The 2 presidents are talking now...They had a briefing about 30 minutes ago with the heads of all the relief agencies tell us they were prepared and are on site doing thier part, then a note from the N.O mayor says the situation at the civic Center is in crisis or somethig like that, and that theres 15-20,000 people there with no food, water or sanitation and there wont be enough buses to get them out. Nevermind the fact that the guard is standing by because its not safe to go in and the fact that the buses wont go in because its not safe. How the fuck is the guard not going in because theres reports of people with guns? I hear there about 6,000 standing by until its safe to go in.....this make sense to anybody? How is the situation going to be anything but worse by waiting? theyll be more violent and desperate the longer they wait. In any case the mayors message finally said they are now allowing people to walk up the freeway to some location for relief. Basically shes saying "nobodies coming to help you, so just start walking until you find a place that isnt destroyed".

Ya know , this is pissing me off. Around Jan of 02' I found a job that was with some "Quick reaction disaster relief" thing that was created after 9-11 incase of another attack. the idea was that we would all deploy to any part of the country should we be needed. I cant find anything like this online now, maybe one of you knows about this. I operate heavy equipment like dozers, excavators, loaders etc. If you have any idea what company or orginization handles this let me in on it. Thanks.

They are shooting at helicopters trying to land on the hospitals as well. One of the reports said the shooter was trying to jack the helicopter - telling the pilot to evac him before the patients

<p><strong>NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (CNN) -- New Orleans' Charity Hospital halted efforts to evacuate its patients after it came under sniper fire, according to Dr. Tyler Curiel, who witnessed the incidents. </strong></p><p>The attack came as New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin issued "a desperate SOS" for the thousands of people stranded in and around the city's convention center with no food or water and fading hope.</p><p>Curiel and his National Guard escorts, were returning to the hospital after dropping off patients at nearby Tulane Medical Center, when someone started shooting at their convoy of Humvees.</p><p>"We were coming in from a parking deck at Tulane Medical Center, and a guy in a white shirt started firing at us," Curiel said. "The National Guard (troops), wearing flak jackets, tried to get a bead on this guy. "</p><p>The incident happened around 11:30 a.m. (12:30 p.m. ET). About an hour later, another gunman opened fire at the back of Charity Hospital.</p><p>"We got back to Charity Hospital with with food from Tulane and we said, 'OK the snipers are behind us, let's move on,'" Curiel said. "We started loading patients (for transport) and 20 minutes later, shots rang out."</p><p>The National Guard soldiers told staff to get away from the windows, and evacuations were halted.</p>

Its just another case of the black man being lazy. Waiting for the white man to take care of them and support them. Seriously though, they would have rescued white people by now but thats because white people wouldnt be shooting at vehicles rescuing people. My disgust comes from the fact that theyd rather wait then to just be prepared to return fire and get the non scumbags out. I mean you cant just leave them because youre scared theyll kill you.

<p><a target="blank" href="http://www.nola.com/newslogs/breakingtp/index.ssf?/mtlogs/nola_Times-Picayune/archives/2005_09.html#075833"><font size="2" face="arial,sans-serif">House Speaker: Rebuilding N.O. doesn't make sense</font></a></p><font size="2" face="arial,sans-serif"><br />
<br />
WASHINGTON - House Speaker Dennis Hastert dropped a bombshell on
flood-ravaged New Orleans on Thursday by suggesting that it isn’t
sensible to rebuild the city.<br />
<br />
"It doesn't make sense to me," Hastert told the Daily Herald in
suburban Chicago in editions published today. "And it's a question that
certainly we should ask."<br />
<br />
Hastert's comments came as Congress cut short its summer recess and
raced back to Washington to take up an emergency aid package expected
to be $10 billion or more. Details of the legislation are still
emerging, but it is expected to target critical items such as buses to
evacuate the city, reinforcing existing flood protection and providing
food and shelter for a growing population of refugees.<br />
<br />
The Illinois Republican’s comments drew an immediate rebuke from Louisiana officials.<br />
<br />
“That’s like saying we should shut down Los Angeles because it’s built
in an earthquake zone,” former Sen. John Breaux, D-La., said. “Or like
saying that after the Great Chicago fire of 1871, the U.S. government
should have just abandoned the city.” <br />
<br />
Hastert said that he supports an emergency bailout, but raised
questions about a long-term rebuilding effort. As the most powerful
voice in the Republican-controlled House, Hastert is in a position to
block any legislation that he opposes.<br />
<br />
"We help replace, we help relieve disaster," Hastert said. "But I think
federal insurance and everything that goes along with it... we ought to
take a second look at that."<br />
<br />
The speaker’s comments were in stark contrast to those delivered by
President Bush during an appearance this morning on ABC’s “Good Morning
America.”<br />
<br />
“I want the people of New Orleans to know that after rescuing them and
stabilizing the situation, there will be plans in place to help this
great city get back on its feet,” Bush said. “There is no doubt in my
mind that New Orleans is going to rise up again as a great city.”<br />
<br />
Insurance industry executives estimated that claims from the storm
could range up to $19 billion. Rebuilding the city, which is more than
80 percent submerged, could cost tens of billions of dollars more,
experts projected.<br />
<br />

<p>Not that I am immune from the horror and devistation of this unfortunate diaster, but my heart really goes out to the good people who are now risking their lives to help these people. <br />For any person who willingly sets themselves down to live in an area that anyone in todays world, where access to educational material about just this type of event occuring and still deciding to settle down and have a family there is a travesty in and of itself. To me, its like people who live on the side of an active volcano or in a tectonically unstable area, or an idiot who decides to pitch his tent on railroad tracks. Im sure I will be called names for saying this, but when its you and you have a family and your responsibility is to keep them safe, you have to have a moral obligation to do the right, intelligent thing.<br /><br />If the US government allows and supports the rebuilding if this city just as it was, they will have the guilt of all these deaths on their hands all over again the next time a hurricane comes along.<br /><br />I say we should pull all the troops out of Iraq and send them there to just bury this city completely and start over inland on higher ground.</p><p>I am sending my support financially to the relief workers.</p>

When we responded to the tsunami with less money then they thought we should have gave, they were outraged. its been a few days of this now, and really no one seems to be stepping up. Granted, we have not publicly asked for help and their may be some unwritten protocol for how to handle this. but i am sure some of those countries have some equipment we can use</p>

<p>Just because we're not a 3rd world nation, doesn't mean we can't use some extra help. Human suffering is human suffering. Even if you're not Indonesian.</p><p>OK, countries most damaged by the tsunami...some of the poorest on Earth. They had NO OTHER OPTIONS except outside health. This hurricaine hit a city in the richest country on the planet. I'm sure if we ask for help, we'd get it, but quite frankly, we don't need it. Why should we just expect outside donations and resources when we're not even close to needing them? Is a "it makes me feel better" victory really needed when the added resources will probably just go to waste?</p><p><font color="#ffffff"><br /></font></p>

I'm kinda embarrassed that a Japanese company's
donation is dwarfing a bunch of American company's contributions, some
of which are larger companies and some of which are oil companies(who

<p><font size="1">I'm amazed it actually took 5 days for people to start blaming the President.... </font></p><p>Well, we were hoping that he might get something right but...</p><p>There is plenty of blame to go around. New Orleans' troubles are entirely man-made - if the levees were properly maintained and reinforced there would be no crisis in the city now. Local, state and the federal government all fucked up on that. </p><p>The devastation caused by the storm surge in rural LA, Mississippi and Alabama qualifies as a natural disaster but one that was entirely predictable given the warnings. The inability to prepare and have a response ready to hit the ground running is just a complete failure of leadership by the President and his administration. Even the usually docile press corps is waking up: Anderson Cooper on CNN was practically yelling at the (Democratic in name only) chick senator from Louisiana for praising Bush and Frist saying that he saw rats eating a dead woman in the road, that's how well the government is doing; and this editorial from a Republican newspaper in Biloxi, MS <font size="1">saying there is an AFB within sight of the devastation where the troops are playing basketball.</font></p><p><font size="1"><a href="http://www.sunherald.com/mld/sunherald/news/special_packages/hurricane_katrina/12526270.htm">http://www.sunherald.com/mld/sunherald/news/special_packages/hurricane_katrina/12526270.htm</a></font></p><p><font size="1">This apparent lack of planning and concern for results is entirely consistent with our quagmire in Iraq. When he's not making me blind with rage of what I believe to be remarkedly stupid policy decisions I see W as a guy who is simply in way over his head, who because he was always insulated from the results of his early failures, has a too healthy self-regard and a taste for rolling big dice. And somebody else always has to pay the price when he's wrong. OK, rant over.</font></p><p><font size="1">One other point - I never thought Giuliani could ever get elected President, but if this relief effort keeps going this badly I think he might get nominated by both parties just to get somebody in office who has demonstrated he could handle a problem well.</font></p><p><font size="1">PSA - I was going to suggest we hire that banner plane guy again to welcome R&F back but I think the money would be better spent going to the relief effort and I gave my fistful of cash to the Red Cross.</font></p>

We got through the hurricane about as expected considering where it hit, and by Monday night has assessed our damages, and were making plans for recovery, but every day SINCE the hurricane has been progressively worse than the actual day of the Hurricane itself.</p><p>We're just getting power, and still have over a hundred thousand homes without it, and very few gas stations open that have both the gas, and the power to dispense it, and now we're being flooded with people from the West AND East, which I still can't figure out. Trucks are arriving with supplies for the estimated number of people in this area that were affected, and they're not even close to being enough due to the increased demand. BamaNation has posted before about how overwhelming and ridiculous the amount of relief and supplies that are normally brought in, and already by yesterday they were out of MRE's (possibly because of what Bama mentioned about them being forced on every vehicle that comes through whether they were asked for or not).</p><p>We were at half of our usual workforce today, and half of those were not able to come to work because they were either out of gas, or wouldn't have enough to make it here and back. This area has it's own problems caused by the storm, but people are driving to the first place that has power on, and stopping here and taking their frustrations out on us. We've been watching the road rage and fights at the gas stations for the last two days, and there's no hope in sight. There is not a vacant hotel room anywhere in the area, and the demand for gas in this area has more than doubled or tripled, and each day the panic spreads more and more, and hoarding has begun, and people are spending the majority of their day calling to find who has gas, and waiting in line for it. I see truck after truck with beds full of gas cans, some with 55 gallon drums, so now the daily limit is $20 per vehicle, which at the rates now is a little more than 7 gallons or so, and it takes me about that much to go back home, and begin my search again the next day.</p><p>I usually couldn't give a shit about the hotel rooms except that it's put a stop to our customers and FAA inspectors being able to stay in this area, and we're not the only business affected by this. I know that sounds selfish, but the economic impact to this area is bad enough, if smaller companies like ours start going under, the domino affect will continue to grow.</p><p>Bottom line... we were SOOOoooo much luckier than those in New Orleans and Mississippi, and my heart goes out to those people, and I'd gladly give anything I can spare to help THESE people out...</p><p>...my frustration is with those that are traveling in to "sight see" the damage, and adding to the traffic, shortages, causing delays in getting needed supplies to those who really needed... but most of all I'm worried how long this gas panic will continue, and how far people will spread like locusts draining each small community, and travelling further and further to get it each time, using more gas getting there and back, and just how lo

A fed-up Louisiana Gov. "They have M-16s, and they're locked and loaded ... I have one message for these hoodlums: These troops know how to shoot and kill, and they are more than willing to do so if necessary, and I expect they will." </p><p>And I read another article that said that New Orleans cops have turned in their badges saying that since they lost everything anyway, they didn't feel like losing their lives to these armed gangs.</p><p>Jesus Christ -- New Orleans has turned into Haiti.</p>

Stop spinning this so absurdly...nobody is blaming Bush for the hurricaine or its effects and you know it. His lack of ANY kind of significant response to the American people in the face of a massive tragedy is laughable. His staff's fear of him making an ass of himself on TV or during press conferences has kept him off the air for most of the last 5 days EVEN THOUGH A MAJOR CITY HAS ESSENTIALLY BEEN WIPED OFF THE MAP. I'm not expecting him to singlehandedly go down there and rebuild the levees...just get on TV on a regular basis during this and TALK TO THE AMERICAN PUBLIC YOU CLAIM TO WORK FOR. Lead us, goddammit! Keep us informed! Screw political difference...be my fucking president!

<p>There is absolutely no way that Katrina was Bush's fault and I do not think that there was any pre-emptive action he could of taken....but there is also absolutely no way any one can tell me that the Federal Gov't is handling this even remotely well. So they are overwhelmed, tough fucking shit...Citizens are aloud to be overwhelmed, our government is in place to be the rock that is able to handle any situation....there is no fucking way being overwhelmed can ever be an excuse that is suitable enough for the Federal Gov't. If the Supreme court is on there fucking six month vacation in their Goddamn mansion they should have been back 5 days ago. They are just talking now about cutting these fucking dinosaurs' vacations short now. </p><p>Infrastructure is not secure enough to land helicopters and get these poor people out of there??? Bull shit, this is the same Goddamn gov't who landed Blackhawks in the middle of militant Somalia for some bull shit mission. They can't land choppers and get soldiers down among starving americans that are lying in their own shit starving to death with barely enough energy to stand...that is too risky? I am looking out of my office as we speak on to Ground Zero and I remember how fast they got here to help us, and judging by how the gov't handled that day shows me that this is not a group that is easily overwhelmed...this is going to be the biggest black eye on Bush's presidency. He does have 3 years left though, he may be able to top it. </p><p>So far, this has been handed dreadfully and the deaths will be far greater than 9/11....the difference is none of those lives could have been saved. </p>

And he came off the doggone chopper, and he started cussing and people started moving. And he's getting some stuff done. And this is a major, major, major deal."</p><p>"we authorized $8 billion to go to Iraq lickety-quick. After 9/11, we gave the president unprecedented powers lickety-quick to take care of New York and other places. Now, you mean to tell me that a place where most of your oil is coming through, a place that is so unique when you mention New Orleans anywhere around the world, everybody's eyes light up -- you mean to tell me that a place where you probably have thousands of people that have died and thousands more that are dying every day, that we can't figure out a way to authorize the resources that we need? Come on, man."</p><p>"I don't know whether it's the governor's problem. I don't know whether it's the president's problem, but somebody needs to get their ass on a plane and sit down, the two of them, and figure this out right now."</p><p>"I don't want to see anybody do anymore goddamn press conferences. Put a moratorium on press conferences. Don't do another press conference until the resources are in this city. And then come down to this city and stand with us when there are military trucks and troops that we can't even count.Don't tell me 40,000 people are coming here. They're not here. It's too doggone late. Now get off your asses and do something, and let's fix the biggest goddamn crisis in the history of this country."</p>

CNN had a followup with the man, Hardy Jackson who had the tearjerking story on BBC news about how he lost his grip on his wife after water tore through his home, and her last words were to take care of the kids (If anyone hadn't seen the original interview its on the bbc.co.uk site, under news- incredibly heartbreaking). Jimbeam...you are a complete fucking idiot. Get your Goddamn defend lil' W blinders off. The mayor gave adequate warning to get out. Unfortunately though for the poor people in NO when you are supporting a five or six people on a combined household income of $26K/year and you don't have a car....it isn't that easy to get anywhere. Most of these people don't even have checking accounts. And unfortunately the state and/or federal Gov't can not going spending hundreds of millions evacuating and putting up entire cities every time a hurricane is suopposed to hit. Because 999 out of a thousand times this is not the result. And if we did spend the money trying to get the people out before every hurricane, you are theexact type of moron who would be bitching about what a waste of tax payers' money it is every time their is a false alarm.

<p>First of all...I think John Kerry was a terrible candidate. And I did vote for Bush and I am a republican. But I am not a fucking idiot. Both the state and federal gov'ts have handled this awfully. But the state does not have deep enough pockets and/or enough manpower to handle a situation like this...It is the Federal gov'ts responsibility to realize when a state is in over its head and intervene. That is why we have a federal gov't. It isn't fifty states for themselves. And know I am not saying you should give these people higher salaries and make trhem better prepared, I am not a communist...but fact is poverty is a part of our country and you have to at least try to comprehend the position of these people and why it was next to impossible to get out...you can't just say, "dumbasses should've gotten out their fault". They have lived through numerous hurricane warnings before and they can not just eveacuate every time there is a warning...THAT COST MONEY!!! they don't have any.</p><p>You have to learn that it is okay to admit that the guy you voted for is not infallible and does make bad decisions at times and does drop the ball....you are allowed to do that.</p>

But bringing up ol' Rudy illustrates the point perfectly most here are trying to make...Giuliani was on TV as much as possible, keeping people informed and calm, generally acting like a leader. That's what people are expecting Bush to do! Show that he's leading, even if it's just speaking to the American people directly and repeatedly on TV...he's not doing anything even close to that! He's a non-entity in his own country's biggest natural diaster in over a century. I really can't make it anymore clear than that, but please, spin away.

<p>Here's the difference between a mayor and a governor :</p><p>Gov. Kathleen Blanco, who like Nagin is a Democrat, was less confrontational than the mayor.</p><p>"When the system goes down, this is pretty much what you get," she said on CBS' "The Early Show." "We don't get into the blame game. We just work with what we got."</p><p>Here is the interesting write up on Nagin from Wipedia :</p><p><strong>Clarence Ray Nagin</strong> (born <a title="June 11" href="http://www.ronfez.net/wiki/June_11">June 11</a>, <a title="1956" href="http://www.ronfez.net/wiki/1956">1956</a> in <a title="New Orleans" href="http://www.ronfez.net/wiki/New_Orleans">New Orleans</a>) is the <a title="Mayor" href="http://www.ronfez.net/wiki/Mayor">Mayor</a> of <a title="New Orleans" href="http://www.ronfez.net/wiki/New_Orleans">New Orleans</a>, <a title="Louisiana" href="http://www.ronfez.net/wiki/Louisiana">Louisiana</a>. He was elected in May <a title="2002" href="http://www.ronfez.net/wiki/2002">2002</a>, succeeding <a title="Marc Morial" href="http://www.ronfez.net/wiki/Marc_Morial">Marc Morial</a></p><p>Before his election, Nagin was a member of the <a title="United States Republican Party" href="http://www.ronfez.net/wiki/United_States_Republican_Party">United States Republican Party</a> and had little political experience; he was a vice president and general manager at Cox Communications, a <a title="Cable" href="http://www.ronfez.net/wiki/Cable">cable</a> communications company and subsidiary of <a title="Cox Enterprises" href="http://www.ronfez.net/wiki/Cox_Enterprises">Cox Enterprises</a>. Nagin did give donations periodically to candidates, namely President <a title="George W. Bush" href="http://www.ronfez.net/wiki/George_W._Bush">George W. Bush</a> and former Republican U.S. Representative <a title="Billy Tauzin" href="http://www.ronfez.net/wiki/Billy_Tauzin">Billy Tauzin</a> in 1999 and 2000, as well as to Democratic U.S. Senators <a title="John Breaux" href="http://www.ronfez.net/wiki/John_Breaux">John Breaux</a> and <a title="J. Bennett Johnston" href="http://www.ronfez.net/wiki/J._Bennett_Johnston">J. Bennett Johnston</a> earlier in the decade.</p><p>Days before filing for the <a title="New Orleans" href="http://www.ronfez.net/wiki/New_Orleans">New Orleans</a> Mayoral race in February 2002, Nagin switched his party registration to the <a title="United States Democratic Party" href="http://www.ronfez.net/wiki/United_States_Democratic_Party">United States Democratic Party</a>, presumably in order to improve his chances of winning the race in heavily Democratic <a title="New Orleans" href="http://www.ronfez.net/wiki/New_Orleans">New Orleans</a>. Shortly before the primary election, an endorsement praising Nagin as a reformer by <a title="Gambit Magazine" href="http://www.ronfez.net/w/index.php?title=Gambit_Magazine&action=edit">Gambit Magazine</a> gave him crucial momentum that would carry through for the primary election and runoff. In the first round of the crowded mayoral election in February 2002, Nagin received first place with 29% of the vote, against such opponents as Police Chief <a title="Richard Pennington" href="http://www.ronfez.net/w/index.php?title=Richard_Pennington&action=edit">Richard Pennington</a>, State Senator <a title="Paulette Irons" href="http://www.ronfez.net/w/index.php?title=Paulette_Irons&action=edit">Paulette Irons</a>, City Councilman <a title="Troy Carter" href="http://www.ronfez.net/w/index.php?title=Troy_Carter&action=edit">Troy Carter</a> and others. In the runoff with Pennington in May 2002, Nagin won with 59% of the vote. His campaign was largely self-financed.</p><p>Shortly after taking office, Nagin launched an anti-corruption campaign within city government, which included crackdowns on the city's Taxicab Bureau and Utilities Department. Nagin also made a controversial endorsement of current Republican U.S. Representative <a title="Bobby Jindal" href="http://www.ronfez.net/wiki/Bobby_Jindal">Bobby Jindal</a> in the 2003 Louisiana Gubernatorial Runoff over current Demo

He said they found out there were people (20,000 ish) at the convention center on THURSDAY. She like, we had them on T.V before you even knew thare were 20,000 people there, are you kiddin me dawg??? All I know is that the top highest ranking ....10 guys and gals in FEMA should just be fired immediatly. </p><p>As far as bush goes, I mean he's just as bad as he could be. Mojo, you want him to talk to you more often? dont you want to throw something at the tv when he tells you stuff that everybody knows aint true and everytime you <em>know</em> hes lying? I actually dont want to hear from him, I want to hear from that mayor again. </p><p> </p><p>The hurricane isnt his fault, but the recovery is %100 his fualt. How disgusted would we be is terrorist blew the levee and for at least 4-5 days we had citizens starving to death, dehydrated, raping, murdering, shooting at police, police "quitting" everyday, and all this without any bad guys organized to do harm to us as there would be if terrorist were to blame for it. It not his fault it rained, its his fault that 4 years later we aint got shit in order to help in case of a disaster, terrorist cause or otherwise.</p>

<span class="body-content"><p><strong><span class="dateline">TALLAHASSEE</span><span class="dateline-separator"> - </span></strong>Hundreds
of Katrina evacuees who fled to Tallahassee seeking refuge from the
storm have been politely told by their hotels and motels to leave this
weekend to make room for a football game: FSU vs. Miami.</p>
<p>Hotel space is traditionally scarce any time the Florida State
Seminoles take on the University of Miami Hurricanes, one of the
choicest tickets on the college football schedule.</p>
<p>But with hotels packed with families from Louisiana and Mississippi,
and room space booked for Monday's game for months, hotel operators say
they are trying to accommodate the evacuees but have no choice but to
nudge them out.</p>
<p>''We have to let them know what's going on in town and they're going
to have to leave,'' said Angie Rayman, manager at the Howard Johnson.
``Many of them are trying to get closer to home anyway.''</p>
<p><strong>HAPPENED AFTER OPAL</strong></p>
<p>Local emergency officials say it's happened before, when the
football schedule displaced Panhandle evacuees who fled from Hurricane
Opal in 1995.</p>
<p>This time, the American Red Cross is ready to help. It will open as
many as six shelters if needed -- five churches and a senior center --
and volunteers are plentiful.</p>
<p>''It only takes 20 minutes to get a shelter up and running,'' said
Faye Rioux, shelter manager for the Leon County chapter of the American
Red Cross. ``As long as there's a need, we'll be there.''</p>
<p>But for some of the evacuees, being displaced for a football game is just one more setback in a week of suffering.</p>
<p>''I'm disappointed because I wanted to stay about three weeks,''
said James Payne, 63, of West Bank, La. He found the Holiday Inn
Capital View on the Web and drove 19 hours to get there Sunday.</p>
<p>His wife, who is in a wheelchair, and his sick mother-in-law
weathered the ride, but it was a strain on them all, and on his weak
heart. He has no idea whether his house is still standing and expects
it will be weeks before he heads home.</p>
<p>''I'm not saying anything bad,'' he said. ``It's all kind of hard. But we can't stand in the road.''</p>
<p>The staff at the Marriott Courtyard told the Hall family of Gulfport, Miss., that they have to leave by Friday night.</p>
<p>Reagan Hall, a Gulfport dentist, made arrangements to relocate to a
Destin hotel, and to meet other relatives there, but they'll have to
find another kennel for their three dogs.</p>
<p>''I'd be real happy about it if they gave me [game] tickets,'' he said. His wife said she's ready to leave.</p>
<p>''I'm getting antsy to get back anyway,'' said Joy Hall, holding
their 4-month-old son, Dawson. The family's dental office is still
standing, just four blocks from the battered beach, but they have no
idea about their home.</p>
<p>The message was the same from hotel officials at the Doubletree, the Best Western and Homewood Suites.</p>
<p>The Ramada Inn was the exception. Hotel staff saw the conflict
coming last week. They are housing the UM football team but wanted to
accommodate everyone, said Rochell Araiza, director of sales.</p>
<p>So the staff called around, found some Miami residents who didn't
need their rooms and persuaded others to reschedule for another time.</p>
<p>The result: They have enough rooms, with a few to spare, for the
evacuees and their pets ''to stay as long as they need to,'' she said.</p>
<p><strong>FSU DONATION DRIVE</strong></p>
<p>FSU officials said they were not aware of the hotel crunch but
separately planned a response to the hurricane. FSU President T.K.
Wetherell asked football fans to come to Doak Campbell stadium ready to
make cash donations for the American Red Cross to help victims.</p>
<p>''If we join together and use this game as an opportunity to mount a
relief effort, we can make a real difference in the lives of people who
are truly suffering,'' he said.</p><p><a href="http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/news/na

Kerry's response, had he been President, would more than likely not have been much better than Bush's, but I'm pretty certain it couldn't have been worse. It's like they learn nothing - after the delay after the Tsunami you would have thought someone would have been awake at the wheel and put the President out there looking like a fucking leader. Say what you will, but Clinton would have been out there from the start - he has a way of connecting to the poor that few politicians have really mastered. It might have been lip service, and he might have been saddled with the same govt. nightmare, but he would have been there leading and supporting. SAME THING WITH RUDY. As the BBC put it, these are abandoned people in an abandoned city.

"no coordination of rescue relief, no nothing. He said himself today that the response by our government was bad. -- Right FEMA the group responsible for handling emergency situations has handled it poorly." You mean the FEMA that had it's budget destroyed by Bush and his admin or the money cut from the levee project back in 2003? Hell, some of the engineers stayed on for free knowing how important the project was. Bush also appointed the head of FEMA who was fired from his last job due to mismanagement. Good appointment again. They were trying to privatize FEMA as well. Fuck Bush!

Huge mistake putting FEMA under "Homeland Security" where it was prone to be plundered. And it's not like there weren't saying that it wasn't a mistake at the time! ~ THIS falls right at Bush's feet. Even neo-cons like Charles Krauthammer, who has suckled at Bush's teet from day one on pretty much everything, is coming out laying much of the blame with FEMA on the President.<div><br /></div><div> <img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v64/curtoid/surf.jpg" border="0" /></div>

I don't have much of a problem with how the news is
covering this. I mean, for once, they are calling officials out on
their bullshit and demanding action. They are doing what they are
supposed to for a change.<br />

i understand that, it just pisses me off. First of all, stupid people
will see this and think it's still going on now, leading to even more
insanity. Also, I just can't get passed how it could be so fake. These
people can't even believe the shit they are talking about, so it really
makes you wonder who the hell could sensationalize something like this
over and over for the sake of money that they wont even see. <br />

I don't see it as a ratings ploy or anything. I may

[color=navy]<font size="2">So are they supposed to show only live or that
day's footage? They are showing plenty of current events. I saw the
National guard convoy riding in countless times today. Of course they
will show the most sensational events. How many times did they the

direct comparison, but they will show the most significant footage over

<p>An interesting point brought up on FARK:</p><p>Mayor Nagin and the governors are in deep shiat. Emergency response plans and disaster relief are planned at the local and county (sometimes state) level. This is where FEMA and other federal agencies start off, basing their response and help on the existing state and local plans. The feds do not plan evacuations (except on multiple state levels) and do not release aid until asked for by the state governors. Bush has done all he can and has done more than was required by declaring the area a disaster BEFORE the hurricane hit. Other than that, it isn't up to him to do anything since it is in FEMA's and the other state agency's hands. All the lack of planning and early lack of response for help can be put SQUARELY on the mayor and governor.</p><p> </p><p>Just sayin'.</p>

<p>Goddamit, I almost starting crying during that
video. The exasperation of Smith and Geraldo and the realities of the
situation contrasted with Hannity's desparate resilience in covering
Republican ass. It's telling. Most of the people flipping out are the
people on the ground. The reality is the reality and it's hitting these
people square in the face and it's stripping ideology and partisan
connections right off. I don't understand why anybody is trying to
cover ass for anybody. As far party lines go, there's plenty of blame
to go around on both sides. The evacuation pre-hurricane was a failure
that lies straight upon the mayor and local government, Democratic. The
Democratic governor has looked like a fucking deer in the headlights
all week. The Democratic senator has been eating up airtime sucking
everyone's dick because they are doing such a great job. I have more
respect for David Vitter, Republican Senator, who hasn't been hogging
the airways for face time and who I've heard call the federal response
horrible. We've done plenty of FEMA and Bush bashing already.</p><p>All
we can do is donate money and light a fire under these people's asses
for now. I could never with good conscience vote for any of these
people again if I had to. This is an absolute travesty.<br />

destroyed. The entire town is submerged. Helicopters can only do so
much, which is very little. No other hurricane compares to this one,
it's level of damage is unprecedented. The fact that it took a few days
to get the mind numbing logistics involved here together doesn't
surprise me at all. <p> </p><p>When in US history (SF earthquake?) has
anything happened like this? An entire city has been shut down, and its
residents dispersed. This is the "Doomsday scenario" playing out. And
most of us shrug that stuff off as being highly unlikely. I'd expect a
more prompt response if this was a more regular event like what happens
to Fla every other year. Then a delay would be unacceptable. But in a
unique situation such as this? All bets are off. Plus throw in the fact
a war is going on, and troops that might otherwise be available aren't.

think the problem people have with the response from Bush and company
is two-fold. For one, it seems like they didn't take it seriously even
after it became obvious to everyone else that NO was in big trouble.
The President's reaction just seemed inappropriate, and the rest of the
major players stayed on vacation. This was a major catastrophe - it
should be a all-hands-on-deck type of situation.<br />
</p><p>The second problem is that this event has demonstrated how
unprepared we STILL are for a major attack. Imagine if a terrorist had
blown up a levee - it would have been much worse. For a President who
has built his presidency around protecting this country from terrorism,
the response was pitiful. Bush still seems woefully over his head when
it comes to this stuff, and his lack of awareness seems to be extending

about the thousands of people fighting for their life in the convention
center.<br />

I agree - I just hope that this really is a wake up call. There are refugees in America, and people are still quibbling about inconveniences in their lives? 600K jobs lost in one week? Patients and doctors have been trapped in hospitals with flooded morgues - children without food, formula or diapers - people forced to walk in water in sweltering sun, their skin turning wrinkled and cracked - people forced into a shelter that was bad as any war zone - a major American city destroyed, crippling the supply of oil. I hate the phrase "wrap my head/brain around" because it gets tossed around too much, but this is pretty close. ~ I know that DC is going to house some of those displaced. Since I'm not at a situation now that I could give money, I'm going to see if there is something I can do with that. If anyone has any links to stuff like that, please pass it along.

The young guy who saw the keys for the school buses in NO and found one of the buses that worked. He then proceeded to pick up stranded people throughout and on his way out of the city while listening to the radio for ideas of where to go. Next the school bus packed with about 80 people pooled money for gas and drove to the Astrodome once they heard they were opening their doors. When they arrived they were initially turned away and some said the driver, young man was almost arrested for stealing a fucking car! What a fucking joke huh? I guess Hannity was right about this scumbag looter! I guess he should have stayed down there and suffered like the rest. How dare he help others while all forms of our government sat reading "My Pet Goat". I bet this kid would have done a better job then Bush. <p>While humans beings were dying on the street, guns being shot at
transports, food sitting in cargo bays because the President had to
make a mock showing of him viewing the damage, most of us in America
remain glued to tv sets, or surfing the web, getting as much data about
the situation from real point of views. </p>
<p>The blog is peaking
still, as the US gets the first hand accounts of people in America
struggling with the ineptitude of the government.</p>
<p>The neo-cons
have no answer for this. They blame the black people and the poor for
being too dumb to escape, and being too black to comprehend peaceful
co-existance. They call them in New Orleans “animals”.</p>
<p>What is
wrong with our country? Why do senators and former presidents feel the
need to pat each other on the back, and take verbal handjobs from the
female senator of Lousiana, Mary Landrieu? Why do why need media people
to lash back at them and say “HEY. SHUT THE FUCK UP AND DO SOMETHING,
YOU FUCKING CUNT!”</p>
<p>That’s right. You heard it hear first. Mary Landrieu is a fucking cunt.</p>
<p>I don’t use the cunt word often, since cunt is a really, really horrible word. </p>
<p>Cunt.</p>
<p>Just saying it, go ahead, say it out loud. </p>
<p>Cunt.</p>
<p>Doesn’t it feel so wrong?</p>
<p>Imagine,
now, the disgust, and feeling of anger that must be rushing through the
blood in order to make such a word vocal, and load.</p>
<p>CUNT!</p>
<p>We are divided in this country, between country and cuntry. </p>
<p>The country is made up of hard working real Americans, who known what’s best for themselves and for others.</p>
<p>The
cuntry is the established gentry of our federal , state, and city
governments, who regulat our lives so much that we cannot handle the
beauracracy it takes to get shit done.</p>
<p>FEMA seems to think
that, just because it was able to show up just at the same moment that
REAL countrymen were pulling up steel trusses and dousing fires on
9/11, that they somehow know how to deal with tragic emergency.</p>
<p>They can’t, and they dont. FEMA is a bunch of cunts.</p>
<p>Georgre
Bush is more focused on his vacation time and figuring out Iraq that
he, THE EXECUTIVE BRNACH OF GOVERNMENT, couyldn’t get this shit
together on time, on time being 5 fucking days ago. </p>
<p>We can
get fucking oil pipelines back up and running amidst gunfire and
sabotage within days, yet we can’t figure out how to get emergency oil
construction going on in the Gulf?</p>
<p>George Bush is a fucking cunt. </p>
<p>You sucked at being the owner of the Rangers, and now you suck at being the owner of all our oil. </p>
<p>Your
fucking Vice President is head of the biggest oil construction company
in the fucking US! You couldn’t have him roll some heads at 5am, YOU
FUCKING CUNT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!</p>
<p>Senator Hilary Clinton, cunt. Investigations into price gouging does not stop the fact that we don’t have the oil.</p>
<p>Senator Chuck Schumer, cunt. No one cares right now that New York got attacked on 9/11, so stop bringing it up.</p>
<p>Compared
to the scale of failure that is now The Battle for New Orleans, where a
thriving city a week ago was turned into Basra, the failures of 9/11
seem like a paper jam on the office copier.</p>
<p>That’s how bad it
is. I can see it live on camera. Buildings are burning that should not
be burning, a week after the storm hit. There is no housing in place.
The corporations don’t give a shit. No one seems to give a shit. </p>
<p>You
know, sometimes, there’s a reason people shot guns, why people become
mobs. It’s not because New Orleans is a statistically high crime ridden
city. It’s because people let it happen. When no one has the balls to
take responsibility, then no one is willing to recognize the truth, and
that’s why the

Unlike my friends on the left I dont think they're all powerful and can

what will be done to correct this from happening again? I'd guess Fema

<p>BC, it's not the Red Cross's job to lead and take charge. They do what is asked of them and do a very good job. They would have no authority and just how should they take care of the violence? Call in the Salvation Army? This is the government's job, FEMA's job, but it funding has been stripped and looted under the Homeland Security inclusion. Their head is a fucking wank who mismanaged his last job so bad he was let go! Let's pat him on the back once more for a job well fucked up, and Bush for yet another great appointment. It was under Bush where we were supposed to have made gains in these areas. Yet in 1972, Agnes ripped through areas all across this nation and we responded much better. I know, my father helped with FEMA at the time as a civilian. This is the result of privatizing everything. Some things need to be under the reins of the government, with fucking funding. The neo-cons cut funding to all the things we need, or that help the poor/middle class, while lowering taxes for the rich. I could go deeper, but you get where I'm coming from. Hell, PA got hit with tons of floods back under Clinton and he ended up there during the flooding and as it happened. The SS and he made my aunt's house (or what was left of it) his base and he DID actually help filling sandbags and stayed right in the bad areas for days. <p>Curtiod you were asking about what you can do for people from NO who are coming to the DC armory. I contacted NBC4 and they said that there is a drop off at 1st district Headquarters on 415 4th SW. When I called the city there was a message saying that they are only excepting cash at this time. </p><p>It is hard when you don't have the extra cash right now and you want to do something. I know that these people could use clothes, shoes, (shower shoes), toiletries, something that then can say is theirs.</p><p>I still think the government should open some of the old military bases and start creating new communities. Give them a place to live see if we can find jobs for these people so the can get their lives back on track. </p><p>We need to stop the blame game and help these people. There will be plenty of time for blame and and constructive critism about how to avoid these tragedies in the future. If this was a terrorist attack we would be fucked. We had warning and we screwed the pooch on this one on every level. The only people who did not screw up were the people who were able to evacuate. </p><p>The whole country needs to take this as a warning that we all need to prepare for disasters where ever we live. Have food and water in your home. Have a plan for you and your family to evacuate your home, town, state. Most of us live in target areas NY and DC. It comes down to common sense and planning.</p>

<p>Peter Rosenberg did a very informative interview with a guy from the
New Orleans government tonight. I can't remember his name or position,
as I was busy driving, but I'll try to find out. He had a lot to say
about how government works down there. They have huge problems with the
funding system for schools, hospitals, and police. One thing that
struck me was that they only had 75k police for a city of that size
(pre-Katrina). </p><p>The same guy will be on his show again this upcoming Tuesday, as he is stranded in the DC area for now. </p>

<p>
New Orleans will have to be abandoned for at least nine months, and many of
its people will remain homeless for up to two years, the US government
believes.
</p>
<p>
The bleak assessment will deepen the biggest crisis faced by President
George Bush, who last week called the devastation of Hurricane Katrina a "
temporary disruption".
</p>
<p>
As the relief effort finally got under way yesterday for the tens of
thousands of people left without food, water, medicines or the rule of law
for five days, the federal official in charge of disaster recovery told
foreign diplomats that reconstruction cannot begin until next summer.
</p>
<p></p><p>It gets better</p><p>The death toll is likely to far exceed the numbers
killed in the 11 September attacks almost exactly four years ago. Sergeant
Nicholas Stahl of the Louisiana Office of Homeland Security and Emergency
Preparedness said that rescuers are focusing on finding an estimated 50,000
people still stranded by the flood waters and admitted "there is no
system to collect and store bodies".
</p>
<p>
Even when the bodies are recovered, experts say it will be far harder to
identify them than at the World Trade Center, because they are decomposing
rapidly in the heat.
</p>
<p> </p>
<p>So much for the Mardi gras plans next year. I wonder if this city
will recover for a decade or more. And the spirit of the town may be
lost forever. <br />

— For years, Washington had been warned that doom lurked just beyond
the levees. And for years, the White House and Congress had dickered
over how much money to put into shoring up century-old dikes and
carrying out newer flood control projects to protect the city of New
Orleans. </p><p>As recently as three months ago, the alarms were sounding — and being brushed aside</p><p> </p><p> </p>
<p> </p><p>In their defense,
there are any number of doomsday scenarios for risks all over the
country (most of which never happen). And alot of competition for those
Federal $. Throw in the fact its a Republican administration, and N.O.
is not exactly Pat Robertson's backyard. Something like this can (and
does) happen to most administrations, because in reality you cant do
everything for everyone. </p><p>Also, lets not let the New Orleans
Mayor and Governor off the hook here. When FEMA comes in, they try to
defer to and support the local officials, who were all apparently out
to lunch.
<a target="blank" href="http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/050901/480/flpc21109012015">Instead
of screaming at Bush, the Mayor could have deployed these to evacuate
the poor before the Katrina hit</a> But he didn't. But then again,
New Orleans has a history of corrupt and incompetant officials<br />
</p><p>As far as spending 100 billion on damages, I bet the Feds dont
spend anywhere near that. As I said earlier thats $200,000 per
resident, only a quarter of which is covered by insurance. And much of
the poor lived in Government housing (built in the hurricane prone low
lying areas) It'll be way cheaper to simply find them housing
elsewhere. And from the news reports I've seen, many have no plans on
coming back anyway. Throw in the fact that insurance companies will
double their premiums after an event like this, it may not be
affordable anymore for many. <br />
</p><p>New Orleans had a spirit thats unique in America, and in alot
of ways did not resemble the rest of the US. And thats what alot of
people loved about it. I hope they dont lose that. </p>

<p> </p><p>That doesn't contradict anything I've said. Thats a very broad,
sweeping statement. I saw Michael Chertoff say in an interview that
they defer to local authorities in situations like this. They dont walk
in and act like they're experts and the people who live there aren't.
That would be stupid, and lead to even worse outcomes. Of course, the
Feds have ultimate "jurisdiction" in situations like this, but dont
confuse that with working closely with the folks closest to the
situation, which is the smart thing to do. </p><p> </p><p>About
New Orleans official incompetance and corruption,
<a href="http://www.nydailynews.com/front/story/343324p-292991c.html" target="blank">this
article</a> sums it up perfectly. </p><p> </p><font face="Verdana" style="font-size: 9px;">quote:</font><span class="bodytext"><p>
And Louisiana is the only one of the 50 states where the state
legislature doesn't allocate money to pay for the legal defense of
indigent defendants. The Associated Press reported this year that it's
not unusual for poor people charged with crimes to stay in jail for
nine months before getting a lawyer appointed.</p><p>
These government failures are not merely a matter of incompetence.
Louisiana and New Orleans have a long, well-known reputation for
corruption: as former congressman Billy Tauzin once put it, "half of
Louisiana is under water and the other half is under indictment."</p><p>
That's putting it mildly. Adjusted for population size, the state ranks
third in the number of elected officials convicted of crimes
(Mississippi is No. 1). Recent scandals include the conviction of 14
state judges and an FBI raid on the business and personal files of a
Louisiana congressman. </p><p>
In 1991, a notoriously corrupt Democrat named Edwin Edwards ran for
governor against Republican David Duke, a former head of the Ku Klux
Klan. Edwards, whose winning campaign included bumper stickers saying
"Elect the Crook," is currently serving a 10-year prison sentence for
taking bribes from casino owners. Duke recently completed his own
prison term for tax fraud.</p><p>
The rot included the New Orleans Police Department, which in the 1990s
had the dubious distinction of being the nation's most corrupt police
force and the least effective: the city had the highest murder rate in
America. More than 50 officers were eventually convicted of crimes
including murder, rape and robbery; two are currently on Death Row</p></span> <p> </p><p>And this is why it matters in this instance. <br />

<p>
The decision to subject an entire population to poverty, ignorance,
injustice and government corruption as a way of life has its ugly
moments, as the world is now seeing. New Orleans officials issued an
almost cynical evacuation order in a city where they know full well
that thousands have no car, no money for airfare or an interstate bus,
no credit cards for hotels, and therefore no way to leave town before
the deadly storm and flood arrived.</p>
<p>
The authorities provided no transportation out of the danger zone,
apparently figuring the neglected thousands would somehow weather the
storm in their uninsured, low-lying shacks and public housing projects.</p>
<p> </p> <p> </p>
<p> </p><p>I highly recommend reading the entire article. They have always treated the poor like shit in that town. </p><p><img border="0" src="http://home.comcast.net/%7Ebob80/RFnetBulldogcakes3.jpg" /></p><p><a href="http://bulldogcakes.tripod.com/index.html" target="blank">My site Bully Baby</a></p>

I read in the Daily News that Haliburton will get the contract for the cleanup/rebuilding process, this will add more to the controversy
O and A... PARTY ROCK!!!!!
<p><font size="0" face="verdana" color="black">I saw Michael Chertoff say in an interview that they defer to local authorities in situations like this.</font></p><p>Do
you honestly believe anything that comes out of his mouth or anyone
else's mouth in this administration? This is an obvious CYA plan, that
they have executed many times before for whenever they fuck up, whether
it be post-Iraq War planning or WMDs. They are lying and saying things
that contradict excuses that other officials are saying. They are
throwing anything and everything at the wall to see if it
sticks.</p><p><a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/09/03/AR2005090301680_pf.html" target="_blank">Take this article for example.</a></p><p>Look
at that correction at the top. A senior Bush administration official
tried to say that Blanco still had not declared a state of emergency.
She did, two days before the the hurricane hit, and Bush did the same
the next day. Doesn't this kind of shit seem familiar?</p><p>And there
are NO excuses for Chertoff and others just getting their facts wrong
and not even being aware of things that are going on and being reported
on. This kind of shit doesn't happen if they are on the ball. They
aren't, they are trying to push all the blame onto local government and
it is sick and if there waas any fucking justice in this world the
people responsible for all this CYA and the countless other times these
people have tried to duck blame they would be struck dead in their beds
tonight. It's disgusting AND I'M FUCKING SICK OF IT!!!!!!!!!!!! We have
got to the point where they have cost innocent American lives and they
are acting no different. Does anyone here have any confidence that
anyone will lose their job over this? Honestly?</p><p>There is no excuse for anyone's fuck ups. The local government is just as guilty as the federal.<br />

LOOK WE CARE ABOUT BLACK PEOPLE.</p><p>And what the hell is Rice doing out there anyway shes the Sec of State, granted her trip to NYC was ill timed but she should be point for any international responce not in the diaster zone any security for her would take away rescue resources</p><p>buy hey what do I know im Drunk!!</p>

Thanks Miss for linking the FEMA story I was talking about. That vid was tough, I'm in the same place as Hbox with this whole thing. I've been there since late Tuesday when I started wondering where the fuck we were? Cafferty on CNN, not even close to a liberal, summed it up nicely to Wolf a few days back, "Embarrassing".

This article from The Times-Picayune New Orleans newspaper calls out the fedral government for one of their biggest excuses- that because there was the flooding on top of the hurricane, they couldn't get into the city. Total bullshit.
