Well, I caught "Rikki Don't Loose That Number" on XM 46 this evening.

I proceeded to the basement to dig out the "Pretzel Logic" and "Aja" CD's. Well, it has been a while but HOLY SHIT!! These guys are Fucking TIGHT!

It's midnight, and I am going to track through "Aja" again!! Maybe I am just tired. Maybe it was too many of Tall James' Bass Ale's, but I'm all over it!

Never got to see SD live, but did catch "The New York Rock and Soul Revue" at Jones Beach. KILLER SHOW! You all should buy/steal that album! One of the greatest live shows I have ever seen!

Enough with the ranting, back to the music!

SEEYU!!!

From a performance & production standpoint, Steely Dan is the highest of the highest level. I've probably spent 1000 bucks on all the vinyl, CD's, boxed-sets, re-issues, live records, DVD's, and most importantly... their kick ass solo records and side projects.

HOTTUB, if you can't find NIGHTFLY and/or KAMAKIRIAD (Fagen) or TRACKS OF WHACK (Becker) just let me know. I'd be happy to throw together a "best of".

I've always loved SD. I saw them once on their reunion tour about 10 years ago and it was great.

You know a band can still get it done when they put out an album 20 YEARS after the last one (2000's incredible "Two Against Nature") and it wins "Album Of The Year" at the Grammys! Their last album from a couple years ago, "Everything Must Go" is also great.

And if you love the classic "Reelin' In The Years", pick up the live album "Alive In America" for a terrific reworking of that tune!

I also agree that Fagan's 2 solo albums are must haves! As far as Becker's.... not so much IMO.

The cuervo gold
The fine columbian
Make tonight a wonderful thing-

This band is one of my top 10 favs of all time. Their production MAY be the best in the biz. I was watching a DVD of how they record songs and it was mindblowing. Fagan & Becker are so brilliant. They are SO good that I lock their cd's away and only break them out on special occasions. - like fine china.

They are the kind of band you can listen to over & over and hear/pick out something new everytime.

Every drum track is crystal clear. I love that tight crisp production -

Good Call.

Die hard fans did not really dig their live ablum that was released a few years back, I thought it was top notch and maybe one of the best live albums of all time.

Cindy Sheehan on Fri night's cosmic circus 8/26

Maybe it was too many of Tall James' Bass Ale's

Dammit, I was wondering where they all went to. I had to resort to drinking cooking sherry because there was nothing left in the house.

I have been a die hard SD fan since high school, back when dinosaurs walked the earth.

Uh oh.

I think we need to start two new threads. One dedicated to the sheer powerpop greatness of Cheap Trick and another dedicated to (my all time ALL TIME fave) Butch Walker and The Marvelous 3. That dude embodies everything great about Elvis Costello, Rick Ocasik, Robin Zander, and Freddie Mercury. His solo records don't really "rock" but, they are both great little records in their own right. READYSEX GO by the M3 really SHOULD'VE been the biggest arena-rock record in the world. What a shame that, for the most part, nobody knew who they were.

EDIT:

Here is the Marvelous 3 version of "Reelin' In The Years" and Wilcos version of "Any Major Dude..." as mentioned earlier. http://s34.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=1HHZUJ7QJ219332ZZ8U99QCZ3Q

"Jam out with your clam out"

I'm the biggest power pop devotee around, and Cheap Trick have NOTHING on the better power pop bands out there. Like I said, they put out ONE great power pop song (and I'll readily admit it's one of the greats, probably top 3 in my book with "Go All The Way" and "September Gurls"), "I Want You To Want Me," and that's it. Everything else sounds like typically overproduced soulless 80's pap...even the stuff they put out in the 70's! I'll take a guy like, say, Marshall Crenshaw as a standard for power pop over Cheap Trick ANY day.

I absolutely love this band.

I got a lot of looks from other kids growing up, when I would take out my Doggystyle CD and pop in Steely Dan box set cd #2.

My favorites are Black Friday, Bodistava(sp), and the song that contains this lyric is my absolute favorite...

"I cried when I wrote this song,
Sue me if I played it wrong,
This brother is free,
I'll be where I want to be"

Steely Dan songs contain some of my favorite guitar solos of all time, including "Peg", "Rikki Don't Lose That Number", and "Reelin' In The Years", and Fagen's keyboard may be one of the coolest sounds in rock history. I guess they're similar to the post-1966 Beatles in that they chose to stay in the studio and make "perfect" records rather than play live during the peak of their popularity.

Strange boys, Fagen and Becker.

I love Steely Dan and of course Donald Fagan and I will no doubt be spending the bucks on this set.

That being said, it is things like this that helps people justify downloading music illegally.

I bought all three of the cds when they first came out. All of them were produced in the "digital age" but now they have to remastered and packaged with extra songs. Why couldn't they just master them this way the first time ?. Why didn't they fill the discs with the extra songs then ? Why can't they have a seperate package with just the videos and the extra tracks ?

I've seen Steely Dan seven times. Always amazing. My stupid board name and my personal nickname came from Steely Dan. When I was two or three years old I would always have my dad put Countdown to Ecstasy on the turntable, and listen to the album over and over again with headphones on. My dad would put on the album to put me to sleep at night. For as long as I can remember he has called me Razor Boy. That it was a song with undertones of drug abuse never seemed to bother him.

Damn you, Tele7!! I spent 5 minutes looking at your work, then was suddenly pulled into a 2 hour YouTube- Steely Dan vaccuum.

The good part is, you brought me back to one of the greatest days I have ever spent on this planet.

We woke up bright and early. Grabbed a few Taylor Ham, Egg and Cheeses. Packed the cooler and headed out to Southampton. Got a great spot on the beach off Dune Rd. The waves were great. The beers were cold. The conversation was brilliant. We headed down the Montauk Highway to get a few Lobster Rolls at "Lunch". Outstanding.

"Oh, it's getting late." We grabbed a few more beers, and headed out to Jones Beach. We all had tickets for

The New York Rock and Soul Revue!!

What a spectacular way to end a great day at the beach. I had seen over a hundred shows before this night. Nothing could beat it! Still one of my top shows EVER!!

Phoebe Snow, Boz Scaggs, Michael MacDonald, The Rascals, and a Steely Dan Best of,

Including "Chain Lightning," "Josie," "Green Earrings," "Black Friday" and "Pretzel Logic."

Here's Pretzel Logic with Michael MacDonald.

Drew Zingg kicks some major ass here!

(Get back to work Tele)

Sounds like the perfect day Tub. For me it was seeing Queen in 1982. We met the band at a Crazy Eddie opening on 57th and caught the show that night. Everything just seemed to fall into place. The perfect day.

I bought the Rock And Soul CD soon after it came out. I'll have to dust it off over the weekend and give it another listen. I'm not familiar with Drew Zingg, but really love his playing and tone. Hearing guys like that makes me want to either put my guitar back in the case, ...or just work harder at it. Not sure yet.

...and 5 minutes?!?! I deserve at least 7.

Little late to the party here but I'm a big Steely Dan fan as well. I'd heard a decent amount of there stuff before but then two friends of mine in college were really into them and I've really dug them since. I was thinking today what my favorite album is and even though there are better songs on other albums, I'd have to go Katy Lied. Has some great tunes and is really well rounded. Though I'm also a huge Gaucho (which I know may be the unpopular view) and Aja fan. Saw them in concert a few years ago and really dug them.

Steely Dan has yet to jump the shark and they never had a "bad phase" (Prince... I'm looking in your direction!)

Their new stuff is stellar.
If you've never heard "Gaslight Abbie" from TWO AGAINST NATURE, you're missin' out.

Yeah, I'm going to like it here. Outside of the killjoy that posted yesterday, this thread has one stellar find after another.

Thanks!

She thinks I'm crazy
But I'm just growing old....

Might be my favorite all time set of lyrics in any song ever. Like the one guy wrote, it has so much more meaning in my life now.

Seen Steely Dan at least 10 times, I hope to see them every day until I die. Citizen Dan is in constant rotation on probably every CD player in the house, too. Thankfully I'm surrounded by understanding people.

Steely fan since day one. Gaucho came out my freshman year in college and I immediately bought the complete collection of Steely Dan.

Went to see them live when they got back together in 1993. Have seen them three more times since then.

Just got my tickets for the July 29th show at the Beacon. They're dong four shows at the Beacon, the first three are classic album shows where they will play an entire album (plus other songs). The first night is Aja which I wanted but they were out of tickets. The second night is Gaucho, which I'm going to, and the third night is The Royal Scam. The fourth night is internet request night. If you get a ticket to that show you get a website to go to and request songs.

Can't wait!

I saw that in the paper
Theyre capitalizing on Van Morisons gimmick he did with Astral Weeks

Sounds like a good show. I think I would try for third night though Royal Scam

Wow... I don't know which one of the two shows you have I would pick. I really like Gaucho, but I think I'd lean toward The Royal Scam - Sign In Stranger was always a favorite tune of mine.

Sounds like they'll be fun shows. Be sure to post a review.

I'm going to the Borgata show and it doesn't look like a special set night or anything but I don't care

If they ever toured again with Michael McDonald I'd probably quit my job and tour with them
