View Full Version : The Annual FarAway Report - Milestone Edition

FarAway
09-07-2005, 01:01 PM

Seeing as this is a major change for R&F, I figured it was important to do a milestone edition of my FarAway Annual Report!

Well 2005 started off amazing. I truly disliked the entire 2004 year. So this year was a relief.

In 2005 they dumped the old opening music, and just tore into the year. I wasn't bored for a moment.

I was happy to hear Bits (I liked his game shows!) and Keisha, who almost took the place of a certain orange one.

The only thing that was missing was 5 letter man Billy Staples. I just
loved when he'd walk in and R&F would verbally beat the poop out of
him. And Billy would always happily come back for more.

Fez seemed to finally come back to life. While on the meds he would
just be listening to the show like the rest of us. Ron was pretty much
doing a one man show for long periods.

The major downers for me:

"Bad Guests":

Honestly, with CKY, Jackass, Viva La Bam, and Wild Boyz out there, I'm
really not very interested in setting up people trying to get some
exposure and doing silly characters on them. In my opinion, it's done
better elsewhere. A low-res version on radio is not a thrill anymore.

Crazy Jen:

I hate to bash on her, because I can't really blame her for trying. But
I really think she's had WAY too much air time for FAR too long.

This may be exposing the shows lack of a quality producer. (not their
fault) Someone that can just keep her frequency on the show low. But
it's confusing because R&F usually have no problem keeping things
short when they want to. But with Bobo, Jen, AKA Blowhard, and Tender,
their open source (door) policy was backfiring.

The Giant Professor:

Giant Brian was actually a huge positive to me. I thought he was an
excellent 3rd mic guy, and R&F just couldn't seem to knock him
down. But when he left I was shocked that he burned a lot of bridges,
seemed to treat people without influence like garbage, and in general
seemed quite disrespectful right after he knew he would be leaving. It
was a sad end to someone I was having high hopes for.

Spoilers! WTF!:

WTF is up with the R&F show and spoilers. I learned long ago to
turn them off the moment they start talking about a movie. They always
spoil movies and it's VERY frustrating. They will go to a midnight,
opening-hour showing of a movie and start spoiling the very next
weekday. How many people do they think have had a chance to see the
movie before they start giving stuff out? I really hope they will cut
this because a lot of people might get pissed about this on a national
scale. I know I got so pissed about it that I turn them off when I
really don't want to. If they can't learn to be a little more kind to
people that simply can't rush out to a movie the hour, day, or weekend
it opens, then they should just keep the opinions as general as
possible and/or caution about spoilers.

Warning!:

Some items I hope R&F will think about before hitting XM

The Open Door:

They may want to put some limits on the open door. Nothing too hard.
Just something like "only 3 IN-STUDIO visits a month per person" for
example. Phones of course are no problem because they can kick someone
off the phone or just not pick them up easily.

Keep the walk-ins time limited. We can overdose on just about everyone
(except Perry, probably because he knows not to overstay his welcome.
What a fake pro! I predict a great fake career for him!)

You can't help but notice what kinds of people are taking advantage of
the open door. How many are musicians? How many just want to be famous
for no apparent reason other then they woke up in the morning? (Jen

For someone who listened so much, you obviously only heard (or didn't hear) what you wanted. You are so obsessed with Jen you can't make it to the next paragraph without attacking her again, but most people who actually listened to the show in 2005 know that she was on a fraction of the time she was on in 2004, by her own design, I suspect. Maybe even count on one hand the number of times she was in studio - including a visit with her mother which, imo, was brilliant radio. Even before the "30 days in the hole," there was about a good month there where she wasn't even heard from.

FarAway,for your concise opinions,some consolation.Giant Brian said
he'd be back with R&F on Oct 25 I believe,from a drunken Las Vegas
night call-in to Perrynoid's show ,Cosmic Circus. He may have been
joking, however. But I actually believed him.I believe the GIANT is sick
of DeBella and happy to be going back where he shined on R&F.That
would make Black Earl a temp producer if so,I guess.I'm not afraid to
conjecture.I don't agree with all your opinions,FarAway, but they are
fodder for others to post on and we all have our tastes and agendas. In
fact you bring up some good old memories.Thanks,Jerry.
It's like with anything that you're not use to - after the first couple of times on the AFRO shows you really didn't even notice it when they did it. They just now have the freedom to talk like normal people do. As I said in the "posse" thread, some of my contract work is with the church, and I've been SO careful of what I say, etc. when I'm on site and meeting with them (not that I'm going to pull a Matty and refer to someone as a "Cunt," but you always have to be careful when you get comfortable around certain people). Anyway, in the last few weeks I've heard a couple muffled "Shits!" and "Damn" from some of the folks there, including one of the revs.

Your 1st mistake is even expecting better behavior from religious people. They're just people. Many of them are hypocites, but most of them are just imprefect like the rest of us.

I mean what's better? Striving to be this perfect human being God wants us to be and failing but at least trying, or just admitting you can't be that person and dealing with who you are everyday? I won't make a judgement on that one. I know where I stand.

Well I might as well tack a quick report on the first XM broadcast of R&F.

It was a typical November 2004 show

Jen decided to call in on the first day and start pushing for her to be on doing something every week.

How about giving the show a little air Jen?

I
really have no idea why they give her so much time, but I'm a longtime
R&F listener, pulling hard for their success, and it was all
I could do to not turn off the show. I can't imagine what all the
O&A listeners were doing while trying to give the show a chance.
You think they hung in there for all that screaming mess? The whole
thing?

Earl did not step in as I had hoped. How
about a "Jen, try to keep it to 5 minutes" before she goes on the air?
Or "losing" the call when the show is dragging like an anvil.

Earls pep talk before the show had me longing for
Keisha. If I can't have the 5 letter man, at least give me Keisha. Give
me Bits! Something other than news, sports, and what celeb is getting
fatter.

What band got back together?

I
was also seriously shocked that they seemed to have absolutely NOTHING
special going on for the first show. Not even Ron's best friend Mr.
Baldwin

The fact that they couldn't get something special going after all their years in the biz was a surprise.

It was back to sports, jen, stupid entertainment news, etc.

Not exactly a rare item in the talk radio world.

I
give them HUGE kudos though for taking it easy on the "bad" words. Of
course Jen had to go overboard. But R&F kept the words low and I
really liked that.

I really find comedy takes a dive when the bad words fly.

I
wish the show would take some kind of step forward. Shake the whole
thing up. And again, no more of the old Fez act. Something new to the
table please.

.
