IF that's all true, it doesn't take a rocket
scientist to figure out what route they;re going down with Venom as
opposed to the comics. Interesting, to me anyway.

And even if
that's all true, I'd bet this movie is going to be centered on Church's
character, with the other's being set up for further
sequels.

As i recall the Hobgoblin was actually Jason Phillip Macendale. Although one of the major story lines was that Flash Thompson was the Hobgoblin.

Plus the hobgoblin does not wear a mask anymore, he was permenantly altered during the whole N'astrith/Goblin Queen/Madelyne Prior/X-Men/Mr. Sinister thing. I think the story arc was like inferno or something along those lines. He also got stronger after the transformation to rival spider man.

God im a nerd

I hate to say it... I've never been a fan of Tobey as Peter. Gyllenhaal or Grace would have been a lot better, especially given Grace's comedy background.
It's an interesting take on the black suit. It just looks like a black version of the regular suit. In the comics, there was a distinct difference. It was just pure black, with the white accents for the eyes, logo, and hands.
Perhaps, again, it's Hollywood logic, that the suit needs some definition to look better on film.
Another thing about the black suit - it had "topside" webshooters... with the biological webshooters, that's not going to happen.
TheMojoPin
02-24-2006, 05:44 AM

The topside thing never made any sense, since he needs to grab the webs with his hand to swing on them.

And yeah, I wish it was the black suit from the comic book. Very cool design, and like it's been said, the only costume revamp I liked and actually enjoyed more than the original version.

I like how Sony had to post on the site that it's a black suit after all the fansites were like, "is that a B&W pic or a black suit?"
I have a feeling that poster is going back to the drawing board to "pop" the colors a little more before the poster is put into the theatres for the drooling masses.

During the battle, Spidey exhibited some new powers, such as stingers from his arm. He also killed Morlun which bathed Spidey in energies that led to his resurrection. He now has several new powers.
There's a Q&A on AICN right now that may be fake but sounds like it could be very real. Sounds like it's a mix between the comic and a new interpretation (the symbiote comes in contact with Sandman - I assume giving it that shape shifting ability) and Venom is really only in one fight, a big final battle vs Sandman vs Spidey, with Green Goblin assisting Spidey.

And from first glance it looked like a variation on Green Goblin to me in the poster's eye.

It's just a building.

I also saw that Q&A that Jon was talking about, although it's been taken down. I'll spoiler this for my impressions of it:

I got the impression reading it that Venom is gonna be almost a throwaway character. Sandman sounds like he'll get much more screentime, and the guy in the Q&A said Venom ain't coming back, although he said a slight cliffhanger will be left. Basically, Venom is done but the symbiote will still be around. Doesn't take much to ascertain where that might be going. Also, as far as cameos, Bruce Campbell will be a charcter called Quentin Beck. Look it up.

I can't remember how the symbiote comes to earth, but I do remember that it Peter first contacts it by stepping on it, bringing it back to his apartment. The symbiote then infects the costume, which is why the costume looks normal except black. It takes over Peter when he puts it on, and he gets rid of it using a church bell, where it falls down and immediately comes into contact with Brock. The guy then says the Venom is pretty much a a behind the scenes character until the end. The final fight has Spiderman and Green Goblin 2 against Sandman and Venom. Neither Gwen Stacy nor Mary Jane die. This is all assuming that the Q&A was accurate.

So that's that, and I don't really know how I feel.

Wait, let me get this straight. Blonde Kirsten Dunst has to dye her hair red to play Mary Jane, and red head Bryce Dallas Howard has to dye her hair blonde to play Gwen Stacy? I'm reminded of that old Brian Regan bit where two trucks carrying logs cross each other going opposite ways on a highway. I can't stand the fact that I have to wait nearly a year to see this film. I fully expect it to surpass 1 & 2, both of which I already loved, and unlike the 3rd installment of XMen.

Goddamn, I hate Venom so very much. Raimi has my hopes up because of his background in horror films, and because the hospital scene with Doc Ock was so fucking creepy...if he "does" Venom like that, I'll be all for it. And I love the casting of Topher Grace as Eddie Brock. I'd much rather see Venom be a true doppelganger of Peter AND Spider-Man...it just drives home why he'd hate and be jealous of the guy so much. Making him a randomly 'roided-out newspaper photographer makes zero sense, and serves no purpose. Venom doesn't have to be huge...his real danger should be in what he knows.

From how the footage at Comic-Con was described, and the looks of the poster it sounds like Brock goes through an American Werewolf in London style transformation changing into Venom.

In the comics, Venom's "eyes" and "teeth" were a part of the symbiote, not of brock. From the looks of the poster, it's a very different interpretation.

Lookin forward to this. I saw them shooting it down in lower manhattan.
I saw this tonight. I'll just say this for now: the last 20 minutes of this film are BAD. So bad. It's on the level of a theme park ride. Like Escape From Dinosaur Island at Great Adventure or something like that. The effects are bad, the acting is atrocious, the editing is amateur and what happens is monumentally stupid.
But I did actually enjoy this film. For all its flaws, and there are a ton, I still liked it. In fact I liked it more than I think I should have.

im also going sunday while most of the religious folk are in church
The short version of my review: It was OK. I enjoyed despite it being a deeply flawed film. It's probably my favorite of the series. I didn't like 2 and 1 didn't age well at all IMO. I'll put my more detailed thoughts under spoilers:
They completely wasted Venom. They completely wasted the black suit. And they pretty much wasted the Sandman.
First the black suit. They didn't explore it at all. It was basically used as a way to make Parker let the whole Spiderman thing go to his head. It didn't make him stronger, it just made him an asshole. It seems pretty obvious to me that the only reason the black suit was used was to make Parker get really egotistical without it being totally his own fault. Disappointing.
Now Sandman. He could have carried his own film. This film should have been his own. They probably could have got by with him and Green Goblin 2 being a side plot. But there was so much going on that Sandman gets lost. And he's the villian who gets the most screen time. They barely touched on his back story, only just enough to make him sympathetic. Why is he still robbing banks? Why the hell does he want Spiderman dead at the end? And then why does he take a huge 180 just minutes later? He wasn't explored as much as he should have been. And its really diappointing because Thomas Haden Church was so good. It could have been great. But at least they can explore him again in the future since he didn't die.
But the most disappointing thing was Venom. He's on the movie for a bout a half hour. He wasn't explored at all. And then he's killed off. Which is horrible because what there was of him was so good. They nailed the look of Venom. It was absolutely the best comic to screen visual translation of any character ever. And Topher Grace was great. So great that you'll find yourself actually wishing that he was playing Spiderman in the face of Tobey Maguire's lazy performance. Which makes it so bad that they barely explored Brock or Venom. Brock was such a one dimensional narcisistic character. And Venom is just a plot device to create a final showdown. None of the dialogue between the symbiote and Brock. And they'll never be able to fix it because the symbiote and Brock are dead.
Now for what was actually in the film and not what should have been. The Spiderman franchise has always had really cheesy moment and this is no different. It has the corwd cheering on Spiderman, it has that over the top talk with Aunt May where peter decides he's gonne fix everything, etc. Sometimes it works. The Saturday Night Fever thing is great. The J. Jonah Jameson scenes are still the best scenes in the film as usual. But more often they are cringy. Like any scene involving a Spiderman and a crowd in awe/cheering him on. Or the awful dance scene, the worst thing in any of the films.
The effects ranged from great to awful. It was obvious that Sandman is just beyond current technology. Sometimes it passable but more often, like at the end, it's so bad as to take you out of the film. Venom was great, Spiderman was good. Green Goblin 2 was hit and miss.
As for the performances, Grace and Dunst look bored with the whole thing. Grace and Haden Church were great and so was James Franco, surprisingly. The Harry/Peter storyline was the best one in the film despite a bad, cringy scene at the end.
The most unbelievable thing are the way some of the characters act. At the beginning Brock is taking photos of Gwen Stacy hanging off a building. He's dating her but doesn't seem overly concerned. He doesn't seem concerned at all in fact. Perhaps that was done to illustrate how selfish he except he's doing this all in front of her father who he hasn't met and who doesn't seem all that concerned either. And then there's Sandman at the end. Venom offers him the chance to kill Spiderman. He goes along despite the movie trying to portray him as a good guy in an awful situation. And he almost succeeds. But then as soon as Venom dies he doesn't really care about killing Spiderman. In fact it seems he wants to make amends. It all comes down to the fact that they crammed so much into this movie that they couldn't give anything the attention it deserved.
And despite all that I enjoyed it. The action scenes were good. They could have made more of the Sandman Spiderman scenes but they could have made more of a lot. Thety made Bryce Dallas Howard look hot which is an accomplishment. Basically if you go in just looking for a good time and don't try to let these flaws bother you it's a decent way to spend 2 and a half hours. Just turn your brain off at the door.
