I know topics like this have come up, but I can't find an already existing one. My comp has crashed. I've reformatted the drive several time, and when I try to get everything back on, it freezes up. I get XP installed, but before I can install everything else it freezes. Sometimes I can get a few things on (like service pack updates) and sometimes it freezes before I can put a single thing back on. I don't understand. When I've had issues in the past, I've had no problem getting everthing back in order.

HELP!!!!

Wow sounds like your having some serious problems. My advice is to scrap it and get yourself a new one.

I have two identical HD's (one is a little newer than the other). I think I'll try putting XP on the backup drive. I didn't even consider that the problem could be the drive.

edit: And yes... the fans are all working. I even tried reinstalling everything with the side off the case, and a giant fan blowing on the CPU. Still no luck.

I even tried reinstalling everything with the side off the case, and a giant fan blowing on the CPU. Still no luck.

My brothers computer was doing the same thing, I reformatted it with the restore CD, and it kept freezing up and shutting down. I noticed when i had the case open (installing wireless card) and blew a huge fan in it, it wasn't shutting down (he had no AC in his room and it was like 100 degrees out). He keeps a large fan blowing on it now and it doesn't freeze up anymore. His fans were working fine, but due to the high temp in his room, the fans weren't enough.

When you say it crashes, do you mean lock up or
shuts off completely? If it is locking up everytime I unfortunately
can't help you but if it the computer just shuts off it could be a
number of things. It could be that your CPU is overheating. If your
fans are working properly that is unlikely. Are the fans in your power
supply working? Your power supply could be overheating or just outright
failing.

its to late to backup if he reformatted.

it would easily be a virus coming onto your computer before you can patch the updates. what you need to do is install cirus software before you connect to the internet, or make sure you have a hardware firewall. the average infect time for an unprotected PC is like 7 minutes. most virus will cause shut down type stuff to happen.

I would try the new hard drive, you could always install the current drive as a backup later on and use it for data storage

I tried changing the hard drive, and that didn't do the trick. I know it's not anything getting to my comp via the internet, because it freezes before I even conntect it to the net. I can sometimes get it to work when I operate in safe mode, but I can't get it to boot in normal mode. GODDAMIT!!!!! What the HELL is wrong? I'm hating life right now!

Good point Nick. Also, what kind of a comp is it? White
Box, Dell? CPU speed/ram/HD size? What caused it not to
work in the first place - what was it doing before it died? Did
anybody diddle with the cpu and try to overclock or anything?
Both drives were fully formatted but that doesn't mean that there's still not a virus in the boot sector of one or both of them.
With the HD unattached, can you get to the BIOS and confirm everything looks ok there - cpu speed/ram?
Not to pry but is it a legit copy of XP? Home or Pro?

After more than a week in the shop, my comp has been diagnosed with having a bad motherboard. I just ordered a new one, but I have a question, if anyone knows the answer. When I install the new motherboard, will I have licensing issues with Windows XP? In other words, will XP think I'm trying to install it on a new computer? Only the board is being replaced. I'll have the same old CPU, hard drive, etc.

You say it, like it's a bad thing?!

From experience I believe your freezing issue may be hardware related. I suggest that you reformat and reinstall windows - only this time don't put the windows updates on until last. Install windows, and then immediately put on virus protection with the latest virus definitions added. After that work on getting the latest drivers for whatever hardware you have (soundcard, videocard, mouse, keyboard...). You may also want to check who makes your computers motherboard and find out if there are bios updates that need to be applied. If up this point nothing has frozen then it's most likely a driver/bios issue. The reason I suggest avoiding the windows update until last is because Windows updates can add features and add programs designed for systems with the latest drivers for the hardware. If you don't you can run into the problem you're having where the system freezes.

As far as system freezes other than drivers or bios updates, as JPMNick and others suggested it could be your hard drive or RAM as well, though if it worked before than you may want to check the ram if it somehow popped loose, and take it out and put it back in. Also check your videocard if it is somehow loose.
