I know that some of you here like tow rite. Some have even been published. I'm finishing up this book I've been working on an I was wondering if anyone could give me some good publishers to send too. I plan to send it to as many as possible, but I really don't have a clue of what to do or who to send it too. Any help would be rgeatly appreciated.

Are you prepared for rejection? I mean I wish you all the luck in the world, but please don't be fooled into thinking you're gonna submit one book and be successful. Don't let the rejections sour your, and don't let it darken your soul. Persue your dreams no matter what people say.

I feel only in this way can you truly feel your life was a success. You may not achieve all your goals, but you died trying and that's the difference between winners and losers.

I am prepared to be rejected. I know I will be rejected. I'm just hoping that maybe, one of these publishers will see something good in what I write. See that I have some talent. I am confident that I could be published. I've seen a lot of books that I wonder why did this ever get to see a book store shelf. I know I can write. I know I'm good enough at that to be something. Even if it's not a best-seller, I know I could see my book next to all the others in Borders or Barnes and Nobel.

Publish America has a good track record with dealing with first time authors. (www.publishamerica.com) Give them a look. Good luck.

2005 Writer's Market. Use it. Love it. Its a way of life.

Anyway, its much easier to get your name out with short stories. I'd hold off on the novel until I get a short story out there (or two or three)

And don't expect to make a living at it, unless you pump out those mass market paperbacks like Tom Clancy or some other hack. I suppliment by teaching and a bunch of other jobs.

Hey Keith,

Is it poetry or prose? I know poetry books can be submitted by the author, but most prose stuff has to go through an agent. I was curious as to why this was and when I asked, most people said because agents don't want to work with poets. Again we get a raw deal. The best advice I can give you, check the publishing houses of books you like or you feel are similar to your style. Submit to those places and as was mentioned, steel yourself for the no's.

Unless you are really Billy Collins writing under nom de plume.

Unless you are really Billy Collins writing under nom de plume.

That's impossible, cause Billy Collins sucks. And his courses at Sarah Lawrence suck too.

however, my cousin used to get high with him.

Well, I have this novel, but I also have over a hundred works of poetry. I'm also working on a collection of short stories called 'Not Mein Kampf".

Ed McMahon always has such good things to say about Publisher's Clearinghouse.

quote:

That's impossible, cause Billy Collins sucks.

One of the most disappointing experiences in my life was seeing him read and then meeting him afterwards. He stands up there and pauses after every line, and all the trained sheep in the audience laugh. He might as well have an "Applause" sign that he can hit.

So anyway, the reading is over, and I brought a copy of a review that both he and I had poetry in. So I hand it to him, ask him to sign it, explain that we both had poems in it. He opens to the front page with pen in hand and this exchange follows:

BC: What's your name?

JD: Jack. (I figure he's just going to write "To Jack, Your Work is SO incomparable to mine. Quit now. Billy.)

BC: Your last name? (Annoyance)

JD: Oh, Doff. (He signs, then flips through the book for about 10 seconds.)

BC: Well, I guess I have a copy of this at home somewhere, I'll read your poem later. (Then he hands it back to me.)

Moral of the story: Never meet anyone you admire. They suck, but boy can he sell books. And don't expect Billy to be anywhere near as impressed that you are in the same book as him as you were.

I just find his work to be very trite. And yeah, he's an affectated snob too. I sat in on one of his classes and he made me nauseous with his pretention.
