View Full Version : I need to save money

My gas/electric are set since I joined a monthly program where I pay the same for each month until I have to pay up at the end of the year (This year was brutal since I owed over $300!).

I have a car and have the lowest insurance around (NJ Manufacturers); about $975 a year. My car is about 5 years old. Should I drop collision? I've never (knock on wood) had a accident.

My phone I rarely use. It's about $34.00 a month. I'm going to drop the call waiting, which is onlt $5 a month.

I have a cell. Can I transfer my number to a pay-as-you-go plan? I rarely use my phone. I only need it for driviing.

I will not give up my cable modem. That's a set thing. It's my "hobby" and my one frill. That is how I look at that.

I cut off HBO.

I cut my spending a lot by not ordering out. Or going out. I'll go to dinner ever now and then.

I renegotiated my mortgage.

Any other ideas?

My wife and I are in much the same boat as we are trying to drastically cut expenses and save as much as we can. the one thing that has made the most difference was when we ripped up the debit/atm card. Our bills come out of the main account only and any extra or "found" money, if any, goes into a new account with a new atm card. all of a sudden, it's like we gave ourselves a raise, knowing that our misc spending, including groceries and some gas, comes out of an account with a much smaller balance, and we are much more careful. Good luck to you, Alice, and I look forward to everyone else's helpful hints!

Ahhh...the brutal life of a contractor. Sounds like you've done everything right - I wouldn't drop the collision, tho. Back in 1992 I was in a horrible accident at a time when I let my insurance dropped - I walked out of the car fine, but the ramifications of that I was feeling years and year later. You just never know. Currently I got rid of long distance, I've cut my cable back to the essential $15.00 a month (although, even though they actually never turned the switch, so I still have more) and for awhile there I had my car paid off. I had to go into a little bit of debt to upgrade a bunch of stuff, and got a new used car, and that little bit more has really hurt a lot more than I imagined. If I don't get an infusion of something very, very soon, it's going to be the bleakest Christmases around the Curtoid Family tree.

I really suck at cooking so it's pasta most every night, with a few hot dogs thrown in there. I buy soup and frozen food when they are on sale.

I actually got rid of cable altogether, no phone, realized I was buying a few DVDs a month and switched to netflix (the $14.99/month plan) and started eating a lot more eggs and a lot less meat. By far the cheapest source of protein around...
Also just cutting all the crap snack food, soda and starbucks out of my diet helped a lot, not just $$ wise but healthwise. I mean sure, it's what like $3 a day to stop in and grab a tea at Starbucks, but all that adds up.

on both sides of my family, w/ 8 kids on each side, my grandparents were still able to provide for their families and have a nice nest egg. shit my grandpa would have bouf=ght his last linciln straight up cash if my uncles didn;t step in to tell him to finanace.

sure what you have listed fuzzybutt might be cosidered "luxeries," but not in the sense of summer homes or boats. what the fuck has happened???

i recently read an article in playboy w/ thomas friedman calling for "portable" health cae, 401ks, etc... wee are not like our parents/ gp who could/ would work the same job from 18 to retirement. i know very few who are able to save realistically and their only assets are homes. very volitile.

Is there anything you can do to earn more? The stuff you're cutting out
seems pretty basic, and while you could live without it, its stuff most
people have without $ problems. Are you working?

BTW I would KILL for $975 car insurance. And I'm 36.

I switch my phone to Vonage. I only pay around 26 a month w no long distance charges. If you rarely use the phone they have a 14.99 monthly plan.

The nice thing is I did not have to change my number. Like the cell phone I was able to switch my number to them at no cost.

Also if I travel and there is a High speed line I plug my modem in and I am good to go. Saves alot on phoning from hotels.
