negotiate with.The Paelestinians want to be able to travel freely from the Gaza to the West Bank (They cant go through Jordan?)   So
dont expect it to happen soon. But they'll still want to do it for the
same reasons. It's too expensive to secure the area, and it causes too
many problems for the rest of Israel.

It's too expensive to secure the area, and it causes too many problems for the rest of Israel.   Only thing I think we disagree on on this subject is that there is actually a will on the part of this Likud government to withdraw from West Bank.
