Anybody hitting any shows? Hell, there are what looks to be hundreds of bands, some great, some bad, many I don't know much about, but I'd love to take in a few of the shows at least. Has anyone ever gone to one of these events? I've been a fan of the rag in the past, but it has strayed a little over the last few year.

Check out the link: http://www.cmj.com/marathon/

Here are just a few of the bands performing. Wow, the only bands I've even heard of on that list are Nashville Pussy and Drum & Tuba...and I wouldn't go out of my way to hear either of them.

The CMJ annual show is always a good one. Tons of great underground and indie rock bands, and always plenty that end up becoming big within a few years.

In the mid 80s the College Music Journal was a big affair; and I was there as visitor, panelist, all that crap when you run a university station.

It's very cool for people who wish to be exposed to new music; and this is not most people, no matter what they might say. The best year was the year the CMJ convention was held halloween weekend so we got to watch all these peeps from 'not NY' watch in awe, and a bit of fear, what happens to lower manhattan on Halloween, and this one landed on a weekend. Oh the debauchery; oh the awesome bands I saw but had utterly no idea who they were. You took places like The Limelight for granted, and to see the reaction of someone from Sheboygin when they walked into that place, you realized this is where it happens for music, and it still is that way. If you're not going to the city to play, there's no hope. None. LA, NY, Nashville, these must be played, or languish in obscurity.

Sadly, CMJ the magazine is not what it used to be; it's a bit of an anachronism; I doubt people spend days reeling off the station playlist to the CMJ people to print in back. Oh, the days of college radio...

[Looking over at reels of me on-air from 1985... someday...]

Actually, CMJ is still one of the better music review magazines out there in that they have the simple feature at the start of each review where they say, "if you like THIS list of 4, 5 bands, you'll probably like this band." It's a remarkably simple difference from other music magazines, but it's infinitely more useful for finding new bands that I'm probably gonna like. Combine that with the free CD every month, I still put CMJ up near the top of the heap. Their biggest problem is their publishing capabilities...for a magazine that's been around as long as they have, they still publish like they're just a local 'zine. It seems they've finally gotten back on a regular schedule this year (though at the sacrifice of becoming a shorter magazine with less features), but between the end of 2001 and most of 2004, they were a mess. Now it seems the bulk of the magazine is new band profiles and album reviews, which always were the most useful feautres, but it makes for pretty dry reading.

But yes, the playlists are all still listed towards the back, Mike. They have around a dozen charts per issue based around college or "indie" radio...or what's left of it these days.

Oh well...still miles better than stuff like Spin or Rolling Stone.

Too drunk to dream... << Champagne for my real friends, and real pain for my sham friends. >> "You can tell some lies about the good times we've had, but I've kissed your mother twice...and now I'm working on your dad..."

But yes, the playlists are all still listed towards the back, Mike. They have around a dozen charts per issue based around college or "indie" radio...or what's left of it these days.

=

Wow cool, I only said that as I went down memory lane in my head when I was the big muckity-muck at WMCX at Monmouth college [now U.]; I was PD, then GM when they went from 13 [yes, 13. Thirteen. 13.21 actually] watts too 1,000 watts. I was real lucky, it was all timing of the FCC with the power increase, but I got to be GM for a year at a 1,000 watt college station, so that was cool. This was before anyone had email, so youd call up CMJ, usually it was the MD but I'd call it in sometimes, and the call would take so long coz you had to reel off this list, and they wanted to know Everything you were playing, and the other person wrote it down.

Do they still release CDs? CMJ put out a 'Certain Damage' series of CDs, and I see them at flea markets; they are often some great compilations of the new music of the time.

Nah, all their CD money goes to putting out the CD that comes free with each monthly issue, which is pretty cool in and of itself. There's always at least 15 different artists, so you get a really decent sampling of what's out there under the radar.

But you're right, their old comps kicked ass. I've sought out a few from the 80's on used CD or auction sites and they were well worth the hunt.

The chart listings are much more general now...usually just a sampling of 2, 3 specific stations at the most, and then the rest is broken down by region of the country...

Mojo's right on about CMJ. I actually was a subscriber for about ten years but haven't renewed this last year with my move. I'll get it going again soon and will take in a few of these shows. If CMJ would stay on schedule, it would help it's subscription rates. It seems like I never got the agreed upon amount of issues and I can't tell you have many time they combine months bc of one problem or another. Also, the last few years they seemed to throw mainstream bands I already know and like or couldn't give a fuck about. This did piss me off, as I'd rather be exposed to new bands that I may like or may not. But at least I was getting what I paid for.

They've actually been timely with the magazine every month this year, so here's hoping that it'll stay that way. I wonder if they'll ever expand the content again...it seems most of the freelance articles and editorials are what's missing now.

The thing that pissed me off the most about the big era of delays for two years is they kept basically blaming it on 9/11. Yes, of course, the last few months of 2001 were completely fucked up since their offices are mere blocks from Ground Zero, but they kept missing issues and screwing up the schedule well into 2004, almost two years after 9/11. There's still 4 issue's worth of CD's I keep hounding them to get...
